Sumter man missing since late January, deputies say

Deputies are searching for man they say has been missing since late January, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Thirty-seven-year-old Willie Hodge, Jr. was last seen leaving a house at 1105 Island Drive in Sumter County Wednesday, Jan. 23, according to the Office.

Deputies describe Hodge as a white man who’s 5-foot-8, around 140 lbs., has brown hair and brown eyes. Hodge also has tattoos on both is left and right arms, deputies say.

Hodge was also last seen wearing black jeans, a black long sleeve t-shirt, gray Nike shoes and a gray John Deere toboggan.

Details of Disappearance
Hodge was last seen by his family in Sumter County, South Carolina on the evening of January 23, 2019. He had an altercation with his mother, left a residence in the 1100 block of Island Drive, and never returned.

On January 24, the police pulled him over as he was driving at the intersection of Pinewood Road and Columbia Circle. During the traffic stop, Hodge pulled the car into a driveway on Columbia Circle and fled on foot into the woods, leaving his cellular phone and driver's license in the vehicle. His family reported him missing on January 30. He has never been heard from again and is considered missing under unclear circumstances.

More than two years have passed since the disappearance of 39-year-old Willie Hodge.

Sumter County investigators say tips have come in, but still no answers as to where Hodge could be.

For the last two years and one month, Hodge has remained hopeful that her brother will come back home

"We've gotten a lot of stories on what might have happened. No concrete evidence on what really happened," said Charles Bonner, Senior Investigator for the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

“This all started for me Dec. 26, 2020, when my son went missing,” she told the crowd.

Brown’s son, Jackson “Brent” Garcia, was 18 when he was last seen. That day changed the lives of many who were determined to never let his name, or 19 others, be forgotten.

“After Brent went missing, we put on a candlelight vigil, and at that candlelight vigil is when I had the idea that I wanted to do a vigil for all of the missing people in Sumter,” Brown said. “We then formed a little group called Sumter’s Missing and Brent’s Army.”

The memorial site ended up taking nearly two years to complete. The group went from council to council, asking for a piece of property. It wasn’t until April 2021 that Sumter County Council approved a site at 115 N. Harvin St., the location of a former Holocaust memorial that has since moved to a new home.

Several families of missing people from Sumter attended and spoke at the unveiling. Those included family members and friends of Garcia, Willie Hodge Jr., Barbara Nave, Tommy Brailey, Barbara Jenkins, Julia Bean, Naomi Collins, Stacy Lester and Shelton Sanders.

Sadie Hodge, the sister of Hodge Jr., who went missing in January 2019, approached the podium first.

“Unfortunately, we still don’t have any answers, so we just continue to pray not only for his return but his safe return or just some answers and peace for the families of all of those who have someone missing,” she said.

She shared with the crowd how her brother had a “rough upbringing," suffered from substance abuse and lived a “bad lifestyle.” She said her brother was still human, regardless of what they’ve been through.

“We still have the right to know what happened to them and where they are,” Hodge said. “There are still people that love them and deserve to know where they are.”
