SC SC - Marjorie 'Gayle' McCaffrey, 36, West Ashley, 18 March 2012 *husband guilty*

I think an earlier article states that RG was hired to work at a cabin 5 hours away and had been commuting back and forth. So he probably knew the routes and hidey-holes pretty well and wanted evidence as far away as possible. Remember that getting caught speeding was not in his plan- he probably was going to say that he was home all night or something.

I am sure he did get back at 6:30. The oldest child is 10. Old enough that if she woke up without parents, she would call grandma and grandpa or 911. Also, he might have planned to be back earlier and realized coming home at 6:30 am, people would see his car coming back- most people are up getting ready and leaving for work around then. So he couldn't lie about the time too many witnesses. JMO

There are so many things that just don't add up with this story. First of all, if he wanted to get rid of the body, there is miles of wooded area a mile from the home in Charleston - he would not need to drive to the upstate to get rid of her. Also, the aunt & uncle who live at the address in Easley, which is actually a little place called "Dacusville" - said they have not seen him - so evidently that is not where he went Saturday night when he "says" he left. A friend said he had been working in Brevard NC and also talking to someone on the internet - could the person he's talking to possibly live in the upstate of South Carolina or western North Carolina - and that is where he went. The media says today that he has "lawyered up" and is not cooperating. I really hope they keep the children in protective custody. No one knows what these children have seen or heard. Her family seems to be standing behind the husband saying that he would never do anything, so if the children went to one of them - they may let him be around them, which would not be a good thing. I do beleive when you are personally involved in a tragic situation, it is hard for you to think clearly. One of the sister's said on a news interview yesterday, something like - "We are just not a family like that." I have a hard time understanding that, things like this happen to all kinds of people, families - just because you live a quiet, middle class life - doesn't mean something like this could not happen to you or a loved one.

I agree with you in thinking that something like this could happen to anyone. However, I think if you do live a quiet, calm, "normal" life you really are shocked when this happens and don't have the benefit of experience or outside perspective. From their view, they have known husband for 10 plus years, and (I am assuming) he has always had a son/brotherly demeanor, a good husband, worker and father, etc. I can't imagine how hard it would be to turn on a dime and believe a member of your family is capable of this. And more importantly, wrap your mind that your daughter/sister is just GONE, disappeared and likely in peril or dead.
Years ago, a family member was accused of committing a felony. Immediately, our first thoughts were, "Cousin COULDN"T have done that!" We were all nice, professional middle class people. No drinking, no drugs, no creditors, running from the law, DV etc. The idea that he was involved with something was out of left field. It took a few days to sink in that it could have been possible. So I see the thought that your SIL, BIL, Uncle being a murderer hard to process.

Maybe I am not as trusting as most people, and with all of the nonsense that goes on today - I don't know if anything would "shock" me. Also, we think we "know" people, but I beleive you never truly "know" anyone and what they would be capable of doing. I would be the sister saying..."I think he did it"...

By the way, Charleston County Sherriff's Department just had a press conference and said the focus of the investigation for the next couple of days would be at the home on Limestone. Also, they have a person of interest they were looking at and an arrest would be forthcoming. He said due to things they have learned in the past few days, people they have been working with and the Travelers Rest Police Department the house would be the focus of the investigation. Also, the vehicle the husband was driving is in their possession.

Walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck...it must be duck.

Don't get me wrong...I think you are totally correct :rocker: in how they should be reacting and what probably happened here. I just find it so interesting how people react differently than one would expect.

Why were the children home alone, per nurses article? Thought "dad" called 911 from home?

There is a timeline somewhere up thread, but basically he left home at 10:00 pm and returned the next morning at 6:30 am. He claims that his wife was home when he left that night and when he returned in the morning she had left, leaving the children at home alone. He called 911 much later that day.

Speculation is that he left that night to dispose of her body and left the children alone (sleeping) returning early the next morning.

Seems kinda funny that a judge would give custody to her sister on the supposition that that they were home alone all night...article also says they were originally taken into protective custody because they were "found home alone." Sorry, can't cut and paste from kindle...

In an earlier article quoted upthread, IIRC LE interviewed the husband for a couple of hours and THEN took custody of the kids away. So I am assuming something was "off" to LE.

I sure know that something is "off" re: husband for the rest of us *MHO*

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has announced there is a person of interest in the case of missing woman Marjorie Gayle McCaffrey.

Officials have not released the name of the person of interest. They say Robert McCaffrey has not been ruled out, and neither has anyone else who was in contact with Gayle before her disappearance.

Clark said they will be spending the next couple of days scouring the home on Limestone Boulevard for more clues into Gayle McCaffrey's disappearance. He said there was no initial sign of a struggle, but they are still collecting evidence and speaking to people both in Charleston and in Travelers Rest near Easley where family members have a home.

"I cannot speculate on how soon we will make an arrest, but I do anticipate we will make an arrest," Clark said.

A bit O/T:

I really wish family law statutes would be changed and parents restricted any access to their child if they are even suspected of a violent crime until such time as the suspect is either exonerated or convicted.

I feel that way a lot (esp. with cases like Josh Powell) but I would hate to keep innocent people away from their kids for YEARS until they are exonerated. It might be different if people were tried and sentenced in a matter of months.

"Deputies started actively searching the house Thursday and plan to spend the night before resuming the search Friday morning.

"Wherever the investigation takes us, we will go," Clark said. "If we need to dig, we will dig. At some point though, we anticipate searching the area behind the house--in and around the house."

Was that some sort of flippant "in general" comment? Or do they think something happened in the back yard? Hmmm.
