Dylann Roof trial judge found accused killer highly intelligent

"Dylann Roof is highly intelligent and objected to his defense team raising recent questions about his mental competency, according to a judge's newly unsealed order that allowed the accused Emanuel AME Church shooter to represent himself.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel wrote that he found Roof has an "extremely high IQ" and no cognitive impairment...

As jury selection continued for a third day Wednesday, Roof became more animated than he'd seemed earlier in the week. Still clad in a striped jail jumpsuit, he stood multiple times to request that the judge ask potential jurors follow-up questions.

For instance, one black female juror described coming from a family of clergymen. "The thought that something could have happened to them makes me sad," she wrote in her jury questionnaire.

Roof asked the judge to question her further to gauge "if it also made her angry." ..."

Church shooting defendant Dylann Roof eases into role as own lawyer (with clip)

"...Roof sat in the lead chair at the defence table, wearing a striped jail uniform but no handcuffs or shackles. He made no outbursts or personal statements and stuck to the matter at hand: selecting a fair and impartial jury to consider his trial, expected to open later this year.
Much of the time, he traded notes back and forth with David Bruck, a noted capital defender who was his primary lawyer until Monday....

At the hearing overnight, Roof participated more than the previous day, sometimes conferring with Mr Bruck and other lawyers but also consistently standing to address US District Judge Richard Gergel.

At one point, he suggested the judge explain to prospective jurors that the trial will have two phases, guilt and penalty, an idea with which the judge agreed.
At times, Roof objected to juror candidates, including one who answered differently on his questionnaire than he did in court....

Mr Bruck, staying on as a legal adviser, started by saying Roof had given him “general authorisation” to communicate with prosecutors on his behalf, particularly when it comes to emailing back and forth about court filings.

Jailed during his trial, Roof has no access to email, Mr Bruck noted, so he doesn’t have the ability either to receive the documents electronically or share them with his advisers.

Assistant US Attorney Jay Richardson pointed out that Roof was being kept sufficiently in the loop with paper copies of all filings, a detail with which the judge agreed..."

I wonder who taught him these things? Children normally learn what they live- what they see and hear . I'm not saying that this tragedy is the parent's fault- they didn't kill anyone. Anyone have info on his parents, Franklin Bennett Roof (father), Amelia "Amy" Cowles Roof (mother), Paige Mann (step-mother), and what kind of family life he had? I just want more info on his family life for my own infomation. Maybe info will come out in the mitigation?

He did not know or care about their value to the church, their families, or the good things they did every day -- things that made life better for individuals, for the community, and for God's world.
