STATEMENT BY THE HUMANITARIAN COORDINATOR IN UKRAINE

As we try to understand the evolving situation in different parts of the country, I wanted to express our solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

The United Nations and our humanitarian partners are committed to staying and delivering. We are here to support the people exhausted by years of conflict and we are prepared to respond in case of any increase in humanitarian needs.

Humanitarian assistance is guided by the four principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. Our aim is always to provide the most vulnerable civilians with critical humanitarian relief supplies and services, regardless of who or where they are. We remind all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law.

Weren't there rumours a while back? I'm sure I read something, somewhere suggesting he was in poor health (I'm sure I remember thinking it was a good thing and hoping it was true and he would be gone soon) . I have no source or time frame and may have completely imagined the whole thing though.
Have they had an "election" in recent times? This may of been it.

A Ukrainian official said Russian shelling hit a radioactive waste repository and an increase in radiation levels was reported. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter.

It was not immediately possible for experts to access the repository to assess damage before Russian forces overtook the site.

Ukraine no longer in control of Chernobyl site, official says

Found this, also a pic of him from 2020.

Recent footage of Putin, 68, "suggests he has possible symptoms of Parkinson's Disease," the newspaper said, quoting Moscow political scientist Professor Valery Solovei.

Russia denies Putin 'stepping down as leader due to Parkinson's disease'

UK media report that Putin is ill and poised to quit is nonsense, says Kremlin

The Kremlin on Friday rejected as untrue a report in Britain’s mass market Sun newspaper which suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have Parkinson’s disease and be poised to quit early next year.

Eta his face has gotten puffy.

Yes I remember that too. I don’t remember where from but I recall reading about his health a while ago. He is 69 years old so its not far fetched that he is having some health issues.

The disaster that was the Chernobyl explosion and meltdown occurred in 1986, when Ukraine was province of the USSR.

It had a faulty design and was staffed by incompetent Soviet employees.

Timely article:

US braces for Russian cyberattacks as Ukraine conflict escalates. Here's how that might play out | CNN Business

"Ukraine has already faced multiple cyberattacks since the conflict with Russia started, including one on Wednesday that targeted the website of the country's parliament as well as several banks and government agencies.
Analysts say even targeted cyberattacks against Ukraine could potentially have implications beyond the country's borders (both physical and virtual). In a report Tuesday, analysts at S&P Global Ratings flagged "a heightened risk of cyberattacks on Ukraine... which could create knock-on effects for corporations, governments, and other parties in the region and beyond."
Companies worldwide that work with organizations in Ukraine need to be particularly careful, the analysts added, "since connections to Ukrainian systems might be used as a pivot point to other targets."

"Even if Russian hackers don't directly set their sights on US entities, Ukraine's dependence on foreign technology can pose big problems for the United States, according to Lin.
"For example, Ukraine doesn't have its own spy satellites, so where does it get its spy imagery? It gets it from commercial satellites," Lin said, with some of the companies behind those commercial satellites potentially located in the United States. "That's an obvious place you would expect Russian cyberattacks to be targeted. And that's just one example of what could be possible."
Should the conflict in Ukraine escalate further, Lin added, "all the stuff in the United States that directly helps the Ukrainian military machine... becomes fair game for the Russians to target."

A dark day for Europe, a black day for Ukraine. Also a very dangerous situation for the peace in general, that might escalate further. Where is this criminal going to stop. He doesn't seem very impressed by all harsh words from European governments and the consequences this is going to have also for the Russian people.
I do not wish to make comparisons to the devil in disguise that was AH in 1939 to 1945 but he like Putin appears to have, went past their prime and became unstable and this is my fear with Putin as he has had such a long leadership reign that I fear he believes he’s nothing left to lose . I hope I’m wrong . Those poor children who will be displaced and have their lives turned upside down and inside out.
WW3 is a definite possibility because as much as it would be easier not to get involved, we simply cannot do that and we must stop this tyranny because if he is allowed to conquer Ukraine through attack tantamount to war then who will be next as he won’t stop there. These are real people with real lives who deserve not to be bullied. It’s a desperate and sad situation. We are too close for comfort in our European countries aren’t we @Bit of hope
Prayers for peace ✌️

A big question for us in Europe, even us on the outskirts in the UK, is about the gas flow. It would punish Europe as much as Russia if the gas flows were cut or totally stopped.

PS I'm not trying to ignore the human horrors of this, just saying about the damage that Putin can cause on a wide scale.
Fortunately at @Amonet we are not solely reliant on Putins supply , in the U.K.
We get 60+% of our gas elsewhere so although it is not a good situation to be in, we still have options. What I am not sure about is how reliant our European neighbours are on Putins gas reserves and pipes ?

Kyiv furious as EU wavers on banning Russia from Swift payment system

(...)

Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, voiced his anger as EU heads of state and government appeared likely to decide against blocking Russia from an international payments system through which it receives foreign currency.

With casualties mounting, Kuleba warned that European and US politicians would have “blood on their hands” if they failed to impose the heaviest toll on Moscow by cutting Russia from the so-called Swift payments system.

“I will not be diplomatic on this,” he tweeted. “Everyone who now doubts whether Russia should be banned from Swift has to understand that the blood of innocent Ukrainian men, women and children will be on their hands too. BAN RUSSIA FROM SWIFT.”

Paywall...do they mention that Ukraine was starting to get friendly with China and some business ventures? Bet that had something to do with it. Then there's NATO...

What we are hearing on (Friday) morning TV in Australia .....

They are waiting for China to comment publicly, because China wont be happy. They have investments in Ukraine.

They are saying this could potentially pit both the US and China (the 2 biggest world powers) against Russia.

They are also saying that the Russian economy is not large. It has the 11th largest economy in the world. Australia is 13th (with 26M people), so that shows you how relatively small the Russian economy is versus their size.

And they are saying that Russia has now secured a railway line, so they can immediately transport injured troops out of Ukraine and back into Russia to be treated.

Poland has opened 8 border crossings, to try to help the fleeing Ukrainians. There are long, long lines at each border crossing. People in cars, and people walking with rolling suitcases.

Dear @Mo Thuairim

Excerpt from the article which you kindly shared with us.

(It is only my opinion that the following statement is wildly absurd considering who the "dialogue" would supposedly be with)

“Someone started a war and we want this war to stop here and now,” one EU diplomat explained of the caution over Swift. “You always need to have some doors open to be able to have a dialogue to stop a war.”
