Phonesia Machado-Fore, 52, was last seen at her home on Wildwood Loop in Marion on Tuesday. Machado-Fore's body was recovered outside of Lake View in Dillon County around 6:15 p.m. on Friday, according to Marion County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Tammy Erwin.

The New Mexico State Police contacted Marion County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division Friday morning to alert that Machado-Fore's BMW DX7C was involved in the murder of one of their officers, Erwin said. Federal, State, and local authorities worked across the country in an attempt to identify the driver as well as find Machado-Fore. The investigation led law enforcement officers to a property in Dillon County where Machado-Fore was located.

Erwin said overnight, New Mexico State Police identified the driver of Machado-Fore's car as Jaremy Smith, 32, of Marion. Arrest warrants were issued for Smith in connection to the murder of New Mexico State Police officer Justin Hare.

“Mrs. Fore was one of us, a fellow first responder,” Wallace said. “Her death is senseless. Our community has suffered a tremendous loss. My team and I will not stop until we bring the person or persons responsible for her death to justice."

Florence County Emergency Medical Services released a statement on Saturday confirming that Machado-Fore was a paramedic crew chief and sergeant with their agency and had been associated with several emergency medical service agencies in the region.

The agency said through her work and in her personal life, Machado-Fore "touched countless lives."

"Phonesia would strive, every day, to be the best person she could and to take care of others," the agency added. "She truly had a servant's heart and genuinely loved people."

Florence offered condolences to her family, adding that she leaves behind children and grandchildren.

Authorities said Hare was dispatched about 5 a.m. Friday to help a motorist in a white BMW with a flat tire on Interstate 40, west of Tucumcari.

Hare parked behind the BMW, and the suspect got out, approached the patrol car on the passenger side, then shot the officer without warning. They said the suspect then walked to the driver's side of the police vehicle, shot Hare again, and pushed him into the back seat before taking off in the patrol vehicle.

State police were alerted to the shooting by a "duress signal" coming from Hare's radio, Weisler said. The arriving officer found the abandoned patrol car, and later the wounded officer farther back on a frontage road near the interstate. Hare was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. --

That link didn't work for me until the third try? But Jaremy Smith is in custody!!!

Smith has a criminal history including taking hostages and rioting in jail, burglary, breaking and entering, armed robberies, resisting/evading police officers, auto theft, and shooting at/from a motor vehicle.

I wonder if Smith was known to Phonesia or if it was a random attack like a carjacking and kidnapping. She was found in an abandoned building.

NMSP Chief Troy Weisler said Smith had a flat tire on I-40 on Friday. Officer Hare was dispatched to assist Smith.

However, when Hare offered to give him a ride into town, Weisler said without warning Smith shot Hare twice and then pushed Officer Hare into the passenger seat of the patrol car as he stole the vehicle.

So will New Mexico get the first bite at the predator? Not that I'm worried about him walking as a free man ever again.

I wondered that also. I haven't found anything yet that even hints at an answer.
