CHARLESTON (WCIV) — South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson concedes a hearing may be needed to decide if convicted killer Alex Murdaugh should get a new day in court amid allegations of jury tampering in the former lawyer’s Colleton County murder trial.

In a response filed Friday with the S.C. Court of Appeals, Wilson and staff say the appellate panel should dismiss the retrial motion by Murdaugh’s attorneys Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian for a “procedural defect” in the filing.

Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers made mistakes when they asked an appellate court to halt the convicted murderer’s appeal, citing allegations of jury tampering in his trial, South Carolina’s Attorney General said Friday.

The claim from Attorney General Alan Wilson came in response to Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial. Murdaugh claimed in his motionthat Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill tampered with the jury. The jury found Murdaugh guilty of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, after three hours of deliberation last March.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Prosecutors suggested Friday that convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh’s defense attorneys got some details wrong when they recently accused the court clerk of improperly influencing the jury.

Murdaugh was sentenced this March to life in prison for the June 2021 shooting deaths of his wife and youngest son. But in a Sept. 5 request for a new trial, his lawyers alleged that Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill told jurors not to trust his testimony, pressured them to reach a quick verdict and held private conversations with the foreperson. [...] The state asked Judge Clifton Newman to grant 10 days for their counterparts “to correct the procedural defect” and establish the timeline. If a potential evidentiary hearing turns up no credible proof, prosecutors plan to argue against the motion for a new trial.

Driving back home from Charleston I have this nagging thought that Alex Murdaugh still has significant money secreted somewhere. Why else would he make it a point during his guilty plea to point out that he is going to continue to contest owing the Satterfields $4.3 million pursuant to the judgment he gave to them in May of 2022. Knowing that he’s going to spend the rest of his life in prison or close to it depending if the murder conviction stands or gets reversed, why would he care if the Satterfields have a judgment that they can’t collect upon because he is broke. I don’t believe he’s broke, and neither does he. EB
