ARLINGTON, VA — The family of a 27-year-old man who missed his flight at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Sunday believes he could be the person who Arlington County Police said tried to carjack two people early Monday morning.

After watching a video of one of the carjacking attempts along I-395, posted by reporter Dave Statter, Meghan Byrne said she believes it shows her brother Sean.
Byrne, who said her family wants “to do anything to find him,” believes her brother was suffering from a mental health crisis when he missed his flight on Sunday.
The first of the attempted carjackings in Arlington, which happened only a mile from Reagan National Airport, reportedly occurred around 12:15 a.m. Monday, Arlington County Police said.

“We’re both looking for the same person,” Byrne told Patch about her family trying to find Sean and Arlington County Police’s investigation into the attempted carjackings.

Sean was in D.C. visiting Byrne to celebrate his birthday. On Sunday, Byrne dropped off her brother at Reagan National Airport for a flight with their sister back to Chicago. But her sister called Byrne to let her know that Sean did not make it onto the flight.

After he didn’t show up for his flight on Sunday, Byrne went to Reagan National Airport and filed a missing person's report with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department. She also put together a missing person's poster, with the hope that the public could help the family find Sean.

“We are convinced that that was my brother,” Byrne told ARLnow of the video. “The video that Dave Statter posted matches my brother’s general description and matches his behavior.”

Byrne told Patch that Sean was speaking strangely when he was dropped off at the airport for the flight he was booked to take with their sister. He may have missed the flight because he was suffering a mental health crisis, she said.

On Monday, the Arlington County Police Department said it was investigating two attempted carjackings that occurred early that morning near the Pentagon along Boundary Channel Drive at Interstate 395.

Around 12:15 a.m. Monday, a suspect approached a car that was on the ramp for northbound I-395 from Boundary Channel Drive and started banging on the driver’s windshield and demanded the driver get out of the vehicle. The suspect got into her vehicle but was unable to drive it, according to police.

After Arlington County Police officers arrived on the scene, another driver contacted the police to report an attempted carjacking. The driver said he had been travelling on the ramp for northbound I-395 from Boundary Channel Drive when a suspect matching the description given by the first victim jumped in front of his vehicle, banged on the hood and demanded he get out.

The man accelerated his vehicle, making contact with the suspect, and left the area before calling police. The suspect was last seen running across I-395 toward the exit for the George Washington Memorial Parkway, according to police.

Along with suffering from a mental health crisis, Byrne said her brother may have also lost his wallet.

The Arlington County Police Department told ARLnow that the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department is the primary agency investigating the missing person’s report.

Sean is 6-feet, 2-inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen at Reagan National Airport on Sunday around 7:40 p.m. wearing gray shorts and a black shirt, according to the missing person's poster.

It was both noble and commendable for his family to bring this to the attention of LE. They care. Most people, families included, don’t care anymore.

I also wonder if by ‘mental health crisis’ they meant something to do with him and drugs, or even drinking.

Over 10 years ago I worked in a rehab facility. At that time, over 90% of the alcoholics and/or drug addicts, addicts (in general) had some form of mental illness(es). I can only imagine that this percentage is probably higher, nowadays.
