How old would Nina be now?
Maybe something will trigger in her mind.
Who actually raised her after Paul went missing?

Here are a couple thoughts &/or questions I had in beginning to read through these documents.

1. Does anyone know if the police / phone co. could trace calls "after-the-fact" back in '87, or did they need to have a "tracer" active on the line already (i.e., expecting a suspicious or harassing call)? (ETA: Somewhere in the docs, I later saw reference to "all local calls," so I think they were able to check somehow & could see the calls did not originate outside of the immediate area.)

My guess (which is not a big leap, I know) is that SB made both the "long-distance sounding" call to Family Services (who likely would not have known either LM or SB's voices) and also the call to JB at 11am that she later denied. I suspect she thought the better of that call in midstream & hung up so she could rethink things and tweak her story before proceeding with it. Eleven a.m. is the same time she supposedly laid down for the (2.5 hr.) nap with the help of those muscle relaxers. Did she think those were just a good excuse to explain the long nap? My experience with those is that you're supposed to use them for extreme muscle spasms only.

2. As many are asking, why did JB stay after this kind of abuse? Blood spatter? Beating a child so badly that he soiled himself? Needing to be pulled off of a 6-yr. old child? (ETA: Later in the docs it appeared to say that he was beaten "because" he soiled himself, so I may have misunderstood this the first time I read it.)

Since JB evidently changed his belief that SB was involved in P's disappearance, there are a few thoughts that come to mind. First, that SB "has something on him," as others of you have alluded to. If not that, could it have to do with some extreme form of co-dependence? ("You did this and it's awful, but I can't imagine you going off to prison and leaving me behind!"). The only other idea that occurs to me is that maybe he's really brainwashed by her after-the-fact, and comes to believe whatever crazy story it is she comes up with. It's hard to imagine any parent hanging around under those circumstances. I'm guessing that SB purposely targeted JB due to some vulnerability/inferiority of his that makes him easy for her to control and manipulate. (ETA: And he's a drill sergeant? Sounds to me like she's the one giving the orders @ home.) However, the fact that he failed his polygraph would not support the last idea.

Returning to read some more...

This case is solveable Just throw the both of them in jail!! Then they will know they have gotten the right one/ or both. Those poor children, the abuse they went through, thankfully the girl was put into care, else she may have wound up dead also

So was N. in school or not? I was wondering why the school wouldn't notice such severe injuries that were going untreated (her back, I could see them missing -- but her hands?). But from where I'm at in the docs right now, it sounds like SB had taken her out of school? Presumably, to conceal the abuse that was taking place.

Am I reading this right that she hadn't talked to P. for a week because his dad could deal with him?

And exactly how does it make sense that LM is "doing this" (allegedly taking P.) out of spite if SB readily admits that she wants nothing to do with them anyway, and didn't get married to raise kids? Wouldn't LM be taking a burden off of her if she'd taken him?

I am slowly reading through the docs. Am only on page 14, but geez, was Susan Baker playing with police after Paul's disappearance?

Hi, CarrieBean - I take it you're thinking it might've been her that sent the letter to look in "the Sarasota, FL area"? BTW, can you imagine? Not exactly specific!

P.S. When you reach Pg. 45, you'll see you aren't the only one thinking she's toying with LE!

This link to the SB property shows that the trailor was put up in 2002,and the shed in 97.
Was there another trailor there before this newer one and if so where is it?
Thinking here, DNA ?
I think, JB,Sb,and TP know exactly where little P is.
I still cant believe that Shannon was found, what a miracle she is.

I'm thinking she sent the letter, called the landfill, and made the phone call to Family Services the day Paul went missing (claiming to be Linda).

Going to keep reading...

They talk about stains that might be blood in hallway and bedroom even taking scrapings, but i don't see any results of the blood splatter.

That caught my eye - they should still have those blood samples and could be running DNA tests on them to see if they're Paul's.

Am still reading ....noted on page 9 onward that a teenager reported seeing a child's body at "Bobs' Point" on Lady Island. It'd be interesting to re-visit that report and that location. The other "reports" (landfill, calling pretending to be Linda, etc) could very well have been SB. But that one wasn't her.

Oh and they realllly should've redacted that Incident Report better, sheesh...

ETA: When JB says he thinks SB threw Paul's body in Battery River - I can't map it but am wondering if that's upstream or nearby Lady Island? Just a thought relating to the teenager's report (above).

passionflower, with regards to N's age, I would estimate her to be around 28, give or take, if she was 6 years old in '87 when P went missing. Does that sound about right?

As for who wound up raising N., I remembered reading this, here:

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/baker_paul.html

"...Nina spent some time in foster care [and] was eventually placed with her maternal grandmother while [L - JB's ex - N's mother] was given an opportunity to improve her life...."

Incidentally, I realize this is a thread for P., but I have the same questions/concerns as you re: JB supposedly "not knowing" that SD was in the home -- how is that even remotely possible? Was he relegated to a separate wing of the home? Gads. That seems very implausible, even if SD was conditioned not to cry because no one attended to her needs when she did cry. :(

I just wanted to chime in about garbage in the Beaufort area. (not sure how it goes if you live on the base)
When i lived in Beaufort, we would bring our own trash to the dump. It would be open certain times and have 2 or 3 different dumpsters (depending on what type of trash and which dump you went to). It had certain hours it was open and there was a booth there with a worker. People would drive up and drop their garbage bags down into their designated dumpsters. (for example, one was for bulk, bottles, cardboard).

Some people opt to hire garbagemen come to pick up their trash.

Not sure if it was the same way back when Paul went missing, however with the tons of people that come and go at the dump to drop off garage, everything gets mixed together.

The huge dumpsters would be emptied (at some huge huge dump somewhere) time to time.

I hope i explained this right, any questions, please ask me.

The PDF file from the islandpacket is great! Thank you all for the link, i am in process of reading it now =)

Paul was reported missing on Thurs. the 5th. JB hadn't seen him since Tues. the 3rd? Nina doesn't recall seeing Paul the day he went missing. What day did Paul really go missing?

I also wanted to add that there are gators around those parts. A lot of the towns are really little islands. There is a lot of water everywhere. As far up as Sheldon, i've seen a gator with my sister.

In the PDF files, on page 4, SB mentions she locked all the doors before she took a nap. I'm not sure exactly where in Beaufort they lived, however even when i lived there a few years ago we didn't lock our door most the time. It's very safe, it seems odd she would mention to them she locked the door, especially back then in the 80's.

She is a very evil woman!
I hope LE can find out each and every child that may have been in the Baker's presence. With their track record starting with Paul.. Lord knows.

I just read the docs. And I have a question... I have raised 3 boys the oldest is 20 and the youngest 9..... I really don't remember at any time any of them (after turning 1 at the latest) getting up at 9 am and then taking a nap at 11:30....

IMO.. this woman is twisted, and did just enough to cover her A** .... I really hope this case comes to an end and she gets what she deserves..

and was the step bro that says sb wouldn't hurt a fly, never saw her violent, etc etc. The same one that lived in that house?

i thought it was her 1/2 brother who said she wouldn't hurt anyone??

The bro that lived with her is supposedly deceased.

He, wife and 2 kids were there, but also early on it was said they bought the house but the cops were at the rental office which is how they knew there were 4 kids....

Another house???

that and poor Nina was on the bus at 730am then home at 1130 and told to go take a nap with no mention of lunch too.

Not sure when sb pulled Nina out of school but first place i read she had broken bones was in her hands....

Sounds like Nina was there all day too!!

Wonder why she wasn't doing her work!!

ALL THIS TALK ABOUT PAUL WETTING HIMSELF, AND SOILING THE BED THEY SAID HE WAS 3 AND HE WAS SICK

IT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE IT BOILED DOWN TO PAULS ACCIDENTS AND SB'S VERY BAD TEMPER. AND JB IS NO BETTER!!
