Yes,but Johnny's never ever been on his own ,from what I'm told. He can write some things and understand some things. I know that sounds vague.

Sorry I keep talking about my child ,,but it's the only way I know how to describe developmental disability so bear with me:

My son isn't on any particular age level. He is all over the board
.Nothing ,and I mean nothing ,came naturally to him.Every word he says that is appropriate is because he was TRAINED to say it and each one took years .

He answers any who ,what where question with "yeah".
He knows what certain things mean like school,car,music,etc.. Mostly things he likes and often accompanied by sign language.

Every year we have to retrain him to answer "how old are you" .Just when he starts to get it right he has another birthday! He doesn't understand the concept of age but he can be taught to answer the question.
If you ask" are you six" he will answer "yeah" : )

Now this is important .My son knows routines and any deviation from them upset him terribly .There's no way to explain that you just have to make a quick stop to get milk .He just knows we aren't doing what we are supposed to.I try not to go to that ugly place.

I think that's what happened to Johnny.
He had routines at home and the trip was such a deviation ,he left to go back to where he knew what was coming next ...home.
What comes next is really important to those who have limited understanding. It's the only way they feel really safe.

My son cannot write or color in lines, but he is being trained to. It's not fun or natural to him but if he can write his name and where he lives, like Johnny can,it could be important one day.

He can ride a bike with training wheels ,but he still wants to sit down to go down stairs.

He can get to his videos on his IPad and make the sound go slow or fast .He figured that out on his own,but he doesn't always understand what "shut the door " means.

I bet Johnny understands more than he can verbalize. My son can verbalize more than he can understand.

At an IEP meeting I was asked how many words he knew and I answered about 30. private speech therapist came later and I asked her what she thought and she said 500.
The difference is,my son can say the word when shown an object on a flash card ,but he doesn't know how to translate that over to real life situations.

You can't pigeon hole these guys into any age level . Some skills are better than others.
My gut tells me someone must be helping Johnny and just doesn't realize he's a missing person.
I pray he's safe.

That's an excellent description of a developmental delay, MissJames!

BTW, I would guess that both you and the SLP are correct about your son. If his expressive vocabulary is about 30 words, it would make sense that his receptive vocabulary might be around 500 words. We all understand more words than we actually use. You sound like a wonderful mom. :rocker:

Does anyone know if schools have started back there?

Truckers- does anyone recall some trucker group that can be contacted, that has an interest in the missing?

multi tasking, be back

questions for family- What are his favorite 'fast' foods?
Is he afraid of the dark? Would he tend to stay in lit areas?

ps, my 'family' up there I contacted- idjits, every last one of them

You should write a handbook . I wish I could rally my old used up brain cells to work like yours .Sure you don't want a vacay in Myrtle Beach this weekend?

Thank you for the beautiful explanation, Miss James.

I too hope that someone is helping him. At the very least he needs food, water and a place to rest and some shelter. I have wondered if there is a homeless enclave or community that might have taken him in.

Oh man, so what bbq restaurant? What MCDonalds? Is that where flyers should go?

BBQ House in Surfside and a McDonalds in Surfside. There's a video on pg one that has an interview with Johnny's mom and a waitress that tried to help him at BBQ House so BBQ House was a confirmed sighting . McDonalds more iffy ,but sure sounds like it was him.

Same with the info BELLYUP gave.
Talk about a hero . She has been working quietly ,but really important stuff !

Thanks :blushing: But really, I'm upset with myself that we didn't do more. I wish I had thought to realize it wasn't "the norm" and had sought to help him.

For those not familiar with this area ... there are a lot of options for "free food". Heck, just the trash cans on the beach would offer enough for one to easily sustain themselves.

My concern.... does Johnny like to swim? Would he go into the ocean???

Also, what is with some of the news sites reporting he was last seen with a white female?
I also don't see the news reporting that he was picked up by police ever and taken to a different location? (this concerns me ???)

okay just emailed superintendent, special ed director and transportation director at Horry County School district , asking them to let staff know about this, maybe bus drivers can keep an eye out and could they please forward the email to parents

That's what I was picturing. Not a shelter ,but maybe a tent city under a bridge type of community that have taken him under their wing.

I just processed that your avitar is Einstein. How appropriate : ) and thank you. What a great idea!
How about City and County workers that are outside ,like ground crews ,waterworks, etc. They travel around and are often working outside near main roads.

You were a visitor . There were people working in the area that should have known ,but no reason you would have known. You have done plenty and I thank you .

That was a quote from a MBP spokesperson .He was last seen Aug 5th at an ice cream parlor with a white female. Have not heard that before I saw a report last night. Sister never mentioned it.
I have the same concerns. There's something off .

I remember passing a St . Michael's Catholic Church in either Garden City or Surfside Beach. If I go back tomorrow I'll stop there but it wouldn't hurt to send something.
I had to get back yesterday to pick up my son from school ,but there were several places that I noted would be good places to drum up support.

I think if billboards were put up in strategic places ,Johnny would be home within 2 days. They would have to be descriptive about his vulnerabilities to catch the attention of those passing.

Call 888.550.6672 for Booking Fees

When you call keep asking for someone's supervisor until you get to someone who promises to contact him. That's the best you can do. Don't take no for an answer. Also, give this information to the family to have them try too.

Here's another way of contacting Cuba Gooding Jr. this way; http://www.grabow.biz/Speakers/Cuba-Gooding-Jr.htm
