The horror unfolded around 1am Sunday
at Willie's Bar and Grill in St. Helena Island,
about two hours from Charleston.

Hundreds gathered at the establishment,
known as 'a hub of warmth and friendship in the heart of our beloved community',
according to the restaurant's website.

Multiple victims and witnesses ran for their lives to nearby properties and businesses seeking shelter,

4 dead, at least 20 injured in mass shooting on St. Helena Island

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near the intersection of Highway 21 is partially closed Sunday as Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigate a shooting.

[11:37 a.m. UPDATE] A security guard hired for an event at the bar was one of those killed during a shooting early Sunday morning, according to those cleaning up the bar Sunday morning.

There was a party for alumni of Battery Creek High School at the bar. The bar’s owner had closed the venue back in December.
