Is this the Denmark Vessey that Bruck asked about? :thinking:

Denmark Vesey

"Denmark Vesey (also Telemaque) (ca. 1767 – July 2, 1822) was a literate, skilled carpenter and leader among African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina. He is notable as the accused and convicted ringleader of "the rising,"[1] a major potential slave revolt planned for the city in June 1822; he was executed. Likely born into slavery in St. Thomas, he served a master in Bermuda for some time before being brought to Charleston, where he gained his freedom.[2]..."

Prosecutors: KKK hood, Nazi drawings found in Dylann Roof's bedroom

"Federal prosecutors have introduced photos of a Ku Klux Klan hood and drawings of Nazi symbols found in Dylann Roof's bedroom, and plan to submit videos he took of himself taking target practice with the gun he later used to kill nine black parishioners at Emanuel AME Church.

A parade of law enforcement witnesses today have described various items seized from the room where Roof lived with his mother and her boyfriend in Eastover, near the state capital of Columbia. The evidence ranged from boxes of bullets to a homemade Klan hood and a stuffed bunny toy wrapped in little Confederate flags. .."

Testimony shows Dylann Roof scouted Emanuel AME Church for months before massacre

"Dylann Roof apparently scouted out Emanuel AME Church for months before the June 2015 night when he gunned down nine parishioners during a Bible study in Charleston, according to an FBI agent's testimony.

Data from Roof's Garmin GPS device showed Roof traveled to the church from his home near Columbia on Dec. 22, 2014, stopping in front of Emanuel twice that day in between a 90-minute visit to Boone Hall plantation in Mount Pleasant, Agent Joseph Hamski told a jury this afternoon. The GPS cut off for about an hour outside the church at one point, indicating a stop, before resuming on a trip back home, he said.

Jay Dee Krull of Garmin GPS testified earlier that Roof's GPS showed three more trips from Columbia to the area near Emanuel leading up to the attack: one in February 2014, another nine days after purchasing a handgun in April 2015, and a final trip the day of the attack on June 17, 2015..."

Evidence shows Dylann Roof's actions leading up to church shooting

"...The timeline of Roof’s actions leading up to the shooting begins on Dec. 22, 2014. Driving from Columbia to Charleston, he would pass by Emanuel AME before touring Boone Hall Plantation. By the following February, Roof began making payments for the website where he would eventually post a manifesto detailing his white nationalist ideals. On Feb. 23, 2015, a 13-second call to Emanuel AME was made from Roof’s home. The following morning, Roof traveled to Charleston again, once more stopping near Mother Emanuel.

After a brief waiting period and a failed background check, Roof completed the purchase for the Glock pistol traced back to the church shooting on April 16, 2015. Multiple videos taken from the camera found in his room show Roof firing the weapon in his backyard.

Roof traveled to Charleston again on April 25 and May 9 of last year, visiting more plantations and stopping at Emanuel AME. Between those dates and the day of the shooting, Roof purchased more than 100 rounds of ammunition.

On June 17, 2015, at 6:13 p.m., Roof left Columbia to travel to Charleston. He arrived at Mother Emanuel at 8:16 p.m. and was welcomed to take part in the evening Bible study. Roof now faces one of two charges for the murders committed in the church that night: life in prison without the possibility of release or the death penalty. Once jurors arrive at a verdict regarding Roof’s guilt or innocence, they must then consider his sentence during a separate phase of the trial..."

Dylann Roof’s attorneys now say they will call witnesses during trial

"CHARLESTON, S.C.—Attorneys for the man accused of slaying nine black people during a Bible study at a South Carolina church said Tuesday they planned to call witnesses to testify in his defence after all.

Last week, David Bruck had said he didn’t plan to put up much of a defence of Dylann Roof, saying the facts of the case are largely undisputed. But before jurors returned to court Tuesday, Bruck told U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel he planned to call “several” witnesses. He did not specify who..."

A Top Defender, Sidelined by the Accused in Charleston Church Massacre

"CHARLESTON, S.C. — David I. Bruck has spent decades crafting legal strategies to keep people out of the country’s execution chambers. He has argued before the United States Supreme Court seven times, winning six times. He has frustrated prosecutors, challenged judges and softened grim-faced juries.

But on the first day of the federal trial of Dylann S. Roof, the self-described white supremacist who is charged with killing nine black parishioners at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Mr. Bruck told jurors something unusual: “This is the only phase of the case in which Mr. Roof will be represented by counsel.”

Mr. Roof, 22, has elected to defend himself during the portion of the trial, expected early next year, when jurors are poised to decide whether to sentence him to death. Mr. Roof could reverse his unexplained decision, but for now, Mr. Bruck is left to prepare his final words to the jury before ceding the defense lawyer’s chair to the defendant for the only part of the proceedings that is in any real dispute...."

A look inside the trial of Dylann Roof

"A deep stillness settled over the federal courtroom as graphic photos were shown of the nine people murdered last year at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church.

The defendant, 22-year-old Dylann Roof, sat motionless throughout, as he has since his death penalty trial began Wednesday. Behind him sat his paternal grandparents, media and members of the general public...

By anyone’s definition, Roof is a racist, but surely this is too facile an explanation. The rational mind wants more. Insanity? Not according to a psychiatrist who examined him. What then?..."

OPINION

Dylann Roof is the best argument we have for the death penalty

"Like so many Americans, I have found myself in recent years on a journey when it comes to capital punishment.

I used to be an ardent supporter of the death penalty. Twenty years ago, I would have confidently argued that the only reason there is any doubt about the deterrent effect of capital punishment is that we execute too few murderers and do so too slowly. I would have waved away any anecdote about innocent people being released from death row by saying something like, "The fact that someone who was not guilty did not die is not an argument against capital punishment."...

...some crimes are so heinous, there is no other just punishment for them.

For an example, look no further than the trial of Dylann Roof. Roof has confessed to murdering nine innocent Americans during a prayer service at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina. He killed them in cold blood while they prayed, in premeditated fashion, because of the hatred burning in his heart.

Many of the common objections to the death penalty do not apply in Roof's case. There is no doubt about his guilt. "I went to that church in Charleston and I did it," he confessed with a laugh. "Did you shoot them?" a law enforcement officer asked. "Yes," Roof replied, laughing again..."

No where in the evidence is there any explanation for this. Did the cops even ask him about this? Did they interview the guy whose plates were stolen? I don't like loose ends.

Any racist extreme enough to kill innocent people is certainly NOT going to have any black friends!

Or maybe Roof never made any confession. They can do anything with today's video and audio technical wizardry. Fake news, anybody?

Mr Bruck and his colleagues have an uneviable record of getting each and everyone of their clients into a concrete box at supermax for life. That's what you call a 'good' lawyer? Any overworked public defender could do as well.

Since we are only able to get a taste of what is actually being testified to, as it is through journalist tweets, perhaps your questions would be better answered by the journalists themselves. I do get your point though. The State needs to tidy up all the inconsistencies when they take this case to trial for whatever reason.

There is no question in my mind that DSR committed this crime and killed 9 innocent people. I am not sure why the Feds turned down the LWOP plea deal, especially since it has been reported that some family members were not happy with that decision. IMOO

I am not wedded to any one theory. Just that I do not believe Roof knowingly, consciously committed this crime.

I am not sure what this means exactly. I think he knowingly committed this premeditated crime. He may have been in some type of "fugue state?" when he pulled the trigger. It would not surprise me if he is diagnosed with schizophrenia or some other mental illness/disorder by the time he is 25. IMO

At its March 15, 2016 session, the Judicial Conference received the report of its Committee on Court Administration and Casement Management (CACM), which agreed not to recommend any changes to the Conference policy at that time. the Ninth Circuit Judicial Council, in cooperation with the Judicial Conference authorized the three districts in the Ninth Circuit that participated in the cameras pilot (California Northern, Washington Western, and Guam) to continue the pilot program under the same terms and conditions to provide longer term data and information to CACM. The following is the current policy for cameras in trial courts:

A judge may authorize broadcasting, televising, recording, or taking photographs in the courtroom and in adjacent areas during investitive, naturalization, or other ceremonial proceedings. A judge may authorize such activities in the courtroom or adjacent areas during other proceedings, or recesses between such other proceedings, only:

1) for the presentation of evidence;
2) for the perpetuation of the record of the proceedings;
3) for security purposes;
4) for other purposes of judicial administration;
5) for the photographing, recording, or broadcasting of appellate arguments; or
6) in accordance with pilot programs approved by the Judicial Conference.

When broadcasting, televising, recording, or photographing in the courtroom or adjacent areas is permitted, a judge should ensure that it is done in a manner that will:

1) be consistent with the rights of the parties,
2) not unduly distract participants in the proceeding, and
3) not otherwise interfere with the administration of justice.

Beware of cases where all the evidence seems to be a little bit too "pat." Dylan Roof seems to be a criminal defendant who implicated himself at every opportunity, leaving a trail of clues that was too neatly arranged and too easy to find.

ps
Does anybody know if Roof was a fan of the computer game "World of Warcraft?"

I am not a conspiracy theorist so IMO, DSR was not sophisticated enough to cover up his crime and IMO he expected to be caught.
