Pray it doesn't happen.

Last post for a while.

Neville Chamberlain tried diplomacy and appeasement. These ideas are worthless in the face of war mongering despots.

European friends, all civilians, please prepare

I don't know how people can prepare, to be honest.

Potential future/continued cyber attacks are a big part of this equation too, imo.

The 2018 US election had substantial hacking and manipulation of voting by Russian operatives

Numerous cyberhacking events in the US associated with utilities, medical facilities, media and the internet are associated with Russia.

Banking, finance issues, aviation, civil defense and organizations that maintain water supplies, power supplies, transit, etc are all vulnerable from cyberhacking.

Putin has successfully penetrated US informatics and internet and will not hesitate to do more if he needs to.

This is not just Ukraine. This is not just Europe. This is US, right here and right now.

"Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces "are trying to seize" the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

"Our defenders are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated," Zelenskyy said in a post on his official Twitter account Thursday. "This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe."

Russia-Ukraine updates: Russia claims it neutralized Ukraine military infrastructure

I'm concerned about this and also concerned that this isn't being more widely discussed.
We're going to learn a lot in this (horrible) thread. :(

I don't know how people can prepare, to be honest.

Much depends on one's proximity to the fighting. Close by countries, expect disruptions of fuel, food, medicine, etc. Expect power disruptions.

If possible, prepare for escape to safer ground.

All civilians everywhere should have supplies of food, water, and medicine.

Expect movement of civilians out of Ukraine and in to neighboring nations.

Prepare for nuclear fallout. Find and/or build protective bunkers.

Are all these Russian soldiers just bots now? They MUST have concerns as to why they were directed into the Exclusion Zone!? All I keep hearing in my head today is Sting's song "Russians"..."I hope the Russians love their children too"

Correct. It's a NATO problem regardless of location.

Geography fact of the day: There are only 55 miles between Russia and Alaska USA
(only 2.5 miles if you measure between the islands of Big Diomede and Little Diomede)

This psychopathic, sociopathic, narcissistic nutcase is a danger to us all.

Already a massive humanitarian problem...this poor people.....

Europe is preparing for refugee flow from Ukraine

Europe is preparing for a flood of refugees from Ukraine. Neighboring countries such as Poland, Moldova, Slovakia and Romania are prepared to receive tens of thousands of displaced persons.

It is difficult to estimate how many Ukrainians will leave their country after the Russian invasion. In any case, it is clear that thousands of residents have left the capital Kiev. Peter Wijninga, defense specialist at the Hague Center for Strategic Studies (HCSS) suspects that most of them are being accommodated in Ukraine itself for the time being.

Poland
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said earlier this week that one to five million Ukrainians would be displaced as a result of a Russian invasion. The Pentagon expects some to flee to Poland, to continue west from there. US soldiers help set up camps in Poland on the border with Ukraine.

The German government is ready to assist Poland and other countries bordering Ukraine in case many Ukrainians flee there. This promise has been made by Secretary of the Interior Nancy Faeser. The prime minister of Slovakia pledged on Thursday to help Ukrainian refugees and Romania already said on Tuesday that it is preparing for the arrival of half a million people from Ukraine.

Minister Faeser did not comment on admitting Ukrainians to the Federal Republic. During the Syrian civil war, then-Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the borders to refugees from that country in 2015. Hundreds of thousands of people from Syria and other countries came there. In 2015, 890,000 people applied for asylum in Germany. It has led to heated debates in Germany about taking in large numbers of refugees.

Moldavia
Another neighboring country, Moldova, announced today that it is declaring a state of emergency over the Russian invasion. The country is ready to host tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said. Moldova, like Ukraine, is a former Soviet republic. The country also, like Ukraine, has a renegade pro-Russian region. This is Transnistria. That region, about the size of Noord-Holland, is in fact virtually independent, but is not recognized by anyone. Transnistria borders Ukraine. An unknown number of Russian military personnel are stationed in the region, much to the dismay of the government of Moldova.

Hungary
Hungary is moving troops to the border with Ukraine as it braces for a possible influx of refugees fleeing conflict with Russia, Hungary's defense ministry said. The number of troops involved has not yet been announced. The border between Ukraine and Hungary, which is a member of the EU and NATO, is about 140 kilometers long. Hungarian Defense Minister Tibor Benkö said his country will provide humanitarian aid to refugees.

UN agency Unicef is scaling up emergency aid in Ukraine and, among other things, bringing clean drinking water to the conflict areas. Care providers also provide assistance to children who have suffered trauma. The aid organization fears that tens of thousands of families will have to flee. UNICEF is deeply concerned about the fate of the country's 7.5 million children and calls for an immediate ceasefire. The organization says essential water infrastructure and educational facilities in the country have been damaged by the violence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has once again called on Dutch people in Ukraine to leave the country 'if it is safe to do so'. Compatriots have to arrange their evacuation themselves, the Dutch government itself does not take any action to remove people. The ministry points out that there is a support center in Lviv, where emergency aid can be given to Dutch people. A contact center is available 24 hours a day.

Refugees to the Netherlands
If Ukrainians fleeing the violence of war come to the Netherlands, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) will have to quickly create new reception locations. All reception centers for refugees are currently full, a COA spokeswoman said when asked.

"If people from Ukraine come to the Netherlands, we will do our utmost to accommodate them," she adds. “We cannot do this alone, we need others to do this.” Municipalities in particular play an important role in this.

“We have always succeeded so far,” emphasizes the spokeswoman. That required a lot of art and flying work lately. COA set up new emergency shelter locations in Enschede, Leeuwarden and Goes. In addition, asylum seekers are temporarily accommodated on boats in various places. In this way we managed to cope with the influx 'in the nick of time'.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said earlier in the day that the Netherlands will "monitor the flow of refugees very precisely". Citizens of Ukraine can stay here for up to 90 days without a visa. If they want or need to stay longer in the Netherlands, they can apply for asylum.

While I thought it, Mr. Bit said...if needed we can house two refugees.
