Scientists unveil first-ever photo of black hole

WASHINGTON - Scientists on Wednesday revealed the first image ever made of a black hole, depicting its hot, shadowy edges where light bends around itself in a cosmic funhouse effect.

Assembling data gathered by eight radio telescopes around the world, astronomers created the picture showing the violent neighborhood around a supermassive black hole, the light-sucking monsters of the universe theorized by Einstein more than a century ago and confirmed by observations for decades.

It looked like a flaming orange, yellow and black ring...

WOW!! I like this kind of "breaking news." Thanks so much for posting it! (Kind of scary, isn't it? In that awe-some way.)

Thank you for that amazing celestial event! Well, not you for the actual event, but for the link to that incredible capture. And to think, "Countless black holes are now thought to exist in the universe, including an estimated 100 million in our galaxy alone. Lucky for us, astronomers say none is near enough to Earth to pose a threat."

I sure hope that holds true for future humanity.

Trying to attach image for those stopping by for a quickie read :)

This black hole resides 55 million light-years from Earth and has a mass 6.5-billion times that of the Sun.
Event Horizon Telescope collaboration et al.
Snipped.
Absolutely amazed at what scientists have done to capture and study this. I'm truly in awe.
