The sheriff also said Friday that duct tape with Swainson's hair on it was found in a junk yard near Grant's home in Elgin. Officers said earlier this week that they had been actively searching that area for clues.

According to the sheriff, signals received from Swainson's cell phone showed that her phone traveled from her home to Grant's residence the morning she was reported missing.

His assault charge came in July 2006. According to an Elgin police report, Grant picked up a PVC pipe and hit a 32-year-old woman. She ran to a neighbor to call for help but later refused to press charges and the case was dropped.

A March report from that year says officers found Laster crying as she lay on the ground. It said Grant "grabbed her by the hair and slammed her face into the side of his mother's house and drug her to the car."

The report says they fought on the way home from with Grant "pouring some sort of fuel on her" in the car.

It went on the say Grant slammed Laster's head into a brick wall. Police found and photographed various cuts, bruises and other injuries on her body.

Somewhere around the time the girl went missing and the first few days of the search, there is a time when Grant’s location can’t be accounted for, Lott said.

At some point, Grant was married to the aunt of Donna Hudson, now a neighbor of Grant.

Hudson said she joked that Grant was responsible for Gabbiee’s disappearance long before he was a suspect.

But in her motion filed Thursday at the Richland County courthouse, she asked a judge to prohibit “extra-judicial statements.” She said 136 news articles on the Swainson case can be found online and she is gathering those stories to build her case for the gag order. She also said she was collecting comments posted by the public on those online news stories.

“They are the best reflection of the prejudice the Defendant is suffering by the continued dissemination of information in direct conflict with these rules of professional conduct,” Pringle wrote.

But Lott said he was not concerned with any suffering on Grant’s behalf.

“What I would like to say is ‘I’m really broke up about his suffering,’ but I won’t,” Lott said. “What I will say is Gabbiee may be suffering somewhere out there.”

The search for 15-year-old Gabrielle Swainson continued this weekend, nearly two weeks after authorities believe she was snatched from her Columbia, SC, home in her pajamas, clutching her cellphone. Suspect Freddie Grant, 52, Elgin, SC, remains in custody without bond on kidnapping and weapons charges.

Gabrielle is the daughter of OOIDA Member Alvin Thompson, who lives in Virginia.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott told the media in a press conference that Grant is accused of forcibly taking Gabrielle in the early-morning hours of Aug. 18.

Lott said DNA and cellphone records place Gabrielle at Grant’s home immediately following her disappearance and there is “clear evidence of foul play.”

We just wanted to talk to him. That was part of people we were asking, trying to get information. The very first thing out of his mouth was ‘I’m not talking. Talk to my attorney.’”

"I never knew a yard man," she said. "He was never introduced to me as a yard man. When I got there before 7 a.m. Monday morning Freddie Grant was there."

The "Midlands" refer to the middle counties in SC. Richland (Columbia) Lexington, Sumter, Hershaw, Fairfield and others. It's a region. The "Lowcountry" is the lower part, beach area.... there are others.

If this is true, I find it hard to believe he wasn't someone of significance in Mom's life. More than just "a guy who does odd jobs".
