Russia-Ukraine war latest: Putin defends ‘noble’ invasion; alleged Mariupol chemical attack investigated – live (theguardian.com)

3h ago 06:35
A British man fighting in Ukraine has said his unit has no choice but to surrender to Russian forces in the besieged city of Mariupol, his family and friends told the BBC.

Aiden Aslin, from Newark, Nottinghamshire, is a marine in the Ukrainian military after moving to Ukraine in 2018. Over the past few weeks, his unit has been defending the southern port city of Mariupol, which has come under heavy bombardment by Russian forces.

His mother, Ang Wood, told the BBC:

He called me and said they have no weapons left to fight. I love my son. He is my hero. They put up one hell of a fight.

But he sounded OK. Boris [Johnson] needs to take Putin down.

A friend of Aslin also said he had spoken to him by phone and was told the unit had no food, ammunition or supplies, leaving them no option but to surrender.

He said:

They can’t get out. They can’t fight back. So they had no choice. I’m sure sure if they had a bullet left, they would have shot it.

German president not welcome at Zelensky • Putin's Ukrainian friend arrested

German president not welcome at Zelensky
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wanted to travel to Kiev to show "European solidarity with Ukraine" but was not welcome, he told Bild newspaper .

The reason, according to Bild, is his close ties with Russia in recent years. Steinmeier was a strong supporter of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and is seen as "the architect of the federal government's Russia-friendly politics," the magazine writes.

Polish President Duda wanted to travel to Kiev with Steinmeier and their counterparts from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. These politicians are allowed by President Zelensky, Bild writes.

Putin's friend handcuffed in Ukraine
The Ukrainian security service SBU has arrested a Ukrainian politician and businessman who is friends with Russian President Putin. President Zelensky shared a photo of Viktor Medvedchuk in handcuffs on Telegram . Medvedchuk is the leader of Ukraine's largest opposition party. According to Reuters news agency , Putin is his daughter's godfather.

Medvedchuk had been under house arrest since May last year for financing separatists in Donetsk and Lugansk. He escaped on Feb. 27, three days after the raid, a government adviser said. Medvedchuk's lawyer said he was forced to move elsewhere because of threats and that he had informed the authorities.

  • Two weeks after Istanbul, there is hardly any talk between Russia and Ukraine

At the end of March, there was a glimmer of hope over the Bosphorus. In Istanbul, concrete results were achieved for the first time in the talks between Russia and Ukraine. The Russians pledged to withdraw from the regions around Kiev, Ukraine said the status of Crimea and Donbas could be discussed.

Now there seems to be little left of a view of more, such as a possible truce. "There is almost no talk anymore," says defense expert Bob Deen van Clingendael. "Actually only on an operational level, such as about the exchange of prisoners of war."

  • Four journalists sentenced to forced labor in Russia
A Russian court has sentenced four journalists from a student magazine to two years of hard labour. According to the judge, they have called on young people to demonstrate against the Kremlin, the Russian news agency Interfax reported. They are also not allowed to use the internet for three years.

The independent news medium DOXA was founded five years ago by students and graduates of the Moscow Higher School of Economics. The magazine, which has since been blocked, focused on student life, educational news, politics and science.

The four journalists were arrested in April 2021 after a raid on the editorial office. This happened during the period when the Russian police cracked down on allies of opposition leader Navalny.

According to DOXA, a video is the reason for last year's arrests. In that video, DOXA said it is illegal for universities to expel students who participated in pro-Navalny protests. The media says the video was removed following a request from the media regulator.

The four reporters say they will appeal the verdict.

I am of the opinion the 36th marine brigade may have escaped from where they were essentially pinned down and united with the Azoz regiment.

I will state that as opinion until I find a good confirming link. As we all know, finding a good source out of Mariupol is basically impossible right now.

Biden calls atrocities in Ukraine a 'genocide' for the first time - CNNPolitics

"I called it genocide because it's become clearer and clearer that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is just trying to wipe out even the idea of being Ukrainian. The evidence is mounting," Biden told reporters in Iowa after using the term earlier in a speech.

"It's different than it was last week, the more evidence that's coming out," he continued. "Literally, the horrible things that the Russians have done in Ukraine -- and we're going to only learn more and more about the devastation."

"We'll let the lawyers decide, internationally, whether or not it qualifies," he concluded, "but it sure seems that way to me."

Volodymyr Zelensky says Joe Biden 'true leader' after US President calls Russian invasion of Ukraine 'genocide'

"True words of a true leader @POTUS," Zelensky tweeted. "Calling things by their names is essential to stand up to evil. We are grateful for US assistance provided so far and we urgently need more heavy weapons to prevent further Russian atrocities."

JMO but I think this change in stance (from last week where he would only call it "war crimes") is further indication that the US is planning to escalate their military assistance to the region.

The Biden administration is poised to dramatically expand the scope of weapons it’s providing Ukraine, U.S. officials say, potentially sending Mi-17 helicopters that can be equipped to attack vehicles, armored Humvees and a range of other arms.

Speaking at an event about inflation in Iowa, Biden said to the audience, “Your family budget, your ability to fill up your tank, none of it should hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commits genocide a half a world away.”

A White House adviser quickly went on TV to clarify that Biden’s words did not reflect a change in U.S. policy towards Ukraine.

Biden acknowledged that the legal definition of “genocide” was separate from his impression of what’s going on in Ukraine.

However, the person attacked is the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, who is now published only in Europe. Could anyone even check:

“Seven Novaya Gazeta journalists, including Yuri Shchekochikhin, Anna Politkovskaya and Anastasia Baburova, have been murdered since 2000, in connection with their investigations.[4]

In October 2021, Novaya Gazeta's editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, alongside Maria Ressa, for their safeguarding of freedom of expression in their homelands.[5]

On 28 March 2022, due to the ongoing 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the newspaper suspended its print activities after receiving a second warning from Roskomnadzor.[6]

So basically, its only site is novayagazeta.eu

They are trying their best to bring the truth about the war to the Russians who are now behind the iron curtain. Please approve it as the source. Not for me, for the seven journalists who died for the truth.
