I used to work in a group home for mentally challenged folks. We had one adult male in his late 20's who was a "runner." By that, I mean he would slip out of the house sometimes and end up a mile or two away from the home. He was well known to the local PD because we were instructed that anytime we noticed him gone, we were to call them. A BOLO would go out immediately and whatever patrol was in the general area would drive around looking for him. Once he was found in a big supermarket, another time when he was at the work center, he ended up in the woods behind it. I think the longest time he was missing was 6 or 8 hours but it was nearly always LE who found him.

My point is, since Johnny is not a resident of that city, it's possible that the local cops are just not 100% focused on trying to find him, as if he lived there and they knew him. They do work with LE in other cities and states, but it's hard to really search for a person if they're not familiar with him, his habits, his mannerisms, even his gait. Even though they have a general description of him, his appearance could have changed drastically. Even the way he normally walks may have changed... he's tired, he may be hungry, he is confused, disoriented... he is not going to look or act the same.
Some things to think about.
ITA
I have a runner or wanderer ,myself. He's not running away, just finding interesting things as he wanders along. He isn't afraid of the dark and doesn't understand danger.
That's why we have fenced in completely and four years ago got a service dog that can also track. The dog is awesome. My husband and I are the ones who have to practice tracking with him to keep our skills up :blushing:

But here's the thing about Johnny, his family trusted him to go to Family Kingdom by himself and to find his way back to his hotel by himself. He was given a room key ,so they believed he could return on his own , find his room and let himself in.

That was information I didn't know when I was comparing him to my son and others like him.
He can also call home ,knows his town's name ,can read and write,at least some and knows a bus to Atlanta will get him close to his home in Cartersville.

Nonni Brenda's granddaughter said she would see Johnny walking around their town .

Johnny wouldn't be considered a runner or wanderer if he is allowed to leave alone and can find his way back home.
As I told Steely Dan upon learning the new info ,I couldn't let my son go to the mailbox by himself.

Clearly,I was wrong ,initially ,about Johnny's developmental abilities.

Unfortunately ,I haven't been able to get any more info about Johnny's abilities.
I'm not even sure "autism-like " applies. He doesn't like to be touched or approached quickly ,so wouldn't a place like Family Kingdom be a nightmare for him? It would for the kids I know with Autism diagnosis.

Given that Johnny is trying to get to Atlanta ,and MB is full of people who are traveling,it's not too much of a stretch to think he may actually catch a ride.
While that has it's own risks ,I find it preferable to him wandering ,homeless and hungry ,in MB .

WOW Do I have an update...give me a minute to figure out where to start.

ok...Julie called me this morning, I went over there, spoke with her, Rev, Rubypop, and another sister Jacque (Pronounced Jackie).
Rev. and Ruby got home last night, nephew picked them from Downtown Atlanta bus station. There have been no more sightings or calls from Johnny. CUE is still at MB and doing a great job. At first of week, they had 1 dog, the one that had the 2 hits b4 at Denny's and Flea Market. By midweek, they brought in 2 more, but no more hits from any of them.
I asked if LE had told them not to talk to or work with search groups as WS. They all 3 agreed that LE had been extremely helpful, and are glad that anyone, including us, is helping. The said the officers would come to their room to see if they wanted anything, offered to take them to get food. Told them not to waste their money on taxis, to call them, let them be their taxi.
we discussed FB, and Julie is gonna set up a new one, using our suggestions. She is gonna go to the bank and set up a special accout for Johnny's missing person fund. I gave her a list of people in Ctsv to contact for help with publicity; Judge Benham, etc.
She is also gonna call Cartersville Police and get them to call GBI to have Johnny's name added to the state Missing persons list, and also added to Mattie's call (Maddie's) sp??
more to come

CUE had 10 people there and totl 3 dogs. CUE had 2 dogs out all night. there were 7 more people the family knew there. I asked her were her friends, churchs here helping. They said the are holding prayer vigils, giving donations, some helped searched. Bringing them food, helping take care of their business and house while they are gone.
Julie went by herself yesterday to the truck stops, and restaurants near there, put fliers out talked to people who worked there, and best of all talked to the truch drivers. She said she god a good feeling from the truchers, the all took fliers and said they would help pass the work about Johnny to all the truckers, and keep an eye out for him. She said the truck stops have a "mini clinic" and they took some fliers too, and said the would look for him.
Rev and Ruby gave another TV interview last Sat.
The most positive news for me, they said Johnny has had jobs b4, made his on deposits in his own bank account. Makes his own grocery list, does his own shopping. She said he walks all over Cartersville if he wants to go somewhere, or rides his bike. He took an old unusable bike, fixed it up to ride. They said that when Johnny left them, Julie was already at the restaurant waiting for the others, Rev and Ruby on their way there from their room, and were waiting for Jacque and Johnny to eat. Ruby could see Jacque and Johnny talking at a distance, the Jacque came on to the restaurant, and Johnny walked to the Amusement park. Johnny had $60 and id in his wallet, but took out only 20, and left the wallet in the room. In Cartersville, they live exactly across the street where we have a county fair, amusement park 1 wk out of the yr, and Johnny goes there by himself. Johnny is not on disability, but was evaluated when he was a child. He was in regular school and the let him graduate from HS> At one time schools here would just put slow learners through school, thinking they were helping them. I'm thinking that's what happened here.

That's great that the MBPD has been so good to them. You did a good job, Nonni Brenda! Did she say where CUE was going to be looking next--any direction?

Im worried that Johnny will try to call home...and no one will answer. That seems to be the pattern. Everytime NB calls Julie, she has to leave a message.

Julie has always answered when I've called , she just never followed up ,for whatever reason. She has her own home health company and I'm sure is very busy.
My biggest complaint, for lack of a better word, has been lack of info or misinformation, though it may not be intentional.

You really ARE a great interviewer, NB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lots of progress there!!

You really do ROCK :rocker:

Just what we needed to know!

Did they have any ideas on how Johnny might be handling this situation? We know he's tried to call home and asked a bus driver about Atlanta.

The biggest obstacles I see for him at this point are ,his lack of money ,his appearance ,since he's been "homeless" for over a month, and his speech impediment.

I'm liking Peekerfoo's idea of fliers directed at Johnny,I just don't know where to put them at this point .
If Johnny had some clear directions he could someone to help him.

So ......here we are again, what to do,what to do ? :waitasec:

Nonni Brenda,
would you be willing to take a package with Johnny's info to the CNN/HLN headquarters in Atlanta? If Rubypop and the Rev would go with you it would be even better.

This is a big story . Maybe a sketch artist would do a drawing of what Johnny might look like with longer hair and facial hair.
Once there is some National attention ,I believe it will garner even more attention across the networks.
All kinds of groups who work with the disabled might come forward with some help.

What do you think ? It's a lot to ask .

As far as the keycard Johnny had when the Georgetown LE picked him up, it did not have the name of the hotel on it, just a picture of a blue ocean. But Johnny knew he was staying at Seacrest, and probably said that. They weren't registered as Brown at the hotel.
She said LE there would get out on their days off and look for Johnny. Great LE. They would stop by constantly asking if they needed anything, bring food, etc.
I asked if Johnny had insurance, no. No disability, etc. Was in hosp once hurt foot, very young. His blood type us unknown.
They said he remembers their home number, but doesn't know their cells. They said Johnny is very frendly , and makes friends easily. He likes everyone, and everyone usually likes him when they meet him.
I asked them what they think is happening now that there have been on sightings lately and no calls. They all feel that Johnny has made friends with someone who is taking care of him, and maybe he is "making do" with what is coming his way. We talked about the fact that Johnny seems to be somewhat resourseful, and has become comfortable, for lack of a better word, with his situation and just biding his time until he sees a way back home. I do believe this is why Julie is not panicing.
oh and another odd thing: I mentioned that Julie had taken care of my mother about 4 yrs ago. Well I met the other sister today Jacque. she looked familiar. she asked if i knew Stephanie. That's my daughter who hasn't live in cartersville since she was 13. She said "Stephanie was the only white girl that came to my 12th birthday party! She remembered her well, I remember dropping Stephanie off at her house. She also saw my other daughter in the tag ofc inCobb co a yr ago, and they got re-acquainted. What a small world. So I am realizing there is a major plan in force here, and I am "meant" to be helping searching for Johnny!!! Talking to the family today has renewed my faith is helping this family. Just had to share that with a'll. I may have more notes to share. I'll look over them and add more later. Haven't had lunch, but just had to give you this update. Peace.

Also,
Tim Miller was on JVM discussing the disappearance of that girl who boarded her dog at a Vet's in her hometown (not where she was living) and disappeared.
Maybe, since TES has Johnny's info ,they would be willing to contact the media .

I can't say this enough ,this can have a happy ending ! That's rare . I've compared the attention Linnea Lomax was given to what Johnny has been given. Linnea Lomax was found ,dead ,yesterday or the day before.

Johnny can be found alive, and returned to his home.!

This is very good news! I hope the family is right about Johnny and he does find his way home. It sounds like he can get along somewhat better than we first heard. Still, how can one not panic? It also sounds like LE is doing a great job (I didn't get the impression that they were quite that helpful when I talked with Julie).

I wish we knew what direction to go in? Is she going to keep you updated from now on?

The truckers could be a big help, so that's also positive news!!

Thank you so much, Nonni.

My thank you button isn't working, but that isn't enough to say what I feel. You all are so great and I have been revived in the "faith" department. thanks for all the kind words. Slogan for the day:
NEVER GIVE UP. GO BACK AND MAKE THAT SECOND EFFORT. IT CAN REALLY BE THE DIFFERENCE.
Going to lunch now. Bye
