GUILTY SC - Five Jones children, ages 1-8, Lexington County, 28 Aug 2014 *Father Arrested*

  • #641
I'm still trying to figure out how saying they are better off in heaven, means he didn't know right from wrong.... I mean he can believe that and still know killing them is wrong.

Holy crap.... 2 verdict watches next week in old cases with multiple murder victims. Wow.

Yea, I didn’t get her argument for that. She seemed to be saying that just because he chose to kill them, because that would be against legal and moral laws, he is not responsible. But it seems you could say that about any crime. If someone in Walmart shoplifts a shirt, does the fact that they made that decision, that defies legal and moral laws, mean they were insane and not responsible? Her criteria seemed very superficial.

This is so unbelievably awful. That wail is something I have heard before and it’s a sound you never ever forget.
I just watched Mom on the stand. God bless her and everyone that has ever went through that loss and pain.
That was heartbreaking to watch. I cant even...

Timothy Jones Jr. trial | testimony in trial of man accused of killing his children.

The defense sure did round up some highly qualified (on paper) psych experts. And, those experts seem to genuinely believe their own opinions as to Jones' sanity at the time he killed his children.

I'm guessing, though, that most jurors got as dizzy as I did from listening to all the circular reasoning presented by these experts. Greatly simplified, their collective argument largely relies upon the killer's word & seems to be: he didn't know what he was doing was morally/legally wrong because he was in a manic/psychotic/paranoid state, and we know he was in a manic/psychotic/paranoid state because he says he was so when he killed his children.

Dr. Frierson's opinion rings true to me because it is straightforward, fits into the general narrative of who this defendant is, and seems common sensical.

However & why ever he first killed, he freely chose to kill all 4 of his other children & babies, and being who he is, afterwards created a narrative (s) to portray himself as victim & savior.

To paraphrase Dr. Frierson: "he felt morally justified" in killing them. Of course he did. He specialized in cloaking his need for control & his narcissism with the finery of moral justifications.

And I agree with the doc that Jones no doubt prefers to believe his non-existent schizophrenia "made him do it." Sure beats acknowledging the alternative.

(An aside, about that "suicide" attempt of his. Nearly an hour of adjusting the sheet around his neck? And better, never actually lifting either foot from the ground that whole time? He probably was cursing the guards nonstop for not rushing in to "save" him).

Back in the Lexington County Courthouse for Day 14 of the Timothy Jones Jr. murder trial. The defense rested Friday, prosecution will call witnesses as part of its reply, starting around 8:45.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3h3 hours ago
When court gets underway at 8:45a, the prosecution will offer a redirect, before both sides present closing arguments. Then, the judge will charge the jury. Stay tuned to find out when deliberations could begin. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 2h2 hours ago
In it's final redirect, the prosecution calls a neuropsychologist, Dr. Kimberly Cruz, to testify. She assisted the court-appointed psychiatrist in performing evaluations of Tim Jones. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 2h2 hours ago
The prosecution calls a clinical neuropsychologist to the stand. Dr. Richard Frierson (who testified Thursday) first referred her to do an evaluation on Jones.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 2h2 hours ago
Dr. Cruz, a Clinical Neuro Psychologist, is the witness the prosecution called in reply. She says #TimothyJones did not meet the criteria for a neurocognitive disorder @wachfox #TimothyJonesTrial

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 2h2 hours ago
The neuropsychologist, Dr. Kimberly Cruz, explains the different types of tests, including a dot-counting memory test, she performed on Jones. Earlier, she said she provides data to back up Dr. Frierson's clinical opinion.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 2h2 hours ago
Dr. Cruz says Jones does have a depressed skull fracture, but it does not equate to a neuro-cognitive disorder.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 2h2 hours ago
Dr. Cruz continues to say Jones does not have symptoms consistent with schizophrenia, saying it's possible he might have faked symptoms (aka malingering) for psychosis.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 2h2 hours ago
Dr. Cruz says #TimothyJones has symptoms not consistent with schizophrenia @wachfox #TimothyJonesTrial

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 2h2 hours ago
Dr. Cruz testifies based on testing, it suggests Jones was malingering (faking, exaggerating) when self-reporting his alleged symptoms of psychosis. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 2h2 hours ago
Dr. Cruz: Based on multiple tests, Jones did not meet criteria for a neurocognitive disorder, meaning he does not have a "broken brain." @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 1h1 hour ago
Dr. Cruz continues to reiterate her data, saying that the tests show Jones had neither schizo-affective disorder nor schizophrenia.
Judge Griffith sends the jury out for a quick break.

Casey Secor, of the defense, begins his cross-examination. Judge Griffith calls the two sides to the bench.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 58m58 minutes ago
Secor is asking Dr. Cruz questions about the scoring for the personality tests and how that data from Jones's tests was collected and analyzed.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 22m22 minutes ago
The last witness of the #TimothyJonesTrial steps down. Dr. Kimberly Cruz was on the stand for almost two hours as the prosecution and defense argued over her analysis and data #TimothyJones @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 23m23 minutes ago
Dr. Cruz steps down from the stand. The State rests in its reply to the defense.
Judge Griffith calls for a 15-minute break.

Closing arguments are about to get in. Each side has around 15 minutes @wachfox #TimothyJones #TimothyJonesTrial

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 16m16 minutes ago
Solicitor Rick Hubbard starts his closing statement with a similar sentiment to Deputy Solicitor Shawn Graham's opening statement: "a child should be a safe in a father's arms."

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 18m18 minutes ago
Solicitor Hubbard started, "A child should feel safe in their father's arms." #TimothyJonesTrial #TimothyJones

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 18m18 minutes ago
Solicitor Rick Hubbard reminds jury of Jones' comments to investigators during his interview with Jones, "part of me says I'm their father and a father should never hurt his children, the other part of me says f*** it, they're already dead." @wis10

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 11m11 minutes ago
Hubbard refers to a defense witness as "that $25,000" guy, pointing out the doctor that say #TimothyJones was schizophrenic was a paid witness by the defense @wachfox #TimothyJonesTrial

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 10m10 minutes ago
Hubbard continues bringing up some experts the defense called up to the stand, including Dr. Shawn Agharkar (who he refers to as "The $25,000 Doctor"), who said that Jones had schizophrenia.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 7m7 minutes ago
Hubbard talks about the testimony from experts he and his team brought up to the stand, reiterating that Jones "does not have schizophrenia."

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 7m7 minutes ago
Hubbard is discrediting the testimony of Dr. Wood, the chief psychiatrist for SCDOC, by saying she gives the inmates drugs when they complain, etc #TimothyJonesTrial #TimothyJones @wachfox

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 3m3 minutes ago
Solicitor tells jury all of the defense's experts relied on findings of a doctor who did not appear in court to testify. Further, he says her findings were "invalid" because she tested Jones while he was heavily medicated. @wis10

  • #652
I think Dr. Cruz just cut through all the crud and shone a spotlight on what’s important.

  • #653
Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 23m23 minutes ago
Hubbard says the experts who testified on behalf of the defense relied on test performed on Jones by one doctor who did not testify, saying those results were "invalid" since Jones was heavily medicated. He also argues a brain injury did not affect Jones's rise at Intel.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 22m22 minutes ago
Hubbard says tests performed by Dr. Cruz on Jones's neuro-cognitive functions showed that his brain was fine, and he says Jones had no problems passing those tests.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 20m20 minutes ago
Hubbard argues Jones has been malingering and has tried to pretend he has schizophrenia. He continues by calling Jones "not a reliable historian."

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 18m18 minutes ago
Hubbard compares the testimony of Dr. Frierson (court-appointed psychiatrist) and Dr. Rand-Dorney (who was hired by the defense). He asks the jury whose testimony "made the most sense."
Frierson testified Jones knew legal and moral right from wrong on the night of the murders.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 19m19 minutes ago
Hubbard, "There's no schizophrenia, there's no schizoaffective disorder... he's trying to make himself look schizophrenic." #TimothyJones #TimothyJonesTrial @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 14m14 minutes ago
Hubbard shows the jury the note allegedly showing Jones's plan to burn the bodies and flee to the Mexican border, arguing that Jones was planning to destroy evidence.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 12m12 minutes ago
Hubbard says Jones made "a conscious decision" to kill the other four children after he found Nahtahn dead.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 11m11 minutes ago
Hubbard, "in all his panic, he had this" and shows the jury #TimothyJones passport. He also reminds the jury of the notes Jones wrote himself and "Mexican Border." #TimothyJonesTrial @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 9m9 minutes ago
Hubbard brings up the safety plan created by DSS to prevent Jones from abusing his children. He argues that DSS "put him on notice" and that Jones knew legal right from wrong since he was abusing Nahtahn after playing with the electrical outlets.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 9m9 minutes ago
Hubbard, "Voluntary consumption of drugs is not a defense." #TimothyJones #TimothyJonesTrial @wachfox

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 6m6 minutes ago
Hubbard, "Of all the things DSS missed in this case, they put him on notice" referring to the safety plans the agency had Jones sign. He was not supposed to physically punish the children, etc #TimothyJones @wachfox #TimothyJonesTrial

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 6m6 minutes ago
Hubbard says Jones was "thinking about himself", continuing by saying "if you had any doubt he was sane, he answered that himself." By not calling 9-1-1, Hubbard says Jones "told all of you" that he knew legal right from wrong that night.

Hubbard says "no child suffered more than Nahtahn", saying on the night of the murders, Jones was relentless in making his son go through an intense workout if the six-year-old didn't tell him the truth about the outlets.
