Ukrainian authorities say Shariy has been spreading disinformation to harm Ukraine's national security, while being paid for it by Russia. Shariy has lived in exile in EU since 2012. He founded a political party active in Ukraine. It was banned under martial law in February.

Why would he be arrested in Spain for crimes of high treason in Ukraine?

Do we know how many civilians still need to be evacuated from Azovstal? IIRC, about a week ago I read that there were 1,000 civilians trapped, but then I read that 100 were evacuated recently, and that about 200 civilians were still inside. So not sure of the actual numbers. If there are evacuations over the next three days, as has been posted that this is being planned, then surely all civilians will be out by this weekend, if 200 is the accurate number. I hope that is the case.

Civilians trapped in Azovstal steel plant need to be dug out by hand, says Zelenskyy - ABC News
''Civilians including women and children will need to be dug from bunkers under a steelworks that is the last holdout of resistance in Ukraine's Mariupol, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says.

Key points:
  • Russia says it will pause military activity at the Azovstal plant to allow an estimated 200 civilians to leave
  • A school and kindergarten in Kramatorsk were shelled by Russian forces, wounding 25
  • Belarus's president said he did not expect the war to 'drag on this way'

After failing to capture the capital Kyiv in the early weeks of a war that has killed thousands and flattened cities, towns and villages, Russia accelerated its attacks across southern and eastern Ukraine.

Russia's military said it would pause military activity at the Azovstal steelworks in the port city of Mariupol during Thursday daytime and the following two days to allow civilians to leave.

The United Nations and Red Cross evacuated hundreds of people from Mariupol and other areas this week but an estimated 200 civilians, as well as Ukrainian fighters, are still holed up in a network of underground bunkers at Azovstal, Ukrainian officials say.

In an early morning address, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine stood ready to ensure a ceasefire in Mariupol.

"It will take time simply to lift people out of those basements, out of those underground shelters," he said.

"In the present conditions, we cannot use heavy equipment to clear the rubble away. It all has to be done by hand."

Thanks. Looks like about 200 civilians still to be evacuated, hope that happens within the next few days.

Easy out from steel mill seen as unlikely for Ukraine troops | AP News
[...]

“They have the right to fight until they are dead, but if they surrender to Russia, they can be detained,” said Marco Sassoli, a professor of international law at the University of Geneva. “It’s simply their choice.”

Laurie Blank, a professor at Emory Law School in Atlanta who specializes in international humanitarian law and law of armed conflict, said injured fighters are considered “hors de combat” — literally “out of the fight” — and can be detained as prisoners of war.

[...]

The wives of at least two Ukrainian soldiers inside Azovstal have been in Rome pleading with the international community for an evacuation of the soldiers there, arguing they deserve the same rights as civilians.

[...]

“We don’t want them to die, they won’t surrender,” Kateryna Prokopenko said. “They are waiting for the bravest countries to evacuate them. We won’t let this tragedy happen after this long blockade.”

[...]

Ukrainian authorities have also demanded that Russia offer the Azovstal soldiers a safe exit — with their arms.

But experts say it would be nearly unprecedented for them to be simply allowed to walk free, not least because they could take up arms again and possibly cause Russian casualties.

“It is unlikely that Russia would allow Ukrainian troops to leave the plant with their weapons and nothing in the law would require that,” Blank said via email.

Instead the Russian military has called on the troops inside Azovstal to lay down their weapons and come out with white flags. It says those who surrender will not be killed, in line with international law.

[...]

In the event the Azovstal fighters were to be taken captive, it’s not clear whether Russia would uphold its commitments under international law regarding POWs, given its alleged previous violations of rules governing war conduct and a lack of evidence for how it has been treating Ukrainian soldiers it already has in custody.

International humanitarian law “grants absolute protection to POWs against ill treatment and murder. Violations of these norms are war crimes,” said Annyssa Bellal, senior researcher and international humanitarian law expert at the Geneva Graduate Institute. “The respect of the norms, though, is dependent on the will of the parties to the conflict.”

[...]

Under the Geneva Conventions, POWs “must at all times be humanely treated” and may not be “subjected to physical mutilation or to medical or scientific experiments” that aren’t justified for health reasons. Members of armed forces who are wounded or sick, meanwhile, “shall be respected and protected in all circumstances.”

Unlike civilians, prisoners of war may be forcibly sent to other countries in order to keep them from returning from the battlefield.

[...]

The International Committee of the Red Cross plays a crucial and nearly exclusive role in conflicts around the world mediating between combatants on matters such as arranging prisoner swaps and monitoring detainee conditions. Among other things, the ICRC collects names of POWs and reports back to their governments and families.

Yet the ICRC has not said whether it has met with any POWs in Russian custody since the war began Feb. 24, a silence that Sassoli said could be a “bad sign.”

[...]

On Tuesday, Pascal Hundt, the ICRC’s chief in Ukraine, told reporters that only civilians were covered in a Russian-Ukrainian deal that led to the recent evacuations from Azovstal. And he expressed uncertainty that anyone else might get out.

“The ICRC has little leverage when it comes to reaching a cease-fire agreement, and it is up to the parties to find agreement and to get these people out,” Hundt said. “We’ll continue to push even if the hope is close to zero, we’ll just continue to push — and we stand ready to go there.”

4h ago 17.38 The US has reportedly offered security assurances to Sweden in the event that it submits an application to join Nato.

Reuters reports that Ann Linde, Sweden’s foreign minister, said Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, assured her Sweden would receive support during the period a potential application to join the alliance is processed. Sweden, as well as its neighbor Finland, stayed out of Nato during the cold war, but the countries are now rethinking security policies after Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea in 2014 and invasion of Ukraine.

3h ago 18.42 Another 344 people have been rescued from the besieged city of Mariupol in a second evacuation operation, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed in his latest national address.

"The second stage of our evacuation operation from Mariupol was completed today. 344 people were rescued - from the city and its suburbs. That’s how many people departed to Zaporizhzhia today. Our team is getting ready to meet them. Meet in the same way as more than 150 people whom we managed to take out of Azovstal. They all receive the necessary help. All of them will receive the most caring treatment from our state.

2h ago 18.55 Russia has said it will implement a ceasefire for three days from Thursday to allow more civilian evacuations from the Azovstal plant in the besieged city of Mariupol.

“The Russian armed forces will from 8 am to 6 pm (Moscow time) on May 5, 6 and 7 open a humanitarian corridor from the territory of the Azovstal metallurgical plant to evacuate civilians,” the defence ministry said on Wednesday.

2h ago 19.47 Russia has said its forces practised simulated nuclear-capable missile strikes in the western enclave of Kaliningrad, sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania along the Baltic Coast.

Russia practised simulated “electronic launches” of nuclear-capable Iskander mobile ballistic missile systems on Wednesday, the defence ministry said in a statement.

[...]

The combat units also practised “actions in conditions of radiation and chemical contamination”.

Russia’s state television has attempted to make nuclear weapons use more palatable to the public, according to some who spoke to AFP.

“For two weeks now, we have been hearing from our television screens that nuclear silos should be opened,” Russian newspaper editor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov said.
Thank you so much for the ongoing information. Really appreciate it.

This really warms my heart:

U.S. Intelligence Is Helping Ukraine Kill Russian Generals, Officials Say

WASHINGTON — The United States has provided intelligence that has helped Ukrainians target and kill many of the Russian generals who have died in action in the Ukraine war, according to senior American officials.

Ukrainian officials said they have killed approximately 12 generals on the front lines, a number that has astonished military analysts.

The targeting help is part of a classified effort by the Biden administration to provide real-time battlefield intelligence to Ukraine. That intelligence also includes anticipated Russian troop movements gleaned from recent American assessments of Moscow’s secret battle plan for the fighting in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, the officials said. Officials declined to specify how many generals had been killed as a result of U.S. assistance.

The United States has focused on providing the location and other details about the Russian military’s mobile headquarters, which relocate frequently. Ukrainian officials have combined that geographic information with their own intelligence — including intercepted communications that alert the Ukrainian military to the presence of senior Russian officers — to conduct artillery strikes and other attacks that have killed Russian officers.

<snip>

The Biden administration is also supplying new weaponry that should improve Ukraine’s ability to target senior Russian officers. The smaller version of the Switchblade drone, which is now arriving on the battlefield, can be used to identify and kill individual soldiers, and could take out a general sitting in a vehicle or giving orders on a front line.
while I personally think this is great, the Administration needs to STOP talking about it. Let the Russians wonder what is going on and let them think its just the Ukrainians.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive north and east of Kharkiv city secured further gains in the last 24 hours and may successfully push Russian forces out of artillery range of Kharkiv in the coming days. Ukrainian forces captured several settlements north and east of Kharkiv in the last 24 hours, reducing the ability of Russian forces to threaten Ukraine’s second-largest city. Russian forces likely face the choice of sending additional reinforcements intended for eastern Ukraine to support defensive positions on the outskirts of Kharkiv or lose their ability to both shell the city and screen lines of communication through Kharkiv Oblast.

ISW cannot confirm initial reports of a Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missile strike on the Russian frigate Admiral Makarov on May 6.[1] Pentagon Spokesperson John Kirby said the United States cannot confirm the reported strike and added “we’ve been looking at this all day.”[2] ISW will update this assessment with further information as it becomes available.

Russian forces continued assaults on the Azovstal plant on May 6, but ISW cannot confirm any specific advances.[9] Pro-Russian Telegram channels claimed Russian forces captured 100 Ukrainian servicemen attempting to escape Azovstal, though ISW cannot confirm this claim.[10] The Ukrainian Presidential Office announced a new humanitarian corridor opened on May 6, but Russian forces reportedly violated a local ceasefire and launched anti-tank missiles at civilian vehicles evacuating from Azovstal.[11]

Russian forces were observed changing road signs in Mariupol from Ukrainian to Russian on May 5, and Ukrainian officials reported on May 6 that Russian forces are disseminating false information on Ukrainian losses to lower civilian morale.[12] The continued resistance of Ukrainian forces in the Azovstal plant and likely widespread civilian resistance to the Russian occupation may be disrupting previously announced Russian plans to conduct a Victory Day exhibition in Mariupol.

The Ukrainian General Staff and Operational Command South reported that Russian forces continue to provoke tensions in Transnistria and seek ways to provoke an escalation, including by spreading false allegations of Ukrainians shooting into Transnistria.[20]

US intelligence told to keep quiet over role in Ukraine military triumphs

Former US intelligence officers are advising their successors currently in office to shut up and stop boasting about their role in Ukraine’s military successes.

Two stories surfaced in as many days in the American press this week, citing unnamed officials as saying that US intelligence was instrumental in the targeting of Russian generals on the battlefield and in the sinking of the Moskva flagship cruiser on the Black Sea.

The initial report in the New York Times on Wednesday about the generals was partially denied by the White House, which said that while the US shares intelligence with Ukrainian forces, it was not specifically shared with the intent to kill Russian general officers.

The next day, NBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post all quoted officials as saying that US intelligence had helped Ukraine hit the Moskva with anti-ship missiles last month, making it the biggest Russian ship to be sunk since world war two.

As a general rule, espionage is carried out in secret, though western intelligence agencies have turned that rule on its head over the past few months by going public with what they knew about Russian preparations for invasion, and then with daily reports on the battlefield and from behind Russian lines.

The new disclosures are different however, as they concern what the US espionage agencies themselves have been doing, rather than commenting on the state of the war.

In both cases, the US was claiming a hand in historic humiliations for Moscow and for Vladimir Putin, triggering warnings of unintended consequences.

''The war in Ukraine is taking a “heavy toll” on some of Russia’s most capable units and most advanced capabilities, an intelligence briefing from Britain’s defense ministry said Saturday, as rescuers sought to evacuate more civilians from a steel mill in Mariupol.

At least one T-90M, Russia’s most advanced tank, has been destroyed in the fighting, the ministry tweeted in a regular bulletin.
It came as Ukrainian fighters holed up in the Azovstal steel plant make their last stand to prevent Moscow’s complete takeover of Mariupol, a strategically important port-city.
Dozens of people were evacuated from the sprawling site on Friday and handed over to representatives of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, Russian and Ukrainian officials said. They added that evacuation efforts would continue into the weekend.''

''A Russian missile strike on a museum in the northeastern city of Kharkiv caused a fire which engulfed the premises late Friday, the head Kharkiv regional state administration said.
The son of the director of the Hryhoriy Skovoroda National Museum was injured, Oleh Synegubov said in post on his Telegram channel which was translated by NBC News. Synegubov added that the director's son had been staying in the museum to guard it.
The museum, dedicated to Ukrainian philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda, was situated in the 18th century estate which was once his home, Synegubov said, adding that there was no damage to the collection, which had been moved to a safe place prior to the attack.
They can destroy our museum,” he added. “But they cannot destroy our memory and our values.”

''Italy has ordered the seizure of a $700m superyacht linked to Russian president Vladimir Putin. The yacht was stationed in Tuscany where it had been undergoing repairs since September of last year, Reuters reports.
In a statement announcing the seizure order, the finance ministry did not name the owner, saying only that he had ties to “prominent elements of the Russian government.”

Dockside activity indicated that the yacht's crew might have been preparing to go to sea. An organisation set up by the imprisoned Alexei Navalny, a fierce Putin critic, released a report in March saying it had evidence that the boat belonged to Putin.''

That's great news. The article says that it isn't known if civilian men were evacuated, only that women, children and the elderly were evacuated. I would guess that civilian men would not be evacuated, as all civilian men in Ukraine were conscripted to fight in the war, IIRC.
