Thank you for posting this article, @sds71.

Encouraging info? Time will tell, imo. :)

From the article:

SLED Chief Mark Keel has been keeping the Smith family updated, and the most recent SLED update was promising, Bland said.

"According to Chief Keel, they (SLED) have some individuals in mind who have some knowledge and responsibility, and they are issuing subpoenas and warrants," Bland recently told The Hampton County Guardian.

Bland is also seeing evidence, although unconfirmed, that the S.C. Attorney General's Office has empaneled the S.C. State Grand Jury.

"Only a court or a grand jury can issue subpoenas," added Bland. "I really do feel like by Labor Day we should see some sign of movement and know some things publicly."

Great news ! Labor Day seems so far away, but will be here in no time !

There will be justice for #stephensmith, I believe. Likely not involving #Buster but rather involving those responsible. A Grand Jury has been convened.

Grand jury empaneled in Stephen Smith death case:

Jun 16th, 2023, 5:51 pm

A grand jury is hearing evidence in the death of Stephen Smith, an openly gay teenager found dead in the middle of a road in South Carolina in 2015, according to a lawyer for Smith’s mother.

Smith’s death, and his family’s questions surrounding it, received renewed attention through the prosecution of Alex Murdaugh for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Smith was a classmate of Murdaugh’s eldest son, Buster.

“I can say there’s a grand jury empaneled and I think substantial progress is being made,” Eric Bland, an attorney representing Smith’s mother, Sandy Smith, told Law&Crime. “I have been authorized to say that progress is being made and there’s probably five to six individuals that have material information as to what happened to Stephen.”

Bland said he’s hopeful an answer about what happened to Smith could come by Labor Day.

STEPHEN SMITH DEATH INVESTIGATION: WAS RANDY MURDAUGH THERE?

Sandy Smith said she saw Alex and Randy Murdaugh at the scene of her son's death, but Randy's attorney said that's not true.

June 20, 2023

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (Court TV) — A grand jury has been empaneled as part of the investigation into Stephen Smith‘s death, months after renewed attention was focused on the case in the wake of Alex Murdaugh‘s murder trial.

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (Court TV) — In an interview with Court TV on Tuesday evening, the attorney representing Stephen Smith‘s mother, Sandy, revealed that the Murdaugh family is calling Sandy’s recollection of the morning her son died into question.

[..]

Sandy Smith previously told Court TV’s Vinnie Politan that on the morning her son’s body was removed from the road, she saw Alex and Randy Murdaugh at the scene. On Tuesday, Eric Bland told Politan that Randy Murdaugh’s attorney is disputing Sandy’s recollection of events. Murdaugh, through his attorney, said that was at the scene where Stephen’s body was found the day following his death with an investigator, but denied being there when Sandy was. Sandy has said that Randy was at the scene twice: both when the body was moved initially by police and again the next day with an investigator.

The questions surrounding who was present at the scene come as Bland confirmed that a grand jury has been impaneled in Stephen’s death. Bland said that he has heard through several sources that there are five to six people with knowledge of what happened the night Stephen was killed, and that the grand jury has been issuing subpoenas.

[..]

“I absolutely believe that they knew that Stephen was on that road,” Bland said. “And whether they were trying to scare him and it got out of control and they hit him — I don’t think the automobile actually struck him or the moving vehicle — I think there could have been something extending from the moving vehicle, we’ll have to see what the professionals say.”

Dr. Michelle DuPree, who attended the autopsy, confirmed that Stephen’s skull was fractured, but did not have any depressed fractures that would have been consistent with being beaten by a bat or a pipe.

Bland said Sandy would like justice for her son, but her main goal is to find out what happened.

While he was unable to reveal the contents of the report, Bland said that he believes that Stephen died on the road where he was found and that he was hit by something projecting out of a moving vehicle.

That makes the most sense to me of how this happened. Unfortunately, they're going to have to depend on somebody coming forward to solve it. jmo

Reminds me of the Jenny Pratt case from the old Unsolved Mysteries. Some people drove by in a car while she was on the back of her boyfriend's motorcycle and hit her with a board.

What in the world would AM and RM be doing on the scene so soon?? Do they have no compassion or are they just soulless, blood sucking ambulance chasers? I'm surprised JMM wasn't there too. GAH, this makes me sick.

Poor Sandy, I hope she gets the answers she's been searching so long for. This woman deserves this at least.

Here is a video on my Good morning America appearance this morning about Buster talking about Stephen Smith. EB

moo

BM: When Stephen was killed I was at our Edisto beach house… with […] my mother.

EB: We have no knowledge if Buster did this, but ... again he’s in a difficult situation when he starts to address it. It puts him in a position of being defensive.

He didn’t say he had no knowledge of Stephen’s death, what he said was, I didn’t have anything to do with it. And I think there should have been a follow up question asked about do you have any knowledge about how Stephen died.
