Scandal brewing at Oral Roberts University

Heh!

What topic causes the most arguments around the world? Religion. Why? Why does talknig about religion cause people to argue? Cause there are so many different religious beliefs and so little tolerance for others people's faith. On TV, there's a show called Kid Nation. They played the kids to bring religion to thier small community. There are baptist, christians, jews, etc. Instant fighting among the community.

My own mother used to send money to Jimmy Swagart monthly until his 'misfortune'. I teased her on this cause a few days before, I had asked for new shoes and was told she had no extra money. Her extra money was sent to Jimmy.

If you ask me, TV evilicals shouldn't even be on the air. They don't get free air time. That money comes from all thier viewers. And what happens to the surplus? Flights to the Carribeans, nice cadillac, tailored suits, etc.

Why can't people research all religions and be open minded about others faith?

HMMMM ... OK I am a bit confused..
Being called home was a threat????
Correct me if I am wrong .. but isnt that suppose to be good if your religious?

No, it isn't a good thing when you're sitting UP in your tower saying God will kill you if you don't raise X amount of dollars. I remember this episode well. Maybe he should have been called home then he would have realized WHAT he was dealing with and finageling others to donate to.

No He did not charge :blowkiss: it's a free gift. There is a scripture somewhere in the New Testament, maybe in Romans??? not sure, but if I recall correctly, and this isn't word for word, but one of the Apostles was healing or doing something like that, and a woman wanted the same gift and was willing to pay for it, God struck her down because she wanted to BUY His free gift, and I think God did this to show all of us that MONEY doesn't buy His good graces.

I think you are getting your stories mixed up. Acts chapter 5 tells of Ananias and Sapphiras selling land and giving to the church. However, they kept part of the money. Instead of telling the church that they kept part of the money, they lied and said that they were presenting all of the money. Their sin was not in that they kept the money, it was that they lied to God. They both lied and they both fell dead. I'm not even exactly sure that it was God who struck them. The passage does not say that. It could have just been heart failure from the shock of being found out.

In Acts 8:18-24 a man named Simon offered Peter and John money if they would give him the power to lay hands on people for them to receive the Holy Ghost. Peter told Simon that he needed to repent because he thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money. Simon asked if they would pray for him, but he didn't drop dead.

Just thought I'd clear that up. :D

SAN DIEGO
Priests Asked to Pay for Abuse

The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego is asking parishioners and priests to help pay for the nearly $200 million sexual abuse settlement it reached last month.

As part of a new campaign, priests will be asked to contribute one month's salary, estimated at $1,485 to $1,535. Retired priests will be asked to contribute according to their means.

Parishioners will be asked for "a generous contribution" as well, "to help cover the expense involved in compassionate outreach," said San Diego Bishop Robert Brom in a memo.

On Sept. 7, San Diego reached a $198.1 million settlement with 144 victims of sexual abuse, the second-largest such settlement since the explosion of the sex abuse scandal in 2002.

Does anyone here think this is okay!

PS I am not a Catholic, I am a Christian. I do not belive that the good and faithful in the Catholic should be paying for something they, had nothing to do with. I don't know where all of you live but where I live is one of the largest and richest Catholic Dioceses in California.

Another P.S I forgot to mention that the San Diego Catholic Diocese also filed for bankruptcy to avoid having to go to trial, having to air their dirty linen (evidence) which they'd claim was lost! Dirty ploy, everyone agrees.
Turn's out after several investigation's order by the Judge, they had a LOT more assets then they were declaring.
Oh my!

It would be a cold day in Hell before I ever contributed to pay for the abuses of the Catholic Church. I would sooner burn my money.

Before we go waaaaaay off topic, I'd like to ask if anyone has seen Jr. Roberts and his wife on TV professing their innocence about all the charges? I saw them briefly on LKL (didn't watch it all) and they had answers for everything! For instance, the remodeling of the home was done for mold damage and that was only for a wall.

I guess we'll find out in years to come what the real story is. It's just interesting that they are already out there denying everything with wide-eyed innocence.

TULSA, Okla., Oct. 17, 2007
(CBS/AP) Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts asked the school's board of regents for a leave of absence Wednesday amid accusations of lavish spending at donors' expense and illegal involvement in a political campaign.

The allegations have rocked the Bible Belt university, known for its 60-foot bronze statue of praying hands, reports CBS News affiliate KOTV. Roberts, 58, said he would continue his role as chairman and CEO of Oral Roberts Ministries.

"I don't know how long this leave of absence will last, but I fully trust the members of the Board of Regents," Roberts said in a statement released by the university. "I pray and believe that in God's timing, and when the Board feels that it is appropriate, I will be back at my post as president." (more at link)

If he ends up quitting or getting fired, I'm sure he'll be getting a very attractive and lucrative severence package.

And then there was Jimmy Swaggart. I can't remember what he did...but I do remember him saying he SINNED.

Some rival evangelist had him followed or followed Swaggart himself and caught him with prostitutes. One prostitute told that he always had her dress and act like a young schoolgirl. Swaggart was a regular.

Well, I wonder if the investigators found what they were looking for. He was very set on not resigning and adament about his innocence and that of his wife. Does he have any other family members that will be taking over for him?

I wonder if SeriouslySearching has heard anything?

What a sad loss for his family during the holiday season. It sounds like he was ready to meet his maker. May he rest in peace.
