Good to see the thread about it here.
It’s truly awful what is happening in Ukraine right now. It was pending for a while but I hoped that Putin will back off.
I have a few friends from Ukraine who are living and working here( Sweden) and are terrified for their families back home.
Putin has to be brought to justice for war crimes he has done, enough is enough. As of now I hope that people in Ukraine will stay strong.

pain. such pain they must feel.

I’m hoping strong sanctions are placed on Belarus today. Indefensible.

Bringing forward from media thread:
I had hoped to never see the horror of war return to Europe yet again.

I recommend listening to the Kenyan Ambassador's speech to the UN Security Council:

One comment from that Twitter link above...Russian tv just flippin the truth around.

"Watching Russian state TV you'd think Ukraine is invading the Russia-backed separatist republics. "There's a cannonade...it's very hot...Thank God there are no strikes in the city & it's calm here"

Unfortunately, that is more of a geopolitical move than anything that will significantly affect supplies for Europe. As it says in the article, it's Japan making a statement of alignment with the G7, and that's really all it is.

The US, on the other hand, may well have spare LNG supplies that it can send to Europe. I don't know the details of quantities, but there was an article on the subject that I read a few days ago saying that the US could send LNG to Europe via the UK.

This is a lot like Rambo, imo: “You drew first blood”.

Like I said earlier there’s no coming back from this. The horse has been let out of the gate, or however that saying goes.

CNN showing subway systems full of people, children, pets trying to get away from the bombing. What will happen next? No one knows.

People have cars, but they don't know where to go. They're surrounded.

I imagine the damage has been already been significant, and these reports will continue to trickle out throughout the day, jmo.

I believe US has already promised Germany some natural gas because the brand spanking new billions costing pipeline/spigot from the Russians yo Germans is not getting turned on...by the Germans.

I suppose any help Japan or anyone else can give in the energy crisis this madman is creating will help greatly.

Explosions rattle Ukraine after Russia launches invasion | CBC News
''In a televised declaration of war in the early hours, Putin said he had ordered "a special military operation" to protect people, including Russian citizens, subjected to "genocide" in Ukraine — an accusation the West calls absurd propaganda.''
Russian forces invaded Ukraine by land, air and sea on Thursday, with Russian missiles raining down on Ukrainian cities and reports of troops pouring across the border.

Explosions could be heard before dawn in the capital of Kyiv. Gunfire rattled, sirens blared across the city and the highway out became choked with traffic as residents tried to flee.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's aim was to destroy his state.

"Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Twitter.

"This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin. The time to act is now."

Ukraine reported columns of troops moving across its borders into the eastern Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions, and landing by sea at the port cities of Odesa and Mariupol in the south.

European Union foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said: "These are among the darkest hours of Europe since the Second World War."

Yeah Putin is saying he's doing this for the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. Ukraine's president said...His grandfather fought with Russia against the Nazis, two of his grandfather's brothers died in extermination camps...they and he are Jewish. Putin has lost his mind, like a rabid animal he needs to be put down, AJMO

Vladimir Putin’s long obsession with Ukraine

Analysts say Putin has long been obsessed with returning Kyiv to Moscow’s fold in the name of Russia’s greatness.

(...)

Born into a working-class Saint Petersburg family, Putin said in 2015, “If a fight is inevitable, you must strike first.”

One of his teachers, Vera Gurevich, has said that when a 14-year-old Putin broke one of his classmate’s legs, the future president said some “only understand force”.

He has repeatedly called into question the idea of distinct Ukrainian identity and statehood.

Putin claims that two Ukrainian revolutions – in 2005 and 2014 – that drove out pro-Russia elites were the result of a Western plot.

As far back as 2008, according to Russian and US media, Putin told his then US counterpart George W Bush that “Ukraine is not even a country”.
