I see your point, but how would this work? Should soldiers be shipped secretly to Ukraine, dress up in Ukrainian military clothing and fight with them? Foreign Legion? It has happened before. Just thinking out loud......

There are many covert retired military groups. We read about several helping civilians escape in Afghanistan, after the US pulled out. The group's are privately funded, have no goverment protection, and highly successful.

I found this article eye opening, detailed and a little long, worthy of a read. Explains the government thru private contractors provide undercover services, outside the bounds of government control and international laws.

Exclusive: Inside the military's secret army, the largest undercover force ever
The largest undercover force the world has ever known is the one created by the Pentagon over the past decade. Some 60,000 people now belong to this secret army, many working under masked identities and in low profile, all part of a broad program called "signature reduction." The force, more than ten times the size of the clandestine elements of the CIA, carries out domestic and foreign assignments, both in military uniforms and under civilian cover, in real life and online, sometimes hiding in private businesses and consultancies, some of them household name companies.

He’s been threatening EVERYONE with consequences. At this point it’s like who is he not threatening...

China!

Eta:

It’s going to be wild watching what all happens going forward, with the coordinated response.

Reflection: It is really is a thin line when it comes to offensive and defensive, in these types of situations.

Very interesting...Let's go! I hope they get involved. Maybe they already are. It's a secret army...so we will not know.....maybe in a far away future.

No. My grandparents were Russian and my grandfather deserted from the Russian (Soviet) army. I have relatives there.
They "abhor media-banning and censorship" as much as anyone else.
This is not their war.
They can say nothing, and it's not "just another day."

My ancestors are from Eastern Europe as well, although no close relatives still remain there.

This is a sad time for them, and I hope it ends very soon with minimal casualties.

Freedom of the Press (and the people) is a western construct. The Ukrainian media outlets have suffered under censorship for a long time. Putin is known for censoring media and citizens.

My point is that we westerners cannot comprehend the status quo in the Eastern Bloc because it's anathema to us. But, those living there have suffered under it for decades.

We should be supportive of all people who are suppressed. We should advocate for their freedom to express themselves.

And, we should protect the freedoms we have now to ensure we continue to have them.

As far a I understood it's a secret army; no names...no tags...so no foreign nations 'officially' involved. That of course would be devastating in the context of it all. I have made a lot of posts up thread about preventing a WWIII and explaining how this would appear. We can not intervene under a nation flag. I hope you read back and understand where "I'm coming from".

I have no idea what kind of Russian products to boycott. Any ideas are welcome.

Forbes Magazine has a list of ways to contribute charitably:

13 Ways To Help The People Of Ukraine Right Now

I have been thinking about this too, though not from the boycott perspective as I don't think that is very relevant to most of our countries.

I think the biggest things to consider are those exports from Russia...oil, gas, wheat, corn, sunflower oil. The only way I can see this is a war effort to bring prices down on those products, but it would have to be a global effort. So, more farmers planting those things, more people in all countries reducing use of those things, even by a tiny amount per person. So anything we do to reduce our own energy usage is going to help. Things like planting a vegetable garden will help. These things are also good for us as individuals and nations.

Recycling is important. I think some aluminium comes from Russia, so just make sure your cans go into the recycling bin instead of general rubbish. It also costs less energy to recycle things like aluminium and glass, so we're helping our own countries, and the war effort, by doing things like recycling these items.

As Japan has come to the allied side, I am pleased that I had already added Japanese-made rechargeable batteries to my wish list. Most batteries seem to be made in China, and we can't really boycott China, but by buying these Japanese batteries I can in a small way say that I'm grateful to Japan for its stance and support. (Brand is Panasonic Eneloop, they are basically the best you can get, so they seemed a good investment to me even before all of this kicked off.)

Canadian companies at risk from Russia cyberattacks in retaliation from sanctions | CP24.com
''TORONTO - Canadian businesses are at risk of being targeted for online attacks if Russia chooses to retaliate against government sanctions, a cybersecurity expert said Friday.

Karim Hijazi, founder and CEO of Texas-based cyberintelligence firm Prevailion, said that Canadian companies could be victims of bad actors trying to compromise critical infrastructure and government entities.''

''Hijazi also noted that malware Russia would activate is already in Canada.
“They've already installed the plumbing they need to do the damage,” he said.
A spokesperson from the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) said in an email that the federal government agency is watching for cyberthreats directed at financial, energy and telecommunications sectors.''

Ireland news host calls out Russian ambassador as 'apologist for slaughter' in Ukraine

Russian ambassador called 'apologist for slaughter' in Ukraine by news host

….

Maryland usa here.

♀️ From across the pond.

This is ridicule! Bye bye Mr. Yury Filatov, start packing....

Remember this is older news.

The ambassador responded that he didn't think the Russian government was misleading anyone.

McCullagh then pointed to a statement the ambassador had made just 10 days earlier, saying claims of a Russian invasion against Ukraine were ludicrous.

"We do not have any plans to invade anybody, least of all Ukraine," Filatov said.

Hi Maryland! Never been there...maybe some day.

Russia to restrict Facebook access for 'censoring' its media | Toronto Sun
''Moscow has also increased pressure on domestic media, threatening to block reports that contain what it describes as “false information” regarding its military operation in Ukraine, where Russian missiles were pounding Kyiv and families cowered in shelters.

The state communications regulator said Facebook had ignored its demands to lift restrictions on four Russian media outlets on its platform – RIA news agency, the Defence Ministry’s Zvezda TV, and websites gazeta.ru and lenta.ru.

Meta’s head of global affairs, Nick Clegg, said in a statement on Twitter: “Yesterday, Russian authorities ordered us to stop the independent fact-checking and labeling of content posted to Facebook by four Russian state-owned media organizations. We refused. As a result, they have announced they will be restricting the use of our services.”

Day three and Ukraine still stands, had to be many behind the scene, secret operations, training and lots of fire power supplied by "someone, somewhere".
Moo...

Orban said Hungary will support all EU sanctions on Russia

Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orbán has said it will support all EU sanctions against Russia and will not block any.

Speaking on the Ukraine-Hungary border, he said he supported peace efforts.

“Hungary made clear that we support all the sanctions, so we will block nothing, so what the prime ministers of the European Union are able to agree, we accept it and we support it,” he told reporters in English, according to Reuters.

Earlier on Saturday he said he agreed with Russia being blocked from the cross-border Swift payments system. Orbán has previously been considered Vladimir’s closest ally inside European Union member states’ leaders.

Poland’s prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki said all sanctions should be up for discussion, ahead of a meeting with German chancellor Olaf Sholz.

“I came to Berlin to shake the conscience of Germany so that they would finally decide on truly harsh sanctions that will influence the Kremlin’s decisions,” Morawiecki said as fighting took place on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

“We need to shut down Nord Stream 1 and 2, we need to cut reliance on raw materials, cut off Russian financial institutions from capital markets, confiscate assets of oligarchs, close off SWIFT for Russia ... all options should be on the table.”
