Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church opened its doors for their weekly 9:30am service today
On Wednesday, nine members of the congregation were shot dead by Dylann Roof, 21, in a racially motivated hate crime
Among those killed was Reverend Clementa Pinckney, the church's pastor, and the bell tolled nine times in memory of each of the victims
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and her family attended services at the church as did Senator Tim Scott and Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr
'The only way for evil to triumph is for good people to sit down and do nothing,' said Reverend Goff during his sermon

Trayvon Martin's parents offer condolences and encourage the public to fight racism.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...536dc2-17a9-11e5-8457-4b431bf7ed4c_story.html

"In their statement, they said the country “must tackle the issue of racism head-on by holding individuals accountable for their murderous acts and not excuse their behavior by quickly labeling them as mentally ill in the media.”

They said to do so “does a terrible injustice to those who are truly mentally ill.”

They make a good point about labeling DR mentally ill. I have an uneasy feeling about this killer's trial. He'll likely get some high priced attorneys who will get him off with an insanity plea.

I just don't think so. If the manifesto is proven to be his, on top of the fact that he has admitted to the crime and explained why, no one would be able to convince a jury that he is insane, no matter how well they are paid to do so. As I said before, his defense will be for the purpose of avoiding the DP. James Holmes in my estimation is really nuts, but the insanity defense is not going to fly for him, either. JMO

Dylann Roof tried to kill himself during attack, victim's son says

http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-dylann-roof-suicide-attempt-20150620-story.html

"He pointed the gun at his head and pulled the trigger, but it went 'click,'" because the chamber was empty, said Kevin Singleton, the son of 59-year-old Myra Thompson.

“His plan was never to leave that church,” Singleton said.

Singleton said he and his family were told the story by Polly Sheppard, 69, one of two adult survivors of the massacre that left nine people dead.

This one is hard to believe. When the mag on a semi-automatic handgun has run out of bullets, the slide moves backwards and is locked into place. This also locks the trigger--it can't be moved at all until you load another mag and slam the bolt home. A semi-automatic does NOT go "click" when it runs out of bullets. Revolvers do this, but not semi-autos.

Plus, he could have accomplished THAT later, if he so desired....but he ran. JMO He is a vulnerable product of a sick culture. JMO

I predict he will offer to plead guilty and accept LWOP to avoid the DP. If that happens, I for one hope they take it. I'm not sure a jury will give the DP to someone that young, and it would save the familys a lot of suffering. When he goes to prison, I think he will kill himself.
My opinion only.

It is the prosecutor's decision on who gets to make a plea deal, not the defendant's. To the best of my knowledge, he can plead guilty to avoid a trial, but that doesn't mean the death penalty is off the table. I don't see the DA going for a plea deal here.

Emanuel AME Church reopens with remarkable display of faith, hope and unity

In a remarkable display of joy, sorrow and trust, worshippers at Emanuel AME Church on Sunday morning honored slain parishioners by celebrating the power of faith and community.

It was the first service in the church since authorities say Dylann Roof, 21, an avowed white supremacist, gunned down nine people gathered for Bible study on Wednesday, including Mother Emanuel’s lead pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney.

The service drew more than 1,000 people to the Calhoun Street sanctuary, though the building could accommodate only about 800. The street in front of the church, closed by police, became for the morning a sacred space where people enduring another hot day added their voices to the singing inside and joined hands in prayer in a grand show of solidarity.

When a woman sang “Jesus Said You Can Lean on Me,” joined by a young trumpet player and the church choir, the building shook. Worshippers clapped and danced and cried. It was hard to ignore the message: strength comes in numbers and healing begins in the cradle of community.

The first pew was occupied by Gov. Nikki Haley and her family, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and City Councilman William Dudley Gregorie, a member of Mother Emanuel, California Congresswoman Maxine Waters and others showing support for Mother Emanuel.

Pinckney’s seat on the alter was draped with a black robe. In the choir loft, the robe of Susie Jackson, an 87-year-old victim of the shooting, was laid in her usual seat.

This is a good article. Much more...

It is not unusual for a defense attorney to approach the prosecution to make a deal.

ADMIN NOTE: The focus of this discussion is the murders of nine innocent human beings, and one very misguided young man. Debating racial issues and political views is OFF TOPIC, and will not be allowed.

Mods will not hesitate to issue TO's to those posters who disrupt the thread by their persistence in feeding the debate.

I couldn't help but notice that this article mentions the heat. Even with the worship focused on faith, love, & a wonderful sermon, I couldn't help but notice all the fluttering fans trying to keep the heat at bay. I wish that someone would start a fund to provide air conditioning for the congregants. I know that I would certainly be willing to donate. Heat is especially hard on the elderly. I know this because I am elderly. Had I been there, they would probably have had to send an ambulance to take me to the hospital.

I really don't think there is much of a chance that a deal will be agreed upon. This little monster will get the death penalty, IMO.

We have been in a horrible heat wave for two weeks. Heat index in Charleston around 105 today and the humidity will almost suffocate you.

I would think that the biggest issue around providing air-conditioning would be the monthly cost to run it.

That is very likely, sad as it is.

Same here in New Orleans. It's that wonderful (NOT) time of year. Personally, I can say that there are not enough BTU's in the world to keep me cool in a crowded building on a typical summer's day.

Part of the problem is the time it takes to cool a building. It's a budget issue that all face. Around here -- and I imagine the same is true in other locales --most churches don't fire up the units until early Sunday morning, and it takes hours before a comfortable temperature is sustained.

Normally, I'm not a fan of the death penalty except for extreme circumstances. I definitely think this is a case of extreme circumstances. Not only are there are eye witnesses to mass murder plus there is a confession & manifesto. I don't see any reason for any doubt that he committed the crime. He needs to leave this earth.

He's not "out" yet. He will get a trial. IMO he will then be "out" (as in found guilty).

He was on video and there are living witnesses.

You seem to keep implying there's no evidence against him. The evidence will be shown.

I'm not big on conspiracy theories. So I'm not buying the "someone said he confessed". IMO there is no reason LE would say he did if he didn't. That video will also come out.

He's innocent until proven guilty, but we are discussing the case. We are discussing what we have seen and heard. That's what we have at this point.

Apparently this photo was taken at a slave plantation. Apparently, he had been touring these kind of sites beginning the end of last year when he fisrt got involved with the white supremacy group Council of Concerned Citizens. They seem to be the kind of group that radicalizes people, encouraging them to act out, become violent.

Anyway, this article has a pretty detailed timeline of his white supremacist activities leading up to the attack on the church. Its from the Daily Beast, hope that is an ok source.
