Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is holding a press conference on the invasion. He says Russia does not recognize Ukraine's leadership as democratic.

At the same time, Lavrov believes that there are no plans to occupy Ukraine, but that Russia wants to demilitarize the country.

"Russia will not allow neo-Nazis to rule Ukraine," Lavrov said.

He also says that Russia is ready to hold talks with Ukraine - if Ukraine's military forces stop defending themselves, reports AFP.”

I think it means...we already did a lot...there isn't much time to organize....amounts of soldiers and logistics.

Germany is hitting 1.53% of GDP when it comes to defence spend – below the NATO guideline.

Luxembourg was at the bottom of the list with a GDP spend of 0.57%, now the only nation estimated to be below 1%, while Belgium (1.12%) and Spain (1.02%) also lie in the bottom three.

NATO: Which countries pay their share on defence?

This is completely insane...stops defending themselves....this is framing, propaganda what Putin does all the time to get himself a motive to attack..There is no genocide, there is no threat...can't say anything about neo-nazis...they are everywhere...but I looked and listened to the Ukrainian president for a long time...especially the last month and he seems upright, legit, sincere....

Exactly! It’s propaganda. Russia want people to think that they have a reason for this attack. They attacked Ukraine unprovoked . People know the truth so he can say what he wants but the truth is impossible to hide .

Well, we all know it's about money..the government has to make choices...a little bit to this, a lot to this..etc. The Netherlands are scaling down for years on military forces..in favor of other important problems to be tackled. Besides that we feel to be protected by agreements between allies and keeping the peace. And this happens and we are not ready for it. It takes a lot of time to organize....we are so to late.....I'm very annoyed there were no scenarios or plans made before this escalation...it wasn't that hard to see this was going to happen....

When these spokespeople come out and say these bizarre statements, I wish every newspaper in the free world would call them on it, <modsnip>

What happens next? More strategic operations like airports, financial centres, infrastructure that allows people to leave the country? Has anyone heard about an emergency NATO meeting?

I doubt Russia cares about the outflow of refugees from Ukraine to its neighbours. That's good for Russia as it puts stresses and strains on those other countries that are receiving refugees.

Blinken says Putin has set his sights BEYOND Ukraine as Russian artillery is seen massing on Polish border with Belarus: Claims he's 'convinced' Kremlin wants regime change Kyiv

Anthony Blinken: 'Is it a possibility that Putin goes beyond Ukraine? Sure it's a possibility' | Daily Mail Online

I have many friends from Poland and my colleague is polish. According to them people are panicking there scared of what Russia might do next. Luckily many NATO troops are there. Let’s hope that Putin will not dare to touch any other country otherwise we would see WWIII and that would be disastrous.

Fighting reaches Kyiv suburbs as Russian invasion of Ukraine intensifies

Fighting has reached the northern suburbs of Kyiv after a night of missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital to prepare for a major Russian assault, as president Volodymyr Zelenskiy pleaded for more international help and tougher sanctions.

(...)

Pre-dawn blasts in Kyiv set off a second day of violence after Putin on Thursday defied western warnings to unleash the biggest attack on a European state since the second world war. It has so far claimed at least 150 lives and displaced more than 100,000.

(...)

Witnesses said loud explosions could also be heard in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-biggest city, close to Russia’s border, while air raid sirens sounded over Lviv in the west. A resident told the Guardian the eastern city of Sumy had been taken

In the Ukrainian village of Starognativka near the frontline where separatists have faced off against Kyiv’s forces for years, a local official, Volodymyr Veselkin, said missiles had been raining down all morning and the power was out. “They are trying to wipe the village off the face of the earth,” he said.

(...)

Zelenskiy said in a televised address early on Friday that Putin was targeting civilian as well as military sites. “They say that civilian objects are not a target for them. It is a lie; they do not distinguish in which areas to operate,” he said, vowing to continue defending his country.

The president, who also criticised world leaders for “watching from afar”, spoke after large explosions were heard in the capital, and after a warning from the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, that “all evidence suggests that Russia intends to encircle and threaten” the city. Zelenskiy has vowed to stay in the capital.

The UK defence secretary, Ben Wallace, has said it is the view of British intelligence that Russia intends to invade the whole of Ukraine, but that its army failed to deliver on the first day of its invasion.

The international criminal court said on Friday it might investigate possible war crimes, though did not provide any further details. Putin says Ukraine is an illegitimate state carved out of Russia, although his ultimate aims remain obscure.

Blinken told a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on Thursday that the US believed Moscow had “developed plans to inflict widespread human rights abuses – and potentially worse – on the Ukrainian people”.
