Yea it is very strange. It sounds like he knew what to expect so I am confused why he would not have at least taken a light jacket.

Im kind of wondering if maybe he did take something like a sweater and nobody realized he had one buried in his suitcase.

Unless someone saw him walking out the door with a T-shirt then they really cant be sure what he was wearing.

Im going to lean towards him getting lost or an animal attack like a bear.

Unless he rubbed someone the wrong way I just cant see this as any sort of foul play just yet.

They said he liked to hike at night and it was night.

Its so easy to get lost in the backwoods even if experienced hiker.

Another thing that could have happened is him hurting his leg real bad where he couldn't walk out. That is one reason why hiking alone in the woods is not advisable. If he was far away from the cabin and he fell and broke a leg real bad then he may have been in a tough terrain area where he could not crawl back on hands and knees.

So many things could go wrong hiking in remote woods by oneself. These are some of the things that can go wrong that I can think of right off the top of my head

-break leg or twist ankle real bad and you are so far away that you cant crawl back.

-Fall and hit head and go unconciounce. Wake up hours later and weather changes to get cold

-animal attack. Siberia does have bears I believe.

-getting totally lost and cant find way back

-Fall and cut yourself on a sharp rock and bleed to death

-Sharp Tree Branch in the eye and now you cant hardly see to find your way back. Walking in woods at night it is easy to get a stick in the eye.
Been there/done that and luckily not severe

Just not good to go by yourself because if anything goes wrong there is nobody to assist you.

30th March 2016 at 14:25: Author – Victoria Gamanova - 1024 views

To recap, the 24-year-old US Citizen disappeared in the resort village of Arshan in the Tunkinsky Region during the night of the 26th - 27th of March.

He has always been interested in mountains, forests and the outdoors. On his social media pages, there are many photographs from various hiking trips and tours.

The exchange student from the higher college in Irkutsk has been in Russia four years already, and this was his fourth time in the Tunkinsky Region. He was hoping, along with friends, to master the “Peak of Love.” But several hours before the hike was due to begin, and while the rest of the group was still asleep, the young man disappeared.

He walked out of the guesthouse into the cold without any protective clothing, with no mobile telephone and wandered off in an unknown direction. Those acquainted with the young man do not understand – why did he walk out of the house? He didn’t suffer from sleepwalking, and there were no signs of any psychological problems

Natalia, a friend of Colin Madsen- “Everything was going well for him – everything was fine.

Correspondent: “So, that evening, perhaps, they’d had something to drink?”

Natalia –“The guys tell me, that no, they didn’t. They were going to climb the “Peak of Love” the next day, so they were responsible, went to bed earlier, and were planning to get up early the next morning.

The searches for the American are continuing for the third day. The operation is under the direct control of The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (МИД России) and the Russian Investigative Committee.

Dmitri Stolyarov: Senior assistant to the director of the Investigative Division of the Russian Investigative Committee of Buryatia (СУ СК России по Бурятии):”At the present time and according to he given facts, the necessary investigative steps are being taken in order to shed light on all of the events surrounding the student’s disappearance. Aside from that, investigators are coordinating the work of search parties, in which there are colleagues from The Ministry of Emergency Situations (МЧС), the Ministry of Internal Affairs – Buryatia, as well as volunteers from Irkutsk, and local residents.

As it turns out, The Ministry of Emergency Situations concluded its work yesterday. Searches conducted throughout the entire day had yielded no result.

Nazilya Sattarova – Public Relations Specialist for the Republican Agency for Citizens’ Defense, and Emergency Situations: “At 10:45 am, three rescuers set out on The Peak of Love. They examined the area for the entire day, but in spite of their efforts, the missing person was not found. They returned, and further searches are going to be coordinated by the police.

The police are yet to reveal their version of the young man’s disappearance

Last night the student’s mother flew into Buryatia from the state of Missouri, USA. At the same time, volunteer groups are being formed in Arshan in order to search for Colin.

You may remember that there was a similar event last year. A tourist from Moscow, also planning to climb the Peak of Love, went missing. His body was found three days later. He had fallen down the mountainside.

He didn't walk away in a T-shirt and pants in sub-zero temps. He has been in Russia for 4 years and to this place a few times, he knows what to wear outside and why. And he knows to not hike alone and he knows the very real dangers of wild animals. He isn't stupid and wasn't drunk.

Spirits didn't kill him.

What I don't understand is why do any of them assumed he "walked" out of the lodge at all. Everyone was sleeping. They woke up and he was gone. That doesn't tell me he walked anywhere. Only that he disappeared. Is the toilet in a separate building? Does he smoke cigarettes? Was he too excited to sleep so he went outside? I just don't get the assumption that he took off wearing only a tee-shirt. Do they have CCTV? Did someone see him?

I am wondering about that too. Unless someone saw him leave then they really don't know for 100 percent sure what he was wearing. Someone could have loaned him a jacket that nobody knew about.

It just doesn't make a lot of sense to be so confident about what he was wearing unless there is an eye witness.

Im still leaning towards him getting lost especially after hearing about that happening to others.
Thanks everyone for all the new articles and updates about this case.

One other thing that could have happened is he got up early because he could not sleep and was anticipating the big hike the next morning and he ventured a little too far away from the lodge and got lost that way.

He may have not intended on walking all the way to the peak just yet. He may have been just trying to blow time till everyone woke up and got lost as he ventrued too far away.

It really doesn't take much to get all turned around when out in the woods. It doesn't even matter if you have been to a place before if it is real wooded then things look different the next time you go because of how the growth changes and colors of growth changes each year.
I suppose we have to wait till more news surfaces and hope they keep looking for him. Giving up should not be an option.

Sounds like they don't believe the friends story.

I'm sorry but there is absolutely no way in the world that he left his guest house with just a T-shirt on at 3:00 in the morning in the middle of Siberia in late March to go for a "night hike". Just does not add up. I've lived in Russia (all over) and no matter where in the country one is, Russians tend to be extremely sensitive about wearing proper dress in the wintry months, snow or not. It's been drilled in to every young child's head for eternity to protect yourself from the cold or you will die, basically. They are very careful about stay warm. Go xinto any flat and the heaters are cranked up to desert temperatures, sometimes stifling so. My point is that from the moment he first arrived in Russia, he learned to dress responsibly (if he didn't already beforehand), even if it was to deter all the stares and every babushkiy passerby "tut-tuttering" him in the street. That, and he is not a dunce and it is downright freezing cold there! to the point your will legs ache and burn within short time if not one isn't wearing the right clothing.

So, based on all this I do not believe for a second he would leave without taking a parka or something more than a t-shirt, unless he did NOT leave of his own volition or had no choice or time to retrieve something warmer ....
If no one saw him leave, how can anyone say this for sure?

Also, about walking around at 3am -
To do so is simply unusual in these parts of Russia in the Winter/Spring time at such an odd hour, like completely, unless one's drunk.

Something about this whole given "scenario" smells really bad. Someone is lying or not telling the full story.

Knowing how nosy some can be (especially so of ~suspicious 'amerikanets'), and how close-quartered their dwellings are, somebody has to have seen or heard him leave, or at least noticed some sort of disturbance or slight disruption!
That's just how it is over there...they notice any and every abnormality astutely ... someone always knows more than they let on, if at all.

It is all just not adding up and is feeling to me like foul play is probably involved as I just don't buy the flatmates story / theory.

IMHO.

I do agree it doesn't sound right at all.

You could be right that somebody may be lying.

I find it interesting how every picture we see of him he has on a nice coat.
Maybe they need to grill the person who claimed he had on only a T-shirt.

Well this changes everything for me.
Investigators also think something is not right.

I would love to know what the "other established facts" are that they are referring to. They may know much more than we do by now.

"'These and other established facts indicate that a crime may have been committed against him. "

It's how I felt from minute one. I'm relieved they aren't buying the "walked off" story.

US Student Missing in Siberia Found Dead

Colin Madsen’s body was found by rescuers about a mile from the village where he had disappeared in the Buryatia region, investigators said in a statement released by the local branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee, the equivalent of the FBI.

Russian police had earlier opened a possible murder enquiry into Madsen's vanishing in the foothills of the Sayan mountains, roughly 3,000 miles from Moscow, where a search for the student has been gradually intensifying since last Monday.

But today’s statement said that there were no signs of outward injury on Madsen’s body or any indication he had been robbed. Investigators said a cause of death has not yet been established but the statement suggested that it may be related to drugs.

Police are now testing Madsen’s body for traces of narcotics and the statement noted that the group with which Madsen had been travelling had taken drugs in the day before his disappearance.

Police today said that the murder enquiry remained open while the full circumstances around Madsen’s death were established.
