Dillon police are asking for the public’s help to find a missing woman.

Kristin Joanne Stephens was last seen on May 27, and was reported missing on July 22, according to a post from the department, which announced Stephens’ disappearance on Friday.

Oh no! Dillon is my home town… I lived my first 25 years there and moved to Myrtle Beach (which is only an hour away) in 2005. Dillon is a small town but I don’t know Kristin. This doesn’t surprise me though, considering I’m a great deal older.

I wonder why she hasn’t been reported missing before now? They’ve given us next to nothing about her disappearance. Where was she last seen? Where was she headed? What time of day? Where had she been?

I hate this because Dillon has very few resources. It’s a very poor town with few job opportunities and sky high crime rates. My family was considered “rich” by Dillon standards and both of my parents were school teachers — in a district so poor and dismal that President Obama paid them a visit on the campaign trail and CNN called it “the corridor of shame”. That should tell you something.

My point being — the police department in Dillon is woefully underfunded and I worry this poor girl’s disappearance won’t get the time and attention it deserves. I just wish that something more could be done.

(PS. Dillon also borders Robeson County, North Carolina — which is another poor county with an incredibly high crime rate.)

She was arrested in Brunswick County in March of this year for possession of meth as well as carrying a concealed firearm (without the property permit, otherwise it wouldn't be listed as a charge).
