Family of missing man believes cash prize led to foul play
Dozens gathered to pray on the lawn of Little Calvary Church on Monday night for the safety of 45-year-old Montey Thomas. The Richland County Sheriff's Department says Thomas went missing two Fridays ago and hasn't been seen since. “He would do anything you needed him to do,” Rodney Wade said. “He just was a loveable person. I mean, he'd give you the shirt off his back. He would do anything you needed.” Authorities say Thomas was last seen on Bluff Road at Rick's Party Shop. Wade, Thomas' cousin, believes the disappearance is highly suspicious.

“It's very suspicious, because he's a Carolina fan,” Wade said. “He would have never missed a game. He would never miss Thanksgiving. He called me every day.” Family members can only speculate, but they say he recently won $400 and that may have led to foul play. Now, Wade and nearly 100 other friends and family members are gathering to do whatever they can to do whatever they can. Investigators told the crowd that they've interviewed people of interest, but they have found no red flags. Authorities say surveillance video doesn't exist and there is no useful cell phone data so far. But they're continuing the search in air, on foot, and on horseback through thick woods nearby. Meanwhile, Friends of Thomas have also begun to collect money to help offer a bigger reward and hoping for a break...

It's been two years since a Columbia man has been seen or heard from and his family continues to plead for answers.

Montey Thomas was last seen at Rick's Party Shop on Bluff Road and is believed to have left with someone he knows.

While his family believes he's dead, they want to know what may have happened to him.

"We're hoping to find out what happened to him and to find out where he is so he can at least have a decent burial,” Dana Thomas, Montey’s sister said.

''Montey Thomas was last seen at Rick's Party Shop on Bluff Road on Nov. 21, 2014. Despite the efforts of his family and investigators, the case has gone cold.''

''For his sister, the search for answers is deeply personal.
"We know that he didn't get in a stranger's car; whatever car he got in, he knew him," Dana Thomas said. "We're just looking for answers and to find his remains so he can at least have a decent burial."
Despite the passage of time, Dana Thomas and the Richland County Sheriff's Department continue to work to close the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CRIME-SC.''

Thomas, circa 2014

  • Clothing/Jewelry Description A black hooded sweatshirt, white painter's pants or overalls, blue jeans, size 9 1/2 or 10 gray sneakers, and a blue knit Dallas Cowboys cap. Thomas is wearing the cap in one of the photos with this case summary.
<<Thomas was last seen at the now-defunct Rickenbacher's Bait and Tackle Party Shop in the 3000 block of Bluff Road in Columbia, South Carolina on November 20, 2014. His phone battery had died and he went to the business to use their phone. He called his mother multiple times, wanting a ride home, but he wasn't able to reach her and left the store alone on foot. He has never been heard from again.

It's extremely uncharacteristic of Thomas to be out of touch with his loved ones. He didn't have a vehicle at the time of his disappearance, and he never picked up his last paycheck. He was a self-employed painter at the time of his disappearance. Although authorities believe foul play is a possibility in his case, little evidence has surfaced as to his fate. His case remains unsolved.>>
