SC SC - John, 47, & Elizabeth Calvert, 45, Hilton Head, 3 March 2008

you're right, what average person is going to know how to commit suicide by stabbing themselves in the thigh...or even want to do it that way? Just seems a very painful and bloody method of choice, that most folks wouldn't pick. And he had plenty of time to figure out a different way than that.

The Club Group released a statement Wednesday saying it has discovered financial irregularities in client accounts handled by former chief financial officer Dennis Gerwing, who died of an apparent suicide last week.
Minutes after the press release arrived, however, the president of the property management company, Mark King, tried to retract it, calling its contents "totally not factual." He said the statement was based only on a hypothetical conversation with his company's public relations firm, CNSG Hilton Head.
CNSG's main spokesman, Tom Gardo, took issue with King's version of how the press release was generated and distributed. Gardo said he believed the statement was accurate. (more at link)

Why would Sheriff Tanner refuse to say whether a knife was found in the locked bathroom with Gerwing?

This is hard to understand since from the beginning LE has expected the public to believe that the man stabbed himself to death? If that is what happened, of course you would find the knife in the locked bathroom with him!!

And yes, I also think it's doubtful that this 5ft.8in. accountant single handedly overtook the couple while they were watching TV on their yacht and disposed of their bodies in a landfill or anywhere else.

Just my humble opinion.

Maybe it's not exactly a "knife"?

When a case gets to this point, I start hoping that it isn't being handled by the Keystone Kops.

Ditto, thanks everyone for all the info/links and keeping everyone updated.

Here's a .pdf link to King's statement that he made prior to the audit being completed:

King, explaining later why he tried to retract the statement, said it was not meant to be released, and was only sent to The Island Packet due to a miscommunication.

Statement by Mark King of Club Group

"This is just not factually correct," he said of comments attributed to him in the release. It was drafted in anticipation of a full review now under way by a Baltimore-based accounting and crisis management firm, he said. Any statements about what the audit of The Club Group's books will reveal would be premature, King said.

I know there's a website out there Steve Huff uses to link pdf files in another form. Anyone remember the link?

Pretty strong statements by King to have to retract. What do we know about King?

Taxi, are you talking about a document converter? I used to have the link to a UDC Document converter, but I don't see it any longer. It may be under a freeware service. Also, the previous pdf link didn't work. Try this one.

What I don't get about King is, why did he make those statements pending an audit if he didn't already know somehow there is something major wrong with the books? IMO, retracted or not, King's statement are true.

This case is revealing the undercurrents slowly. But there is something there or we wouldn't have seen the press release. Someone has cooked the books and either King is trying to disavow worried about his business or there is more involvement.

Now I'm thinking that the company is probably more concerned with their liability than anything else! King's statement about "full restitution to any clients" is probably why it was retracted. That could be binding legally if they aren't careful. King would not have the authority to state that!

Maybe he was getting kickbacks from Gerwing?

They are still missing, and I hope the search is ongoing. :(

Personally I don't read too much into that statement. I think that since we are going into a Holiday weekend he did what many exec's do ..they write different statements for different outcomes. Then when the outcome is known they release the correct statement. They do this so the minute this auditing company hits media with their statement they have their own back up statement ready. This is very normal for large companies. I think that he is correct in that someone in the PR area inadverently left this out and someone sent it to the press rather then file it for when it was needed..if needed at all. I am almost sure there is another letter that states just the opposite.

JMHO

This case sounds like it was planned out well; it makes me wonder exactly how many people may be involved in this mess. It doesn't sounds like a suicide; if someone had a knife most likely they would attempt to slit their wrists as opposed to stab themselves in the chest and cut their inner thigh. Sounds like someone murdered Gerwing trying to make it look like he was the culprit and committed suicide.

Did he definitely cut his inner thigh AND stab himself in the chest?

That is one of the strangest suicide methods I have ever heard.

This case is baffling!

Police release details on suicide of missing SC couple associate

http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/575/story/394434.html

Police reports made public Wednesday morning say that Dennis Ray Gerwing lined a bathtub with a comforter and a pillow before killing himself with multiple stab wounds using a steak knife. He wrote two suicide notes, including one scrawled on a bedsheet.

Police are giving a press conference today to update the public.

Nothing like making sure you are comfortable while slashing at yourself.

Wow! That is the most bizarre method of suicide I have ever heard of to date. Stabbing yourself in a bathtub lined with a comforter and pillows? Something still does not ring true here. I think he was cohersed into this by someone else and maybe wasn't even conscious at the time the stabbing took place.

And suddenly I feel a mystery women is involved. The comforter, the pillows and multiple stab wounds seem more feminine in nature. Maybe she couldn't get the steak knife into his chest past his breast bones and knew the artery would bleed out before he came to. Just off the top of my head that's what came to me. I wonder if they did toxicology tests on him to see if he was drugged?

OMG, you are right!

It's hard to imagine a man thinking to make himself comfortable (comforter and pillows) before stabbing himself multiple times in the chest and thigh!

Could we be looking at this the wrong way? Maybe the couple who are missing are the perps. They had motive. They were the ones last seen with this person. If we turn the tables and see this man as a victim instead of the perp...

I don't think so. The Calverts had plenty going for them even if this guy was stealing some funds. It would only have taken a moment in time to get him arrested for fraud. She was an attorney, he was a very astute business person and they had plenty money to see this through plus they were well known in the community of Hilton Head.

So because the couple had a good reputation and tons of money means they could not have been overcome with rage and committed a violent act?
