Regarding the Ukraine request for other countries to declare Ukraine a no-fly zone, I'm curious why Ukraine cannot do this. Is it because they cannot enforce it against Russia? Why doesn't Ukraine declare their country a no-fly zone and use their fighter jets to shoot rogue aircraft out of the sky?

"As the violence unfolded, the US moved quickly to thwart any further attacks. At 9:45 a.m. (Eastern Time), one hour after the first passenger airline flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered all civilian aircraft to land. The National Airspace System was officially shut down at 11:06 a.m.

David Collenette, Canada’s transport minister, followed suit, grounding all flights in and out of Canadian airports. Canada’s military took control of the skies, implementing the Emergency Security Control of Air Traffic Plan, something usually reserved for times of war."

I think maybe the planes they do have are better to use to destroy the ground troops and supplies, then they bug out when Russian fighter planes approach? I would think every plane the Ukraines have is too precious for dog fighting?

  • Russian Navy Landing Ships Seen Approaching Ukrainian Coast Near Odessa - Naval News
  • ''Click to Enlarge. Analysis of Sentinel 2 satellite imagery shows three groups of warships approaching the coast. We can say with confidence that these are Russian, and include landing ships.''

  • Russian-Advance-Odessa-Mar-15-770x410.jpg

  • 15 Mar 2022
''Russian Navy ships can be seen in satellite imagery approaching the Ukrainian Coast. The Sentinel 2 satellite image, taken at 11:47 local time, shows at least 14 vessels.

The vessels were found by Naval News with the help of Damien Symon, an independent defense analyst. Preliminary analysis of the vessels suggests 3 groups. Two are made up of combatants, and one has several landing ships. The landing ships appear to have sailed directly from their staging position off the Crimean coast. Analysts are searching the imagery for more vessels.

    Provisional identification of the ships
The northern group, in a line-astern formation, appears to be led by a tug boat or minesweeper. Behind it are two Ropucha class landing ships, another tug boat and a trailing Ropucha.

The second group, labelled Group 2 on the graphic, are in a square formation. These appear to be smaller warships such as missile corvettes.

The southern group, labelled Group 1, is led by the Slava Class cruiser Moskva. This appears to have two Alligator class landing ships, and the Ivan Gren class landing ship Pyotr Morgunov. There is also a smaller warship, possibly a Buyan-M class missile corvette.''

Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova appears in court after on-air Ukraine protest

The offense is an "administrative charge," which is comparable to a misdemeanor in the U.S. The Russian news agency RIA reported Ovsyannikova was fined 30,000 rubles ($280) by the court.

Could it be at all related to.....OIL ???
smh

I'm thinking, given the nations involved, that it has more to do with the Joint Expeditionary Force.

Link here to some basics on the JEF.
UK Joint Expeditionary Force - Wikipedia

Essentially, sovereign nations can belong to more than one alliance at a time - as their respective governments see fit. Each alliance can work independently of another.

Think "Big Brother" ... plenty of house guests in multiple alliances at one time.

The JEF is made up of:
International partners[edit]
Together with the British Armed Forces, the following nine nations may form part of the JEF as required.[4]

Ahhh ... and here we go as of 37 minutes ago!

GREAT articles... the superyachts are more than just the showy trinket symbols of these oligarchs.. they are the direct reason for this poorly developed military!

However, I question Andrey Kozyrev's assessment of Putin himself;

But Kozyrev, whose stint as foreign secretary came as Russia sought closer ties with the West after the collapse of the Soviet Union, said he believes Putin is a rational decision-maker whose poor assumptions led him into an error.

"So, in my opinion, he is rational. Given that he is rational, I strongly believe he will not intentionally use nuclear weapons against the West," Kozyrev said.

If more and more Russian military turn themselves in...... wow.

War should be over by May when Russia runs out of troops – Zelenskiy adviser

The war in Ukraine should be over by May because Russia will run out of resources to keep the invasion going, Oleksiy Arestovich, an adviser to the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, has claimed.

Citing a video published by several Ukrainian media outlets, Reuters reports that Arestovich said the exact timing would depend on how much resources the Kremlin was willing to commit to the campaign.

“I think that no later than in May, early May, we should have a peace agreement, maybe much earlier, we will see, I am talking about the latest possible dates,” Arestovich said.

“We are at a fork in the road now: there will either be a peace deal struck very quickly, within a week or two, with troop withdrawal and everything, or there will be an attempt to scrape together some, say, Syrians for a round two and, when we grind them too, an agreement by mid-April or late April.”

[...]

I keep thinking about how and what if this possibly could go on for weeks, months, years. Agreed, May is a long time for this continued tragedy and suffering for so many, each day is a travesty. But if there is hope this won’t last years, then I suppose that’s something. It’s all so terrible. I know we all wish this didn’t go on for another day, and never happened.

I had nightmares about all this last night, so this is how deeply it has affected me from a distance. This is cheesy, but I had a dream there was handsome, handsome man with a fancy RV, he wanted to rescue and take me away before the invaders arrived, who were on a train and I could see the train in the distance, in the dark. I wanted to escape so badly, but there wasn’t room for my whole family, so I stayed behind because I wasn’t going to leave them. Then the train arrived and I could see scary figures approaching, and I ran in the house and told everyone to hide! And we were all hiding. I was terrified they were going to execute all of us. It felt like Hitler times, the Nazis going to door to door.

Anyway, my point is I/we feel this all so deeply, and the fear for these poor people, their homes and hospitals and schools and everything being blown up, invaders coming. I felt that fear in my dream. These poor people, children, will feel the effects of PTSD, etc., I’m sure, but many will also one day be triumphant and tell their stories, as we have seen in the past with others who fled the Nazis. The strength and will of these people...

It’s so hard to process and understand how a man, a person, could do something like this, Bomb, kill and maim innocent civilians. It’s all so disturbing, I know we all feel the same. It’s so upsetting because I/we feel so powerless. How can one man have so much power??

One thing I find interesting (and very scary) is listening/watching to different military experts analyzing and predicting Putin, talking about his past, his experience, his state of mind, his potential goals, and what he might do next. These videos are quite different from one to another. I’ll see one where an expert will say him hitting the nuclear button is likely, then another who says the opposite.

To all the people suffering, may you find strength and may this come to an end ASAP..

QAnon alive and well in supporting Russian claims, and not Ukraine.
Ukranians are dying, the whole world is on the alert to the atrocities, and these people are only fueling Putin's lies, rather than getting truth to the Russians.... this is really painful..

Pyrra Technologies, a cybersecurity and threat intelligence company, said the first mention of biolabs came on the far-right social network Gab on Feb. 14, 10 days before the invasion.

The post largely sat idle for days.

Boosted by far-right influencers on the day of the invasion, an anonymous QAnon Twitter account titled @WarClandestine pushed the “biolabs” theory to new heights, using the same “US biolabs” graphic initially included on the Gab post that went largely unshared the week before.

Russian and Chinese officials have also boosted the theory. On Tuesday, China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry began pushing the conspiracy theory, asking for a “full account” of Ukraine’s “biological military activities at home and abroad.”

Much of the false information is flourishing in Russian social media, far-right online spaces and U.S. conservative media, including Tucker Carlson’s show on Fox News.

PolitiFact has debunked the theories, and no evidence of U.S.-run bioweapons labs in Ukraine has been put forward. Avril Haines, the director of national intelligence, told the Senate Intelligence Committee the U.S. has no evidence that Ukraine has pursued bioweapons and that the only assistance provided by the U.S. was “in the context of biosafety.”

Today, President Zelesky appealed for help, on live tv, to Canadian Parliament. Tomorrow, on live tv, he will address the U.S. Congress. Also, tomorrow President Biden is scheduled to respond to President Zelesky's speech.

Zelesky wants a no-fly zone over Ukraine and NATO has lots of reasons not to comply.

How can President Biden respond to help Ukraine?

(above is my question. below is definition from link)
What is a no-fly zone, and what would enforcing one take?

No-fly zones prevent a country from using warplanes to attack military targets or civilians on the ground, but simply declaring airspace off-limits is not enough.

Once declared, NATO would be responsible for patrolling the area with its own planes and would have to be prepared to fire at enemy ones to ensure the safety of civilians on the ground.

"There’s tremendous reluctancy on the part of the Pentagon and the political establishment," Mark Cancian, senior adviser to the Washington-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, said in an interview. "The president and NATO have been very emphatic, and the reason is that it’s a combat mission."

"We'd be flying dozens of aircraft, maybe hundreds of aircraft, over Ukraine and shooting
at the Russians, and they’d be shooting at us," Cancian said.

What is a no-fly zone, and why has NATO so far rejected calls for one over Ukraine?

U.S. sanctions will not stop Putin. What does our country have to stop Putin and help Ukraine? i.e. now, when action is critical?

Ukraine is addressing various NATO governments individually (Canada today) to impress upon them the dire situation in Ukraine. Obviously, no individual government has any role in responding to Ukraine's request for a no-fly zone without officially departing from NATO and making that decision alone. No individual country speaks for NATO.

Of course. And thus, beyond of a member of NATO's sphere of influence?

Ukraine's first lady Olena Zelenska issues plea to the world: 'STOP WAR'

With targets on the backs of her and her husband and from an undisclosed safe place, Ukraine's first lady Olena Zelenska sent out a desperate two-word plea to America and the world: "STOP WAR."

In an exchange of written messages with ABC News, Zelenska described the blitz of Russian missiles raining on Ukraine and the deaths of civilians, including at least 71 children, as "genocide."

"I guess my message is very similar to the one the whole world delivers. Only two simple words: STOP WAR," the 44-year-old Zelenska wrote, unable to speak by phone or in-person due to high-security risks.

Now 20 days into Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a senior defense official tells reporters that security assistance from U.S. and others has continued to flow into Ukraine, including weapons sent in the last 24 hours.
