Maybe we should be asking how to tell Canadians apart from Russian spies? imo.

‘A very capable spy’: Book reveals how RCMP caught KGB agent posing as Canadian - National | Globalnews.ca
''On Jan. 30, 1961, acting on information uncovered by the RCMP, Britain’s MI-5 security service examined the penis of a man who purported to be a Canadian named Gordon Lonsdale and confirmed he was a KGB spy.

''Stealing the identities of Canadians is a common Russian spy stunt, but choosing Molody to double as Lonsdale was a fatal oversight by the KGB, and one the RCMP helped expose.''

''MI-5 soon focused on Harry Houghton, a former British naval attaché in Warsaw who fit the profile supplied by Sniper. While under surveillance, Houghton met in London with a man MI-5 identified as a Canadian jukebox salesman, Gordon Lonsdale.''

''But MI-5 needed “irrefutable evidence” that the man who said he was Lonsdale was an imposter, Barnes said.
So the RCMP kept at it, and on Jan. 16, 1961, they reported to MI-5 they had found something: Lonsdale’s father in northern Ontario had given a statement, and he was adamant his son had been circumcised.''
“And so they had a pretty immediate and very confidential medical exam of certain private parts of Lonsdale,” Barnes said. He was not circumcised. “So that was a crucial bit of information for MI-5 because they knew that this man was not who he pretended to be.”

''The other two members of the spy ring posing as Canadians, Lona and Morris Cohen, had long been sought by the FBI. Lona Cohen had been a KGB courier, sent to Canada to collect documents and, on one occasion, a uranium sample, from the atomic research centre at Chalk River.''

''In 1996, CSIS caught a pair of Russian spies who were living in Toronto as a married couple, Ian and Laurie Lambert. They were using the identities of two Canadians who died as infants.''

''Another Russian illegal was arrested in 2006 in Montreal, where he was living as Paul William Hampel. Again in 2010, two Russian spies using the names of dead Canadian children, Ann Foley and Don Heathfield, were caught by the FBI.''

Canadian sniper ‘Wali’ alive in Ukraine — he was ‘last to learn of his own death’ | The Star
''Reports of a famed Canadian sniper’s demise at the hand of Russian forces in Ukraine have proved premature.

A man known as “Wali” and dubbed by some online news sites as the “deadliest sniper in the world” spoke with the Star in a video interview Tuesday morning in which he said he was “the last to learn of his own death.”

The 40-year-old Quebec soldier, who asked that his real name not be used, left in early March to join Ukrainian forces on the front lines. He said Russians fired at him for three days, but that he had returned from his first mission near Kyiv unscathed, despite at least one close call.

“I was in this amazing apartment — it would look the same in Toronto downtown, an espresso machine and nice TV,” he said. “I was standing in the kitchen and I saw the huge fireball. And glass went everywhere.”

For now, he says he’s safe — aside from the cough plaguing several front-line fighters, he says, though it’s not clear if it’s COVID-19 or something else — and back away from the front lines. He said he learned of online rumours of his own death when he turned on his phone to find social-media speculation about him and messages from friends, worried about his fate.''

I learned a little bit of Russian and one of the hardest things to get used to was the pronunciation of 'o'. In Russian all unstressed 'o's are pronounced like 'a'. So if there are several 'o's in a word, the only one that is pronounced like 'o' is the syllable that the stress falls on. I don't speak any Ukrainian but it seems they pronounce all their 'o's like 'o' whether stressed or unstressed. So I don't know - if you notice a lot of 'o' sounds when they speak, they are more likely to be Ukrainian rather than Russian?

Depends on the area. Moscow, definitely, o=a. Northern parts, more like "o". In the Ural mountains, the vowels are pronounced slightly differently.

Hi I was allowed to link this FB post.

This woman lives in Mariupol. She has been posting about the life in the city. Heart-breaking. If there is no translation (should be, but not for me as my FB is English/Russian), please ask, I shall help. But it has 1.5K shares, many in English FBs, so I assume, translation function is available. One day, it will be the diary of this war. It says, log in to see.

''#mariupol #hope I go outside in between bombings. I need to walk the dog. She constantly whines, shivers and hides behind my legs. I want to sleep all the time. My yard surrounded by high-rise buildings is quiet and dead. I'm no longer afraid to look around.

Opposite, the entrance of the one hundred and fifth house burns out. Flames have devoured five floors and are slowly chewing on the sixth. In the room, the fire burns neatly, as in a fireplace. Black charred windows stand without glass. From them, like tongues, fall the curtains swallowed by flames. I look at it calmly and doomedly.

I'm sure I'm going to die soon. That's a matter of days. In this city, everyone is constantly waiting for death. I just want it to be not very scary. Three days ago, a friend of my older nephew came to us and told us that there was a direct hit on the fire department. Rescue guys were killed. One woman had her arm, leg and head blown off. I dream that my body parts will remain in place, even after the explosion of the bomb.

I don't know why, but I think it's important. Although, on the other hand, they will not be buried during hostilities anyway. That's what the police told us when we caught them on the street and asked what to do with the dead grandmother of our friend. They advised to put it on the balcony. I wonder how many balconies there are dead bodies?

Our house on Prospekt Mira is the only one without direct hits. He was hit twice tangentially by shells, in some apartments the windows flew out, but he was almost not injured and looks lucky compared to the rest of the houses.

The entire yard is covered with several layers of ash, glass, plastic and metal shards. I try not to look at the iron fool coming to the playground. I think it's a missile, or maybe a mine. I don't care, it's just unpleasant. In the window of the third floor I see someone's face and I twitch. Turns out I'm afraid of real people.

My dog starts howling and I realize that now they will shoot again. I'm standing outside during the day, and there's a cemetery silence all around. There are no cars, no voices, no children, no grandmothers on the benches. Even the wind died. There are still a few people here. They lie on the side of the house and in the parking lot, covered with outer clothing. I don't want to look at them. I'm afraid I'll see someone I know.

All life in my city is now smouldering in basements. It looks like a candle in our compartment. There's nothing to do to pay it off. Any vibration or breeze and darkness will come. I try to cry, but I can't. I feel sorry for myself, my family, my husband, my neighbors, my friends. I go back to the basement and listen to the vile iron grinding there. Two weeks have passed, and I no longer believe that there was once a different life.

In Mariupol, people continue to sit in the basement. Every day it is harder for them to survive. They have no water, no food, no light, they can't even go outside because of the constant shelling. Mariupol residents must live. Help them. Tell them about it. Let everyone know that civilians continue to be killed.''

Watching Wolf Blitzer right now, reporting that Russia is on to a new
tactic against Mariupol. They are attacking the city now with missiles from battleships stationed in the Sea of Atov.

I genuinely can't imagine how the city and its people can survive.

I'm glad that's been on the news now. Anything I've seen today wasn't an approved source.

I have a feeling Putin will say the ones who have died or will perish in Mariupol are Nazis and they carefully vetted those that were able to escape. JMO

Russian forces are now inside the besieged southern city of Mariupol, a senior US defence official said. Two “super-powerful bombs” rocked Mariupol on Tuesday even as rescue efforts were ongoing, local authorities said.

More than 200,000 people are trapped in the city, where the situation has been described as a “freezing hellscape riddled with dead bodies and destroyed buildings”, Human Rights Watch said.

Russia plans to unleash a “great terror” on the southern occupied city of Kherson by kidnapping residents and taking them across the Russian border, an FSB whistleblower has claimed

A letter, thought to have been written by a member of Russia’s domestic security service and dated from Monday, said the Kremlin was no longer willing to “play nicely” with protesters in the Ukrainian city

A “great terror” coordinated by the security services would aim to reduce protest with “extremely strict methods of dispersal”, including “severe injury” to individual demonstrators.

A second phase would involve “door-to-door terror” with residents kidnapped and taken abroad, the letter said.

What exactly happens if Russia attacks with nuclear weapons? Five questions

1. How can Russia strike with nuclear weapons?

"It is unlikely that Russia will attack New York or Paris with long-range missiles. That is suicide. The most likely would be that Putin deploys a tactical nuclear weapon. That fits within the Russian doctrine for the use of advanced weapons; as a kind of warning shot ."

2. Putin has already armed his nuclear weapons. What does this mean?

"First the troops are prepared. Think of captains on submarines with nuclear weapons. Nuclear warheads can then be attached to missiles. Aircraft with missiles with nuclear warheads can conduct patrols. It seems that this has not been carried out, intelligence services would not have observed that ."

"Putin is not using it as a deterrent, as in the Cold War, but as a means of coercion. He is trying to force the US and Europe not to impose more sanctions or to make arms deliveries."

“Russia is now also arresting supporters of Putin (and cycling)
In Russia, any protest against the war in Ukraine has been severely crushed. Even if there is only suspicion that you are against the war you will be arrested. Last weekend about 5000 people were arrested and one bicycle. Even Putin supporters need to be careful now.
