According to court documents, Erica Butts told authorities she beat the child multiple times with a belt after the child urinated on the floor. Butts also said Serenity hit her head multiple times while falling in the bathroom and thirty minutes after the last fall, Butts said the child’s breathing became shallow.

Coincidentally, I was on a JonBenet Ramsey thread yesterday. This is one of the theories about what happened to her. That her mother lost it when JonBenet wet the bed again and hit her hard enough for her to fall and hit her head.

Butts, the godmother, entered an Alford plea, meaning she maintains her innocence but acknowledges that taking her case to trial would likely result in a conviction. For practical purposes, she is considered guilty in the eyes of the law.

Cunningham pleaded guilty.

The court treats the two pleas the same, and each woman faces 20 years to life in prison on the charge.

I was reading back over past articles on the net about this case. One said Serenity died from full-body blunt force trauma. I didn't even know there was such a thing.

Oh BeanE, I love that picture! What a little princess she was. Thanks for posting this update. I was born in the old Summerville hospital and have lived here for 42 years.

This sentence is music to my ears. I remember the Serenity case well. That poor little girl. These women are simply evil.

They should be ashamed of themselves. Their outburst in that court pales in comparison to the torture they put Serenity through. They think they were in pain hearing their sentence? Just imagine what Serenity went through.

RIP Sweet angel baby! Your violators will pay the ultimate price for your demise.

It seems funny to me that both collapsed in the courtroom. Did they have that planned to try to get sympathy or did one copy off the other?

I note that both deny being the one who killed Serenity, both blamed the other yet it doesn't sound like either were very forthcoming on what happened to her. Neither seem to understand that if they struck one blow, they were guilty. If they saw a blow struck and did not get her help for her, they were guilty and if they saw her becoming ill and did nothing, they were guilty.

I wonder when they get to prison and the guards give them an order, will they collapse in tears? When one of the other women give them an order or else, will they collapse? If so they won't last long themselves.

Erica Mae Butts and Shanita Latrice Cunningham, both 25, each collapsed upon hearing that they would serve life in prison for killing 3-year-old Serenity Richardson, Butts' goddaughter, two years ago.

The sentencing hearing took nearly two hours and ended with court officials dragging Cunningham from the courtroom on a chair and peeling Butts from the floor as she writhed and screamed hysterically.

Crying and writhing for themselves. I don't even want to imagine what Serenity suffered at the hands of these vile women.
