I started watching the confession last night. WOW EY. His affect is so off. His rate of "response" to some questions is so peculiar IMO.

Its almost as if he wants to make sure he provides the info detailed.

Some times the replies practically knocked me over - just stragne.

S time goes on it appears as if they are almost shell shocked as well. It gets very bumpy as time goes by cause it so alarming - his affect, and word choice at times.

It was draining so I stopped half way through and will continue .

Just peculiar as heck.

Anybody ever fire a large caliber handgun? If you fire 70 to 80 rounds in rapid succession from a .45 your hand will likely get mighty sore and then swell up. They should have checked for this when they arrested Roof the next day, or at least asked him about it.

It's not just one anomaly, it's a whole slew of them.

I was surprised by this revelation. When story breaking I do not recall have the notion that the place was shot up, nor do I remember victims being shot a lot??

If accurate it almost seems as if he wanted to make a lot of noise, so LE would be out there when he opened the door so he could kill himself, while way in the back of his mind suicide by cop- like he basically knew he was ready to die but could not do it himself.

It seems kinda like noone being called really threw him off when he opened the door.

It's not just one anomaly, it's a whole slew of them.

Shooting a .45 caliber glock is nothing like shooting a desert eagle .50. Even though it's a high caliber, it's actually very easy on the hands. I own several glocks, including a G21G4, and have ran through hundreds of rounds in a day with no issue. In fact the only issue I hear about with it is usually from very large men with very large hands(which DR is not) who occasionally get what is called "glock bite" where the slide pinches the webbing between the thumb and finger when it's pulled back.

ETA: I'm a petite female and just want to add I have never shot handgun that caused issues with recoil or hand pain besides the desert eagle.

Who really is Dylann Roof? A portrait of a killer emerges

"...We learned that he loved Charleston and targeted Emanuel AME Church because of its history - but also because no white people would be there to get hurt.

We learned that he shopped at Walmart and Goodwill, that he sewed pro-apartheid flags onto a black jacket he bought there, and that he dropped out of high school, got a GED and once worked in lawn maintenance.

Two days before the shooting, he went to see the movie Jurassic World, alone, and still had the ticket stub in his pocket when police arrested him. He hung around his dad’s construction site before the shooting. He had no real hobbies, no best friend and regretted never falling in love. A loner...

He believed so fervently in his cause that he slaughtered innocents, but when asked if he wanted to be martyred answered merely, “Yeah, that would be nice. Sure.” And regarding a goal to bring attention to a cause, he responded: “I guess so.”..

Before prosecutors end their case, likely mid-next week, jurors will hear from Polly Sheppard, the other adult survivor in the room that night. Sheppard hid beneath a table praying out loud as Roof stepped toward her in heavy brown boots.

“Shut up!” he commanded her...

Before he left the fellowship hall, where bodies of the dead and dying lay sprawled, others curled up under tables, Roof said he planned to kill himself.
Yet, he didn’t...

... Roof will begin acting as his own attorney, a move that means he can decide what evidence to present. The penalty phase is a time when the defense can offer mitigating evidence – mental illness, history of abuse and state of mind, the types of details that can tell jurors more about a convicted killer.

Clashes between defense attorney, judge mark legal tension in Roof trial’s opening days (with clip)

The revelations in a federal courtroom last week were gruesome – difficult to hear and to watch.

But an underlying tension in the horrific hate crimes trial of Dylann Roof is the battle between two key players who started their careers in Columbia: defense attorney David Bruck and trial judge Richard Gergel. At stake? Nothing less than the life of Roof.

Bruck and Gergel are clashing over Bruck’s repeated motions and efforts to allow the jury to hear evidence about Roof’s mental state. Roof is charged with the June 2015 execution-style killings of nine African-Americans at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston...

On one occasion, Gergel appears to scoff at Bruck’s repeated efforts to get mental evidence before the jury by using a semi-legal term with its origins in the beer industry.
Granting one motion Bruck made “would be a back door to insanity lite,” Gergel told Bruck on Friday morning before the jury was brought in.

“Insanity lite” – a take off on low-alcohol-content beer – refers to a defense team efforts to place a defendant’s mental state before a jury without having to actually claim that defendant is insane...

Numerous laws and legal opinions support Gergel’s position about withholding mental condition evidence to a jury during the guilt-or-innocence phase of a death penalty trial.
Federal prosecutor and assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Richardson and other prosecutors insist Roof is a hardened criminal and want no mental health evidence to go the jury in the guilt-or-innocence phase.

“This is a case about a crime that occurred on one night, the planning and preparation that came into it, and what he did afterward,” Richardson told Gergel Friday in one dispute. Only evidence that directly goes to guilt or innocence should be admitted, Richardson said...

This sounds weird but I was pleased for lack of a better word that you too found it stressful.

I am having a hard time understanding why I was getting stressed - I spend many an hour with folks whose affect was "off".

It , at times, felt as if he was deciding between French or Italian dressing!

Just strange And on this end stressed/anxious were what I was feeling, as lets say opposed to mad, repulsed whatever.

Would love to see his handwriting - he is so peculiar.
At times I wondered if he even knew he was being recorded.

Another thing that struck me was he is totally willing to confess, starts out by saying I did it- elaborates in detail what he did and then when it comes to the drawing says I don't know if I should put my initials on this?/

Dylann Roof trial heads into new week of testimony

"...On Monday, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel also may address a defense motion filed late Sunday asking him to take several corrective measures regarding his decision to allow Sanders' testimony calling Roof "evil" and adding "there's no place on Earth for him except the pit of hell.”

Defense attorneys also want Gergel to publicly withdraw his comments from last week indicating that he thought lead defense attorney David Bruck elicited Sanders' words to provoke a mistrial.

The comments encourage future prosecution witnesses, who heard them spoken in court, "to replicate such testimony, and to treat cross-examination by defense counsel as a dishonest and cynical exercise in manipulation," the motion says.

Gergel's statements also "needlessly strained the already-fraught relationship between defense counsel and our client," the motion adds...

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Richardson, the lead prosecutor, said he expects to close the prosecution's case about mid-week. The defense team then gets its turn, although it remains unclear if they will call any witnesses given attorney Bruck has all but conceded Roof's guilt. Defense attorneys only occasionally cross-examined witnesses last week...

Roof will begin to act as his own attorney then and control what witnesses, if any, to call on his behalf. Earlier court filings suggest he doesn't want his defense attorneys to present mental health-related evidence..."
