I should note that the property southeast of the pin is where Jessica was last seen leaving.

Wow can you even imagine searching for so long and they’re found so close? This one doesn’t feel like suicide to me so what the heII happened here? Who put her there or hurt her there? Moo

If memory serves me correctly, around the time she disappeared, it had been extremely hot here in SC. I believe it was said she was severely asthmatic and left without her inhaler. I remember being concerned at the time about the heat coupled with her asthma. So, IMO it's possible no one else was involved. MOOing here in case my memory of facts is faulty.

I wondered about this too. What if she was running from someone, couldn’t catch her breathe, dropped to the ground and unable to call for help?

‘“She didn’t make it 500 feet,” Angel Ashmore said.

And it’s a road Angel Ashmore said she has driven down every single day since Jessica went missing.’

[…]

The crew made the grim discovery in a remote area, more than 2 miles off Jeffries Farm Road in the Upstate town of Jonesville, according to WHNS.

Sheriff David Taylor said the site is “in the middle of nowhere,” and the terrain forced investigators to cut a pathway toward the remains, the station reports.

[…]

But the sheriff’s office as of Tuesday said identifying the remains would take time, according to WSPA.

[…]

DNA tests were pending, and an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday, officials told WSPA.

As of Monday, both the cause and manner of death were unknown, WHNS reported.

Not the outcome her family was hoping for but at least they can move forward.

Just wanted to add a quote from the article you linked ... the case is still under investigation.

“The only thing this does for this case is put an identity on the remains. This case is still being actively investigated,” continued Taylor.

The case remains under investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office, the Union County Coroner’s Office, the South Law Enforcement Division, and FBI.

It’s January with less foliage than when she went missing in May. How difficult would it had been to get to that spot in the woods in May? JMO

What's difficult for a coroner team with a gurney might have been easy for a small woman raised in the terrain. Or someone could have cut through it in the spring and it grew back up over the summer. She probably didn't fall from the sky.

Remains identified as those of missing Upstate woman, sheriff says
Taylor said: "Throughout this investigation, we have been fortunate enough to reveal both circumstantial, as well as physical, evidence. We have called upon the assistance from specific and scientific professionals to assist in all aspects surrounding this case. ...

According to officials, the case continues to be actively investigated by the sheriff's and coroner's offices, SLED and the FBI.

Now we know about how far she was into the woods.
Family still looking for answers after missing woman found in Union Co. woods

Now, the sheriff’s office is considering the investigation to be criminally suspicious.

The reason, they say, is that they’ve learned a lot about Jessica Ashmore, and they know where she would and wouldn’t go.

“She would not go a mile and 3/10ths down in the woods,” Sheriff Taylor said. “She had asthma, she had allergies. She was a person who didn’t like to get her feet dirty.”

Just poking around some of the older cases and stumbled on this article with pics. It's eerie that one of Jessica's MP posters was on a fence post leading to the area where she was found. :(

Is snakebite a possibility?

Possible but highly unlikely. We have Copperheads in abundance, some rarely seen Timber Rattlesnakes and Corals. Fatal bites are not common.

This is local to me and I had no idea of this thread until a member alerted me to it after I mentioned this case in another discussion. I do know that the newly elected sheriff has several cold cases that he wants to get attention to. It’s terrible for such a small, rural place to have as many unsolved cases as we have.

Investigators in Union County asking for help in nine unsolved murder cases
"We have a responsibility in law enforcement, a moral obligation to bring everybody to justice," Powers said. "But, I believe the community has just as much of a moral responsibility to step forward when they know something."

Union County Sheriff Jeff Bailey said his office is trying to solve three murders and three suspicious deaths.

"Focus our resources on these to make sure we can get it taken care of and get some answers for the victims," Bailey said.

The victims of the unsolved Union County murders include Christopher Rhinehart (April 2015), Curtis Bomar (May 2020), and Jabbrie Brandon (May 2020). The suspicious death victims are Jessica Ashmore (May 2019), Kevin Ammons (January 2020), and Haley Thomason (February 2020).

"By not saying something, then it's just endangering the community that much more," Bailey said. "Help us get the people off the street, we'll stand behind you, we'll work with you."

Updates from the cases listed in article (if you're a nosy nancy like me):
The Suspicious Death of Haley Thomason: Former husband of Union Co. woman found dead in Feb. of 2020 charged with murder
The Shooting Deaths of Curtis Bomar and Jabbrie Brandon: Family, friends want justice after 2 killed at party in Union Co.

A man named Kenneth Therrell is an unsolved murder too, from Sept of 2016. The Thomason case was dropped according to local media but the murder is still listed in the jail report. Union county SC doesn’t do the best job of record keeping tho.
