The family of Emmanuel Quarles has been waiting nearly 9 years for his killer to face justice. Quarles, 26, went missing in 2015 and his body was found buried in a shallow grave in Oconee County in 2023.
Kerry Cobb, 57, who was charged with murder in Quarles’ death, is pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter on Thursday morning.
The hearing was postponed at the request of the victim’s family while the coroner worked to officially confirm the bones were that of Quarles.
“He should never be able to walk the earth,” Pamela Quarles, Emmanuel’s mother, told the judge Thursday.
A recess was called during the emotional hearing after the grieving mother said she needed air. When court returned, Emmanuel’s sister, Priscilla, spoke.
“We don’t never get over it,” said Priscilla Quarles, who was also visibly distraught. “We just pray to God.”
The Quarles family has still not been able to plan a funeral because they said they have not been informed of his remains being turned over to a mortuary.
Cobb was sentenced to 15 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and given credit for the five years he has spent in jail since his arrest. He will be behind bars for an additional 10 years.
