A 67-year-old St. Helena Island man reported missing and endangered on Tuesday, said he was going to take a nap and didn’t plan to go anywhere before he disappeared on Sunday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

Michael Hatfield, who was reported missing and endangered by his family, was last seen at his Creek House Lane home on Sunday, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. He was last seen wearing a frog T-shirt, gray Nike sweat shorts and purple Puma sneakers, according to the Sheriff’s Office report.

The missing man allegedly said that he didn’t plan on going anywhere after having some lunch and taking his medication around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to the report. He has left home for days at a time in the past, but never without bringing his cell phone and cigarettes.

A nearby Dulamo Road resident reported hearing someone call for help in the woods around 7 p.m. on Sunday, but didn’t think anything of it until he saw the Sheriff’s Office alert about the missing man.

Words fail me. Why would you not go and see what the problem was?

I agree with the above of not doing anything when hearing someone call for help????:gaah: It says he has gone away before for days and returned. I wonder where he went during those times? Did he have a vehicle and of so where is that?

How absolutely stupid can a person be? Even if you don't want to go out to check because you might be afraid someone is just trying to lure someone into the woods, at least call the cops, just in case they really need help! Again, in today's day, I can understand folks being leary of helping strangers that may have evil intentions, but to be on the safe side, a quick phone call would resolved that problem quick without having to do anything.

Maj. Bob Bromage with the Sheriff’s Office said they are considering the possibility that the remains are related to the 2017 disappearance of 67-year-old

Hatfield was last seen on Nov. 26, 2017, at his home on Creek House Road, around a mile away from Dulamo and Tom Fripp roads, a previous report in The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette said. He was reported endangered and missing by his family, who said he had a medical condition. “A nearby Dulamo Road resident reported hearing someone call for help in the woods around 7 p.m. on [Nov. 26], but didn’t think anything of it until he saw the Sheriff’s Office alert about Hatfield’s disappearance,” the article said. “Deputies searched the wooded area between the two homes, but found no sign of Hatfield,” it said. Bromage said it is unknown whether criminal activity was involved in the death of the person whose remains were found. The remains are in the possession of the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Michael Hatfield, of St. Helena Island, was reported missing in November 2017 and was last seen at his home on Creek House Lane, the alert said. Hatfield told his family that he was going to take a nap after lunch and did not plan on going anywhere when he went missing, according to previous reporting by The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office, DNA analysts from the Sheriff’s Office Forensic Services Laboratory and a forensic anthropologist from the Charleston County Coroner’s Office in conjunction with the Medical University of South Carolina worked to identify the remains, Beaufort County Coroner David Ott said.
