Severe weather April 13 & 14 2012 in Tornado Alley

Calling all Sleuths in affected areas...check in please!

So sorry for the losses Raeann and Showme have suffered but so happy y'all are still with us.

Thanks for thinking of me. I didn't suffer any losses this time except for a little rip in the screen door, we were blessed.

Our trailer wasn't damaged, blew the skirting out and we were able to put it back in. Hubby's motorcycle was blown down without any damage. Some nice neighbor put it upright in the driveway for me. This happened way many years ago.

Oh no Shelby! I'm so sorry. Sometimes we forget the economical damage that can be done to a crop in a field. It's like hurray! The tornado/storms missed the buildings and went through a rural area, everything is fine. But it's not when it's your crops that are lost.

Big hug.

Thanks for the hug.

I'd rather it hit our fields than someone's house for sure, though! It does suck to lose income, though. We don't get insurance on our wheat crop, but we did this year for the corn that's getting ready to come up.

NMK, what activity I'm seeing for MI is up on the penninsula (I think that's what they call it), and not down in Detroit or suburbs. There may be a strong thunderstorm or two, but I don't see anything which makes me concerned.

Still, pay attention to the local weather, because I can't access the local stuff...

Hugs. Glad you made it all right.

Wuffy, your friend Ruben is fine now, yes?

Jacie, sending hugs to you and family in Woodward...

ETA: NMK, there is a line of Tstorms between Kalamazoo and Goshen. I don't see any concern there yet, but that's the one to keep an eye on. Heavy rain, though.

Woodward Mayor Roscoe Hill said the sirens were not apparently working when the tornado struck, although they had been sounding loudly from storms on Saturday afternoon. The tornado hit in a mixed area of residences and businesses, Hill said.

"We had a little tornado earlier ... and they blew all the sirens. When this one came in, our sirens weren't working," Hill said.

Woodward police said search and rescue units headed to the damaged areas.

In the middle of the night my local news said the warning system got struck by lightning. :(

Well, NE OK did get weather after all, great thunder "Boomer Sooners" and quite
a bit of rain (over 1"), but, after staying up extra late to follow the Woodward disaster,
I slept through it and was only vaguely aware we were having an onslaught of
the bad stuff. Had a letter from my Wichita pal saying he was worried as he
was back awake and following OK storms instead of vice versa. (Based on his
"no worries" responses to me during last night's Wichita tornado, I guess I
should have told him that all retail establisments in Miami were safe, lol.)
Raining here right now. Prayers for all affected by yesterday's storms and
more for those who might have to weather Mother Nature today.

Thanks, HC. I have a sister in Ironwood, my roommate has a sister in Meredith (which is tiny and she lives in a trailer), and my fiancee has family in Bad Axe, so we are all keeping an eye on this.

I've also got to go to work tonight, and I work outside, which means that wind, hail, vision impairing rain, and cloud to ground lighting are all hazards I'll have to watch out for. We'll make it. My sister moved to MI from ME, so you can bet I drilled her to near perfection on every tornado protocol I could think of. I'm sure she's safe. They seem to be more sure of tornadoes again today than they were earlier. I'm half listening to the weather channel, and heard them specifically mention Joplin, MO again, but I'm not sure if they are under threat, or if it was just a reference to their tragedy.

NMK, you're due for a good solid rain/thunder event, but I'm not seeing the hooks or rotation I saw last night down Kansas way. I think it will be a nasty storm, but I don't think it's got the ability to toss a tornado.

But check your own weather service; they will have the latest and best forecasts for you; I'm no meteorologist at all, so don't take my word, all right?

Hang tight.

Twisters in the night are the worst. You can't see them but you can feel them. Not having the sirens working is the worst case scenario. I'm not sure why Woodward didn't check that they were working after the little twister earlier.

This is about 2 miles away from my uncle's ranch. He and my auntie are on vacation; golfing in Hawaii, but 2 of my uncles are headed to Woodward to check on the property. My uncle is a developer and will not build a house without a saferoom. They save lives.

Sorry to hear of the loss of lives. This trailer park was literally out in a field, nothing around and now there is nothing there.

Just received an email weather alert from local (Detroit) TV station. Six counties in southeastern lower Michigan have severe weather advisories: Pea-sized hail, heavy downpours, winds in excess of 30mph, thunder, and lightning. Distant thunder and drizzle at the moment, but it feels like the calm before the storm. Probably best to shut down the computer in case the power goes out. Be safe.

Additional damage reports include a destroyed carpet store on 34th Street by the movie theatre and damaged homes in Hanks Trail, west of the city limits, and in the Tangier blacktop area west of town near the airport. Approximately half a dozen homes along Cheyenne Drive were flattened, and there was extensive damage to many more homes.

There were numerous power lines brought down by the storm as it tracked from the Tangier area northeast up along 34th Street, hitting the Quail Drive area and the movie theaters, Mutual of Omaha building and residential areas along Cheyenne Drive and Ridgecrest Avenue, as it continued to track northeast toward Hideaway Trailer Park.

Officials set up a command post at a truck stop on 36th and Oklahoma.

American Red Cross set up a shelter at Living Word Fellowship Church, 1310 Oklahoma, and there were reports around 5 a.m. on Sunday of up to a dozen people staying there. The Salvation Army also stepped in to assist people.

From the link:
"Some reports are coming in that show as much as an eight-mile damage field starting west of Woodward and extending into the residential areas around 34th Street."

8 miles. God have mercy on all the residents there...

A line of thunderstorms did move through Joplin not long ago but they didn't look too severe; the showers moving northward from western Arkansas now look like they'll miss Joplin (and me, about 25 miles SW of J.).

Extreme windstorms in many parts of the country pose a serious threat to buildings and their occupants. Your residence may be built “to code,” but that does not mean it can withstand winds from extreme events such as tornadoes and major hurricanes. The purpose of a safe room or a wind shelter is to provide a space where you and your family can seek refuge that provides a high level of protection. You can build a safe room in one of several places in your home.

Wuffy, what do you think about Fillmore Ill? I'm wondering if I should call my friends there...they're very weather savvy, but it never hurts to give a shout...

What's going on in Fillmore? I'm slacking off on weather duties today. Since I don't own a TV I have to glean all info from the 'net, and I've just mostly been reading sports stuff since I got up late (around 11) after staying up too late. When in doubt, give 'em a call - people appreciate being cared about.

Can't seem to get a good handle on if there's weather there or not. I'll call in a few...doesn't look bad, but then again, neither did Woodward.

Go slack off. The biggest threat was yesterday/last night, so I guess we can both say we're off duty (lol, unless someone needs me...).

BDE and NMK are both in the general vicinity; it could pop off later, but I don't think it's going to be quite as bad as yesterday; shoot, not even near. That's small consolation to those in the path of whatever does build up, but still...I think the risk is very small.
