I had a guy hop into my car one time thinking I was an Uber. I was so confused and didn’t realize why he’d jumped in my backseat but the friend I was dropping off who had just gotten out of the car figured it out quick and said ‘dude she isn’t an uber’. So for people asking why she got in so fast and confidently I don’t know but that guy sure didn’t hesitate.

( Well that’s BS of them to block the video! How are you supposed to sleuth at work? ;) )

I've been telling them the same thing! They block Facebook but not Twitter, and most stuff I can get to so it's not too bad. A huge part of my job is investigating and finding people so they can't handcuff me too much.

This convinces me I need to arrange rides from friends, not strangers, or as a poster previously mentioned use a well marked taxi service. This type of crime might really escalate. Look how fast this happened. Any perp looking for a victim can cruise the hot spots after hours & find people waiting for a car.

Samantha’s case is hitting me extra hard for some reason, they all do, but there’s something about this...perhaps because it’s easy to see the very bright future she could have had ahead of her, United Nations, helping others...sorry words aren’t coming out well...having a really hard time reading this thread...sickening.

So he had a girlfriend and loved God and basketball. And yet, he allegedly murdered a young woman, most likely in a planned fashion. Some wires must have crossed somewhere because all that just doesn't mesh well. IMO
My guess is that it wasn’t planned in any way. I would bet green money that he stupidly thought she was a prostitute and turned murderously angry when she wouldn’t do what he expected of her.

South Carolina college student got into a car she thought was her Uber, she ended up dead in a rural field, police say
Samantha Josephson decided to call an Uber around 2 a.m. Friday after being separated from her roommates during a night out in Columbia, South Carolina, police said Saturday.

[...]

Josephson's roommates began to worry when they hadn't heard from her later Friday morning. Holbrook said, and they called the police around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

While Columbia police were starting their investigation, turkey hunters found a body around 4 p.m. Friday about 40 feet off a dirt road in a wooded area in Clarendon County, southeast of Columbia, Holbrook said. It was identified as Josephson's.

Police searched for the car Josephson had gotten into and around 3 a.m. Saturday a Columbia officer saw the Impala and stopped the vehicle, Holbrook said. When the officer asked the driver to get out the car, he ran but was quickly captured, the chief said.

[...]

CNN reached out to Uber Saturday, but the company declined to comment. Uber's online safety tips advise drivers to check that the license plate, driver photo and driver name match what's listed in the app before getting in the car.

Was there another person in the car with him when he picked up Samantha? This article mentions another person in the car when he was stopped on Saturday at 3am (25 hours later) because of an alert on his car. He got out and fled on foot before being arrested.

24-year-old man charged with kidnapping, murder of UofSC student Samantha Josephson

"Officials say there was an acquaintance of Rowland in the car during the traffic stop and that person is cooperating with police."

Thanks. There was some confusion where I read he had another "fare" in the car with him when he picked her up.

Thank you! Had one in my previous car and forgot about it. Just ordered 2 from amazon only $16.

I did too. One for me and my 25 year old daughter who Uber’s quite a bit and is 2500 miles away from under my protective momma helicopter wings (sometimes I think it’s harder to be a mom to young teen/adult children vs when they are little :()

Also some pepper spray

I can see her text to me now when she gets the package...
“mom, you have got to take a break from Webseluths!”
But thank you <3”

These last several weeks have been just too many of these precious young women. Libby, Jassy, Savannah, Samantha
Heartbreaking, senseless, horrific

Does anyone have a link to a live 11pm local news?

This is why I wish all states would start requiring two plates. We’ve got cameras everywhere, but a plate can only be seen from one side.

I literally walk around and check the plates and the driver sees me do this. AND I call them out if it doesn’t match. I also have other rather extreme measures I take. These include not entering certain exact addresses, screen shotting their profile and sending it to someone, not using my real name (my registration reflects this as to the name they see when they pick me up), having them drop me off somewhere different, waiting for them to pull out til I go where I’m going, fibbing where I’m going when they ask (“you going to work?” “Nah just doing some shopping..”). There’s a grocery store by my gym, I get dropped off at the grocery store instead, bla bla bla. But that’s me and I’m paranoid for real.

Driver: “So where do you work?”
Me: “Oooh, I’m an astronaut..”
Jk

Normal non-paranoid people like me? Easy for them to get caught up in the flow and be as unaware about revealing personal details as they may be on SM.

Now, I am embarrassed to say that in hindsight I have made some BIG mistakes, like taking STUPID chances on helping them carry my groceries if I feel like I trust them and am really having back pain or whatever. Stupid. I shouldn’t trust females either lol.

Here’s why I don’t take Uber unless it’s an absolute emergency (Lyft is a better company overall moo) (I think Samantha’s killer guy may have been posing or whatever (still catching up), but I’m all about the constructive and this obviously brings up safety concerns re: Uber so just want to briefly mention this:

Uber fined $8.9 million by Colorado for allowing drivers with felony convictions, other drivers license issues

Also:

While I’ve made some iffy calls re: drivers, I am especially concerned for the female drivers and the elderly drivers. I always ask them if they’ve gotten any riffraff, and they’ll usually say “one or two” (oh the stories I’ve heard), then I give them a lecture on how if you EVER feel uncomfortable you are NOT obligated to continue taking this person...”...There are many female drivers, young to old.

Ok enough about that, steering off topic, the above link is worth a read, still catching up, just wanted to share some general thoughts on Uber Safety since there are elements of this within the discussion.

(Oh and there should never be anyone else in the car other than the driver.)

So many people around, all those males...but how could they have known...? :(

In the video, it looks to me like a young man in a plaid shirt with lighter hair is talking on a phone, when he stops and kind of gives the car a long glance. It looks like something feels wrong to him but he can't put his finger on it so he doesn't feel he can/should intervene. I don't know that it would have helped in this case, since by all appearances she got in the car willingly, but I think bystander training regarding when it's appropriate to intervene in situations would be great for this age group.
