UPDATE: Authorities believe tracks, damage connected to missing...

A search of the James River for a missing garbage truck was suspended Saturday afternoon after several hours of work.

Law enforcement agencies were on scene where the James River crosses under Highway 37 north of Mitchell in Sanborn County. Three boats with sonar were searching the James River, where officials believe a garbage truck with two people inside went off the highway and into the river.

The truck, which is from Howard, has been missing for more than two days and no one has heard from the two occupants of the vehicle during that time, according to Sanborn County Sheriff Tom Fridley.

Fridley said a person on Thursday afternoon called to report damage on a guard rail and its cabling. There were also a vehicle’s tire tracks leading from the road into the river.

“We believe that the truck that went missing and the tracks by the river are connected,” Fridley said Saturday evening. “But we haven’t been able to find a truck so we can’t confirm that.”

Prayers for these men and their families. I'm guessing the James is running pretty high ( like a whole lot of places in the Northern Planes) sure hope they are found soon.

The two men were last seen around 12:10 p.m. Thursday when they left the Mitchell South Dakota landfill.

[...]

The speed of the flood waters on the river has made the search difficult. The search was halted by darkness Saturday night, but resumed Sunday morning.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

“The bodies of two men have been found in a garbage truck after the vehicle went off the road near Letcher.

[SBM]

A 2000 Mack Truck CH600 garbage truck they were in was northbound on Highway 37 near the James River bridge when the vehicle left the roadway to the right. The Highway Patrol says the vehicle likely had an equipment failure. It then went through the guardrail and vaulted an embankment, ending in the James River.

The truck was found Saturday, and the bodies of the two men were recovered in the truck on Sunday.

[SBM]

The names of the men are not being released pending notification of family.

[SBM]” (BBM)

Rest In Peace.
