Investigators say they have little to go on in the investigation of a decomposed body found in the Congaree River in Calhoun County. A fisherman found the lower torso and upper legs of a human body Monday about five miles upstream from the U.S. 601 bridge, said John Evans, spokesman for the state Natural Resources Department "No head, no hands, no clothes. There's just nothing there," Evans said. "The only hope is that someone will come forward with somebody whose been missing for two months." There was no indication of the race, gender, or age of the body, said Calhoun County Coroner Hoyt Shuler. Shuler said Tuesday that the unidentified remains will be transported from the morgue at The Regional Medical Center to Charleston for the autopsy to determine the race, gender, or age, as well as a possible cause of death. The remains will be sent to the Medical University of South Carolina, Shuler said. Forensic pathologist Dr. Sandra Conradi will conduct the examination.

Additional tests on human remains found in the Congaree River in Calhoun County will have to take place in order to determine more information about an identity. Calhoun County Coroner Hoyt Shuler said Wednesday that preliminary results of an autopsy conducted by Dr. Sandra Conradi were only able to determine that the gender of the body was male. A fisherman found the lower torso and upper legs of the body Monday about five miles upstream from the U.S. 601 bridge, said John Evan, spokesman for the state Natural Resources department. With little to use, Shuler said the additional tests will try to determine the race or age, as well as possible cause of death. The body was transported from the morgue at The Regional Medical Center to MUSC for the autopsy. Shuler said no timetable was given as to when the final results will be released.
