Ukraine war: US wants to see a weakened Russia - BBC News

April 25 2022
''US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has said he hopes Russian losses in Ukraine will deter its leadership from repeating its actions elsewhere.

Ukraine can still win the war if given the right support, he added.

He also announced the US would allocate an extra $713m (£559m) of military aid to Ukraine and other European nations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of attempting to "split Russian society and destroy Russia from within".

Mr Austin, a retired four-star general, was speaking after meeting Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Also involving Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the visit marked the highest-level trip to Ukraine by US officials since the invasion began over two months ago.''

Yes, interesting isn't it? For me it feels the German negotiators had one glass to many when they agreed to this deal.

Switzerland refuses permission to re-export arms to Ukraine <source = Swissradio in English>

Switzerland has refused a request by Germany to allow it to re-export Swiss bought ammunition to Ukraine.

Germany would like to send infantry vehicles to Ukraine, but they use ammunition made in Switzerland.

Under Swiss arms laws, it cannot export – or allow the reexport – of weapons to conflict zones.

The Marder vehicle is made in Germany, but it’s designed to use Swiss made ammunition.

Under neutrality laws – countries that buy Swiss weaponry must agree it will not be re-sold or donated to another country without Swiss consent.

Well, guess , it has something to do with export permits and based on country made (and maybe because Russia is in war with Ukraine:

"The Netherlands is going to send fifty rocket launchers with four hundred German-made missiles to Ukraine. Minister Kajsa Ollongren reports this to the House. Germany's permission was required for this, because a German export license is required after purchasing the weapons. It was provided by the German government at the end of the afternoon today."

General Staff: Russia places Iskander missile systems 60 kilometers from Ukraine’s border. According to the latest update from Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Russia has parked the Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile systems 60 kilometers from Ukraine’s border.

Above post was snipped by me for focus.

60 kilometers is only around 37 miles for the metric challenged...like me.

..."The missile systems are to replace the obsolete OTR-21 Tochka systems, still in use by the Russian armed forces, by 2020.
The Iskander has several different conventional warheads, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel-air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high explosive-fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions. The missile can also carry nuclear warheads."...

Russia-Ukraine war: military aid means Nato is ‘in essence engaged in war with Russia’, claims Lavrov – live (theguardian.com)
''Western military aid means Nato 'in essence engaged in war with Russia', Lavrov says

More from Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, who also spoke to state television in an interview that was posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry website.

In it, he said that deliveries of western weaponry to Ukraine mean that the Nato alliance is “in essence engaged in war with Russia” and Moscow views these weapons as legitimate targets, according to Reuters.

“These weapons will be a legitimate target for Russia’s military acting within the context of the special operation,” Lavrov said.

“Storage facilities in western Ukraine have been targeted more than once (by Russian forces). How can it be otherwise?” Lavrov said. “Nato, in essence, is engaged in a war with Russia through a proxy and is arming that proxy. War means war.”

We will see Russia's collapse in our lifetime: Ukraine's RNBO chief Danilov | Euromaidan Press
In an interview with Ukrayinska Pravda, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (RNBO) Oleksiy Danilov chief told about when Ukraine started preparing for war with Russia, why Ukraine’s partners thought Ukraine would fall to Russia, how long the war could last, and what chances the war offers Ukraine. We bring you the main points of the interview.

On how Ukraine prepared for war
We prepared for war by organizing its territorial defense. The RNBO adopted decisions, formed the officer corps of the territorial defense battalions.

About plans to assassinate Zelenskyy
[...]

In the first days of the invasion, the plans for Zelenskyy assassination were confirmed over and over, I had to inform him each time, causing his irritation.

On 22 February, Ukraine got a top-secret document stating that Zelenskyy’s assassination could take place at the nearest time.

“I immediately contacted the president, we met, he said: ‘What, again?’ I answered that this should be treated very seriously, you are the highest official of a great country. And do not joke about it in any case, because it is a very serious thing.

Accordingly, his personal security, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, the Prime Minister, the Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the State Security Department were notified,” Danilov recalled.

[...]

About how the west thought Ukraine would lose
The intelligence agencies of Ukraine’s partners predicted a partisan war and believed Ukraine couldn’t withstand the second most powerful army in the world. One of them gave Ukraine 21 days at the most.

[...]

On how long the war will take
The territories that were liberated — Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy, Chernihiv oblasts — were liberated thanks to our military and the resistance. Few people know how well the partisans worked in Sumy Oblast — it held first place among all the regions in terms of the partisan movement.

Hard to say how long war will take; processes have already started in Russia. I said many times that Russia’s collapse will be the result of this situation. It will fall apart as an artificial formation, and this will happen in our lifetime.

[...]

Hard to say who the mediators in Ukraine-Russia talks could be. France and Germany mediated for eight years in Donbas and still don’t understand why elections under occupation are a bad idea.

Zelenskyy changed the policies of many countries with his behavior and his direct appeals. He proposes to return truth to politics.

On Mariupol
[...]

I want you and me to be aware that now because the guys are there [holding defense in the besieged city], they are drawing away large groups of Russian troops. When we started sending helicopters there in the night, they said to bring ammunition, not food or water.

[...]

On Ukraine’s historical chance
This is our historical chance to build a [proper] country. Moreover, if processes that existed in Ukraine over the last 30 years persist after the war’s end, the Lord won’t forgive us, won’t grant us the opportunity to build a state; it must be completely new: sincere, open, like our president now.

Kyiv will dismantle a Soviet-era monument and rename streets linked to Russia | WFSU News
90

''For decades, a large titanium arch has stood in central Kyiv, towering over a sculpture of two men holding up a medal representing the Soviet Union's Order of Friendship of Peoples.

The rainbow-shaped installation is called the People's Friendship Arch and was gifted to Ukraine by the Soviet government in 1982 as a symbol of the relationship between the Russia and Ukraine.

The arch has become increasingly controversial over the years, as tensions have risen. After Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, for example, activists painted a large crack across the top. And now, as Russia wages all-out war in Ukraine, locals are split on what to do with it.

When NPR's Scott Detrow spoke to Kyiv residents earlier this month about what should happen to the arch, one wanted it preserved as a reminder of the war while another offered a suggestion that wasn't exactly fit for the airwaves.

On Monday, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that a decision had been made.

He said that the statue of the men will be dismantled but that the arch will remain standing, with some alterations: It will be renamed and highlighted with the colors of the Ukrainian flag.''

Explosions rock Moldova after Russia suggests it could be its next target in Europe

Good article that explains well what is going on in Moldova in the Russian region between Moldova and Ukraine. The title of this article is somewhat misleading, IMO.

Trans-Dniester, a strip of land with about 470,000 people between Moldova and Ukraine, has been under the control of separatist authorities since a 1992 war with Moldova.

Though a peace treaty between Trans-Dniester and the Moldovan government has been in place, the breakaway state has similarities to the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics in the Donbas region of Ukraine, which served as Putin’s justification for his illegal invasion in February.

Russia bases about 1,500 troops in Trans-Dniester, nominally as peacekeepers, but concerns are high that the forces could be used to invade Ukraine.

Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation | United Nations Secretary-General

The Secretary-General met with the President of the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr. Vladimir Putin, in Moscow this afternoon.

During the tête-a-tête meeting, the Secretary-General reiterated the United Nations’ position on Ukraine, and they discussed the proposals for humanitarian assistance and evacuation of civilians from conflict zones, namely in relation to the situation in Mariupol.

The President agreed, in principle, to the involvement of the United Nations and the International Committee for the Red Cross in the evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol.
