Deputies seek public’s help in locating 3 missing people

Barkley was last seen on Aug. 31 in Andrews and Georgetown. Authorities found his vehicle in the water near Chavis Landing off Sirfield Road in the Sampit Community.

Body has finally been identified as Harry's. Two people have been arrested and charged.

In May of 2020, human remains were found in a remote wooded area of Williamsburg County.

Though investigators believed the remains were Barkley’s, it took until August 25, 2021 for DNA evidence to confirm the identity; it was a match.

Over the course of the investigation, investigators identified suspects in Barkley’s disappearance. Upon confirmation that the remains were Barkley’s, warrants were issued for Eric Wade Hempel (21) and Shelby Francis Makaley Ashby (21), both of Georgetown.

Hempel was located in Tennessee following a high-speed police chase. He is awaiting extradition back to South Carolina on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Ashby is being charged with accessory to murder after the fact for assisting with moving and disposing Barkley’s remains.

A report with video footage as officer's make their move to end the high-speed chase involving Hempel. I bet I can correctly guess what he was throwing out of his window.

A Georgetown man accepted the sentencing for his involvement in the 2020 murder of a missing man but did not admit his guilt.

Eric Hempel entered an Alford Plea in Georgetown County court on Thursday to accessory after the fact of murder, which means he is not accepting guilt but acknowledges that the state has enough evidence to get a conviction if the case were to go to trial.

Hempel now faces 10 years in prison with his time already served, 1,036 days, removed from that sentencing.
