Russia has given Ukraine until 5am to surrender Mariupol, after which it says it'll let the 130,000 remaining civilians leave. The language it uses for Kyiv's forces – "nationalists," "foreign mercenaries," "bandits" – leaves little doubt about what Russia has in store for them.

Are these maybe the people being tortured and abused as alleged on Twitter? I saw a video on Twitter of people lying on their stomachs with their pants down, rear ends exposed, supposedly including women and children, being beaten, as you hear laughing in the background. I clicked away immediately so not sure if real. I think it was. Jmo.
<snipped for focus>

I saw something like that too, - on twitter - not sure what is going on.
Saw several videos...
Am shocked,this is gruesome!

“Lay down your arms,” Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev, the director of the Russian National Center for Defense Management, said in a briefing distributed by the defence ministry.
“A terrible humanitarian catastrophe has developed,” Mizintsev said. (No kidding, it just 'developed' o_O )
“All who lay down their arms are guaranteed safe passage out of Mariupol.”

“The Mariupol authorities now have the opportunity to make a choice and go over to the side of the people, otherwise the military tribunal that awaits them is just a little that they deserve for their terrible crimes, which the Russian side is very carefully documenting,” he said.

Russian-Ukraine war latest: thousands of Mariupol residents ‘being deported to remote parts of Russia’ – live | World news | The Guardian

The New York Times has some more detail on the claims by Mariupol City Council that residents are being taken to Russia against their will.

Pyotr Andryuschenko, an assistant to the city’s mayor, accused Russian forces of taking “between 4,000 and 4,500 Mariupol residents forcibly across the border to Taganrog” without their passports.

This article says they are taking Ukraine residents to "economically depressed" Russian cities, where they have to remain.

“After the inspection, some Mariupol residents were transported to Taganrog and from there sent by rail to various economically depressed cities in Russia.
“Our citizens have been issued papers that require them to be in a certain city. They have no right to leave it for at least two years with the obligation to work at the specified place of work. The fate of others remains unknown.”

Guernica, Stalingrad, Grozny, Aleppo... now the senseless destruction of Mariupol will be recorded alongside those atrocities.

Greek diplomat compares Mariupol to Aleppo and Stalingrad

A Greek diplomat who was caught in the Russian bombardment of Mariupol says the besieged city's devastation is like that of Guernica, Stalingrad, Grozny and Aleppo.

Manolis Androulakis, Greece's Consul General in Mariupol, flew back to Athens on Tuesday after organising several successful evacuations of Greek nationals and ethnic Greeks.

He called on people to "unite their voices to ask for a truce, a ceasefire".

Androulakis has been hailed as a hero in Greece for staying in Mariupol during the bombardment. He said Mariupol will be remembered as a city "completely destroyed by the war".

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky describes the shelling of Mariupol as a war crime.

Androulakis said that "right now, civilians are hit blindly and helplessly" in the port city.

“In 24 hours, which made my efforts even harder, all the infrastructure was destroyed, everything was bombed, electricity, water, communications.”

I'd like to know. Lay down your arms, or what? Surrender your citizens or what?

This was Project Dynamo's second successful attempt at rescuing babies from the war-torn country since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Earlier this month, the non-profit had also recovered twin American premature babies and a British premature baby, it said.

What about the 1300 still in the theatre and all those other people stuck in bomb shelters? Since their army haven't been able to defeat Mariupol, what exactly are they planning to do after 5am?

Ukraine rejects Russia's demand to surrender Mariupol. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk responded to Russia by stating that surrender is not an option. The letter from Russia’s Defense Ministry said it would only establish a humanitarian corridor if Mariupol surrenders.
