The court records are extensive (this is just one county I looked at). If you just open up the criminal ones, among the burglary, grand larceny, etc, there are multiple drug charges and it's the "hard" stuff, not marijuana. I wonder if he was under the influence when he disappeared, fortunately, it's not overly cold in South Carolina but it's enough to be dangerous if one isn't dressed for overnight. https://publicindex.sccourts.org/Greenwood/PublicIndex/PISearch.aspx

Public Information Officer Josh Hood said investigators are speaking with witnesses as they come forward, but a lot of leads coming in have not panned out.

Investigators have interviewed the person who was last seen with Hughes. Hood said the man told them what happened and investigators followed up on what he told them.

Helicopters, drones and K-9s have been brought in to help locate Hughes. The next step, Hood said, is to conduct a grid search to see if they are able to locate any evidence that might lead them in the right direction.

The search for 28-year-old Kenneth Ray Hughes, of Greenwood County, continued Thursday morning with help from an organization that specializes in search and recovery of missing people and cold cases.

Michael Hubbard, owner of Loudwater Outfitters, first heard about Hughes’ case after his aunt contacted him.

Thursday marked 19 days of searching for Hughes. Volunteers and family scoured an area in Ware Shoals in hopes of finding some clue that might lead to him.

During the search, they focused on six different search areas.
Hubbard said they have attempted to set up an interview with the last person to see Hughes, but have been unsuccessful.

“We had it set up, he began getting wishy-washy. We went back and forth, he canceled, then said he wanted to do the interview again, reached back out and made some excuse,” he said.

He stressed that they’re not accusing anyone of doing anything, but simply want to find Hughes.

Doesn't sound good but hopefully they can find him. Also noting:

Multiple ground and water searches have been performed with cadaver dogs showing some interest in the water.

“Dogs were out working their way upstream because odor flows with the wind. We’re setting boats up in case K9 handlers want to go out and check out the islands in the river,” he said. ...

Shipes added they have covered many acres of land and were out searching late Wednesday night after receiving an anonymous tip. The tip didn’t lead to any new clues or answers, but Shipes said everything keeps coming back to one spot.

“At this time, we’re pretty zoned in on this area. We have a couple reasons that we cannot disclose at this time, but we’re going to put a boat in the water. We’ve got possibly 9-12 kayaks, the Department of Natural Resources is coming up the river. We’ve been running cadaver dogs and had places of interest. ...

Public Information Officer Josh Hood with the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that while there were no new updates, the man who was last seen with Hughes — and has been interviewed multiple times by authorities — submitted to a polygraph test. Hood said the test was inconclusive.

He said the sheriff’s office has spent countless hours trying to find Hughes.

“We will continue to work diligently in figuring out this incident. Often times the uninformed assume nothing is being done. This is incorrect and this office along with various resources will continue to take this case seriously,” he said.

In a dark church in Greenwood County, the family and friends of Kenneth Hughes came together to pray for a miracle.

Hughes was last seen off of Rush Road in Hodges, South Carolina, on Nov. 16. Since then, the family has dealt with the ups and downs of new leads and disappointment.

"I mean, we do get leads. Not every day but every so often and we get excited because we think we're going to find him. Then we hit a brick wall and then it's nothing. Then we get another lead and it's the same thing," Hughes' aunt, RC, said.

RC said Hughes' son is also taking it hard as he waits for his dad to come home.

"He's been asking when his daddy is coming to see him. He's been crying wanting to know if he is going to see him again. It's just sad. He doesn't understand, he's 6," RC said.
