Investigators have only said that his body had no visible signs of injury and his wallet and ID documents had not been stolen.

The group of friends -- two Americans and two Russians -- "had used a drug" the day before Madsen disappeared.
The group had not drunk alcohol together and had not quarreled.

Re BBM

Sad to hear about his death but glad they found him though. The articles news about drugs may explain why things sounded so strange about this story. The toxicology reports will probably hold some answers.

Any guesses as to what drug may have been involved? I have never taken any drugs that made me want to get out and about in freezing temperatures. But we hear about cases where people using meth become paranoid and try to flee, so I guess it can have that effect on some people .

There are a few posters who've stated they are familiar with Russian culture. How easy is it to get drugs there?

Doesn't have to be paranoia level. He could have just smoked pot and thought it looked like a lovely night for a walk. Drugs tend to hit people differently and if he wasn't habitually a user his tolerance might have been lower.

Very sad whichever way it was, but much the outcome I expected. RIP Colin.

My guess is mushrooms or LSD or some other psychoactive drug like Spice. These are long lasting, vary from person to person on strength, and can make you pretty immune to temperature (especially LSD). Spice is epidemic in Russia, is easy to get, and makes you completely bonkers - it could definitely make someone think taking a midnight stroll in subzero temps is a good idea or will make them feel better.

[No] details of the terrain where he was found other than to say Madsen had “gone into the woods.”

...investigators determined the group had used unspecified drugs on the day before Madsen’s disappearance.

“Colin, to my knowledge, did not do drugs,” his aunt told The Associated Press by telephone. “I’m taken aback by this.”

I've personally witnessed a young family member on Spice. It's awful. He did crazy stuff like sleep in the trunk of his car and other irrational things. Thankfully, he went to rehab and is clean now.

Rest in Peace, Colin.

Was expecting this but it's still very sad when a young person loses their life.
I might have missed it, but did the article say what Colin was wearing when he was found ; and was it the same clothing his friends said he was wearing ?

Not sure if there was foul play, but if he collapsed and died while still in the building with the others --and they were afraid to call for help because they were on some 'substance' -- why would they carry him a mile away and leave him ?
It would appear as of now , he just walked away.... The autopsy should shed some light as to his physical condition , and not to be too morbid, but wouldn't the cold preserve any evidence of what was in his blood ?

Sorry for his family and loved ones. :(
Rest in peace, Colin !

The grieving mother of a U.S. student whose body was found in Siberia has accused local authorities of a cover-up over his death.

Dana Madsen Calcutt believes her son Colin Madsen was likely killed, and that suggestions he walked out of a guesthouse into freezing temperatures wearing only a T-shirt were "hurtful."

~~

In a Facebook post Wednesday, she said: "It is very hurtful to his family. He did not go out in a T-shirt, it was a long sleeve thermal shirt. There is no substantiation that he went or told anyone he was going outside for a walk."

She noted that the guesthouse's bathrooms were outside "in an outhouse," adding: "If Colin did any drugs (which we don't know) he would have smoked marijuana and that was hours before this event occurred. There was no alcohol involved."

Madsen Calcutt wrote: "He was familiar with this place that he loved to hike, spoke fluent Russian, and had his pack, water and food ready for the climb. Those things were left at the cabin. He was found a mile away, one day after the Russian FBI came."

~~

"The murder investigation is still open and I hate to even think it, but I believe barring some medical catastrophe like an aneurysm or pulmonary embolus, that it is likely," Madsen's mother wrote. "He would have never walked to a place in the pitch dark with his shoes unlaced, no socks, and when he was leaving for a climb in just a few hours that he was so excited about."

The mom did admit to him smoking pot possibly. But I have to agree with her, if they were doing a difficult hike or climb in the morning they wouldn't have done hard drugs. Perhaps his pot was laced? It was interesting to read that the outhouse was indeed outside. I really think something was in the weed and they went to bed. Perhaps he got up to go to the bathroom and whatever he was on was still very much in his system and he became disoriented then lost.

Is this a region known for specific drugs, including hallucinogens?

But wouldn't the other guys he was smoking with be experiencing similar effects?

I don't think it had to be laced; people do react differently to drugs. His mother could easily be right. Colin didn't do drugs, or didn't habitually do them, and whatever he took was stronger than he was accustomed to, or new to him. It didn't even need to affect him "adversely" compared to the others, he was just the unlucky one who went out to answer the call of nature. Fresh air can sometimes enhance the feeling of intoxication, too.

Since Russian authorities are saying that they used some sort of drug, I presume the others who were with him told them what kind of drug it was. Different people react differently to drugs. So it wouldn't necessarily affect all of them the same way.

'Forensic experts confirmed that the US citizen died because of the low temperature, that is he froze to death,' said a statement. 'He left the village without any warm clothes and there were freezing temperatures at night'...

Friends of the dead US citizen, from Jefferson City, Missouri, who was a student at Irkutsk State Linguistic University, now face criminal charges over possession and use of cannabis, which is banned in Russia...

A friend familiar with the case... stated that the Russians did not admit to investigators that Madsen had smoked cannabis because they did not know whether he did or not... The source made clear that Madsen's Russian friends 'do not believe... that he just froze to death.'
