Ukraine war: 'Sky turned red' as missiles hit Lviv military base - BBC News
_123672950_ukraine_missile_strike_polish_border_map_640-nc.png

''This attack is significant because the centre, one of Ukraine's largest military facilities, is located just 25km (15 miles) from Poland, a Nato member.

The border with Poland is a vital route for refugees, but also for weapons being sent by countries in the military alliance - which have included anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles.

So far, Nato has rejected a Ukrainian request to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine, saying this would trigger a wider conflict with Russia.

It is also the first major attack in western Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion of the country, on 24 February. The region has become a hub for millions of people escaping the war in other areas of the country. Around 2.6 million have left Ukraine so far.''

Indian evacuee: The kindness of Ukrainians saved my life - BBC News

''One of Vishnu's friends managed to find a Ukrainian minibus driver willing to take them to the Romanian border 250km (155 miles) away.

The driver, whose normal job involved taking people on day trips out of Vinnytsia, was not yet ready to leave the country himself because his wife was ill. So he agreed to make the risky trip, for which the group paid him a total of 12,000 Ukrainian hryvnia (£300).

Vishnu says he owes this driver his life.

"I can't express - it's because of him, only, we got saved. I say to him thank you, from the bottom of my heart."

@JenniferJJacobs

US and China will hold 1st high-level, in-person talks since Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine, as Biden admin continues to try to enlist Beijing to exert influence on Putin.
@JakeSullivan46
to meet in Italy Monday with China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, per person familiar.

And China just released a statement on tomorrow's meeting between diplomat Yang Jiechi and US’s Jake Sullivan. Biden admin has been working to increase pressure on China to enforce sanctions on Russia’s economy imposed by US and allies. https://fmprc.gov.cn/web/wjdt_674879/wsrc_674883/202203/t20220313_10651374.shtml

The Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv Region tweeted photos Sunday purportedly showing a bloodied journalist, his U.S. passport, and his press badge enclosed in a U.S. peacekeeper holder.

Both documents bore identification photos and the name Brent Renaud.

The press badge was labeled New York Times and listed names of a senior and executive producers for Renaud and the address of the New York City office for The Gray Lady.

Former NYT contributor killed, other journalists wounded by Russian fire, Kyiv police say

Sad, but true.
Award-winning journalist Brent Renaud killed in Ukraine (nypost.com)

''An award-winning journalist who was a former New York Times contributor has been killed by Russian forces near Kyiv, the region’s head of police said Sunday.

Brent Renaud, 51, a video journalist, was fatally shot when Russian troops opened fire on a car near the Romanivsky Bridge in Irpin, police said.

“The occupants cynical [sic] kill even journalists of the international media who try to show the truth about the inaction of Russian troops in Ukraine,” Kyiv Chief of Police Andrey Nebitov wrote on Facebook.

“Of course, the profession of a journalist is a risk, but US citizen Brent Renaud paid his life for trying to highlight the aggressor’s ingenuity, cruelty and ruthlessness,” he continued.

Two other journalists were also injured in the attack and taken to the hospital, Nebitov said.''

This is from yesterday and although we've already heard about this referendum I don't remember seeing a date before. According to this article, it could be today.

Ukraine Says Russia Planning Sham Independence 'Referendum’ In Occupied Kherson (rferl.org)
[...]

Kherson, a port city near where the Dnieper River flows into the Black Sea, borders Crimea, the peninsula that Russia seized in 2014.

Russian control of Kherson through a proxy “independent” nation would be a step towards the Kremlin creating a land bridge between Russia and Crimea.

[...]

Serhiy Hlan, a deputy of the Kherson regional council, said earlier in the day that Russian occupying forces had contacted him and other deputies asking them to “cooperate” with the creation of Kherson National Republic (KhNR), he said in a Facebook post.

Hlan said that he “categorically refused” and called on other deputies to reject the Russian overtures.

[...]

A resident of Kherson speaking on condition of anonymity with RFE/RL amid concern over her safety, said Russia has brought in at least nine busloads of people from Russian-controlled territories in the east.

She said the vote could be held on March 13 to coincide with the anniversary of Soviet forces driving the Nazi’s out of Kherson in 1944.

[...]

“No one in Kherson wants it to be an independent republic. We are part of Ukraine, this [KhNR] is nonsense,” the resident told RFE/RL.

Kherson citizens are sending around messages warning each other not to vote or fall victim to a Russian provocation, she said.

[...]

Bus with Ukrainian refugees overturns in Italy, one dead

11:50 | In Italy, a bus carrying about 50 Ukrainian refugees has run off the road and overturned. A young woman did not survive the accident. Several people were injured.

The accident happened Sunday morning on the highway between Cesena and Rimini, on Italy's northeast coast. According to Italian media, the bus was on its way to Pescara and came directly from Ukraine. Footage released by emergency services shows the bus lying on its side in a ditch. The cause of the accident is unknown.

The problem with a declaration such as this is that it doesn't account for males who are needed to get their families to safety. And, what of the males who already left with families? Are they supposed to come back and fight?

"Ukrainian males aged 18-60 are banned from leaving the country, Zelensky says in new declaration
From CNN's Tamara Qiblawi and Caroll Alvardo

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered a general military mobilization.

In a declaration signed late Thursday, Zelensky said that "in order to ensure the defense of the state, maintaining combat and mobilization readiness of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations," a broad-based mobilization was ordered, including in the capital, Kyiv and all Ukraine's major cities."

Ukrainian males aged 18-60 are banned from leaving the country, Zelensky says in new declaration
According to this article, there is/was an exemption but this is the only time I've seen this mentioned.

Young father who escaped Ukraine raising money to help brother left behind to fight (fox26houston.com)
Men between the ages of 18 and 60 must stay and defend their country, but some are exempt, including fathers with three or more children.

Just so I am clear....
We have Russia invading Ukraine
Iran targeted missiles into Iraq
And China is doing some verbal bullying against those who support Taiwan.

Hmmm

I also didn't here this before...maybe this was just before the first streams of refugees went over the border. I don't know.

North Korea: United States believes intercontinental ballistic missiles launched by Pyongyang | World News | Sky News
''ANALYSIS BY TOM CHESHIRE, ASIA CORRESPONDENT

North Korean missile tests are usually described – fairly – as a provocation.
But the most important point is the "test" part.
Kim Jong Un doesn't just fire missiles to rile South Korea and the US.
He is committed to building a strong nuclear deterrent, has faced serious costs as a result, and so he needs to make sure it works.
North Korea appears to have been taking advantage of a diplomatic lull to ramp up its defences.
The war in Ukraine has probably only added to that determination.
Mr Kim sees a military superpower with imperial ambitions invading a smaller neighbour, one unable to defend itself with nuclear weapons, and imagines the US in exactly the same role.''

China warns of 'worst consequences' for any country that supports Taiwan militarily

So now X threatens “worst consequences”.

Will the world be held hostage?

Jmo

Do we want wealthy, educated Taiwan to fall to China?

In situations like this, I think we need to look at the cost of not only equipment, but people getting into Chinese hands. Without people, it is just small piece of land. The cost of losing their people and technology will be heavy.

Couldn't they just shut the F*** up, going back to their diplomatic playing the innocents. This is not helping.

From the quoted article, below, it looks like the PRC's remarks were made in response to the following statement by Australian Defense Minister about Taiwan.

China’s Ministry of National Defense accused Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutton of "ideological bias" after he said the country would do "whatever we can" to keep China from attacking Taiwan, Sky News reported.
