On Thursday, officials from Fort Leonard Wood posted on Facebook saying that Roque’s death had been ruled a homicide. Later in the day, the U.S. Army announced that a “person of interest” had been taken into custody in connection to the Sergeant’s death.

“The incident continues to be under investigation by the Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division,” FLW officials said. “Updates will be provided as they are available.”

LIGONIER, Ind. (WPTA) - Ligonier’s mayor has issued a proclamation for Sergeant Sarah Roque, a missing soldier from northeast Indiana who was found in Missouri this week.

In the proclamation, he extended his and the city’s gratitude for her service to the country in the United States Army and asked that flags be lowered to half-staff until her burial.

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — An army specialist has been charged in connection to the murder of a solder from Indiana at Ford Leonard Wood in southern Missouri.

Officials with Fort Leonard Wood said 21-year-old Wooster Rancy, with the 5th Engineer Battalion, is facing preliminary charges of murder and obstructing justice concerning the disappearance and death of Sergeant Sarah Roque, 23, of Ligonier, Indiana.

The Army Office of Special Trial Counsel preferred charges against Rancy on Oct. 30, including murder and obstructing justice under Articles 118 and 131b of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

I am constantly dismayed about the level of violence against women serving in the armed forces that we see in these military facilities.

I know there was supposed to be some campaign against violence, but it is clearly ongoing and resulting in horrible stalking and deadly abuse of women.

This is heartbreaking to read about.... RIP Sarah :(

Not sure if this press conference link has been posted:

The Commanding General Christopher Beck at Fort Leonard Wood responded (paraphrasing) when answering questions:

Sergeant Sarah Roque and Army Spc. Wooster Rancy who has been charged with her murder & obstruction of justice were enlisted in the same 5th Engineer Battalion, which has approx. 400-500 people, but whether they knew each other or there was a relationship between them, he couldn't speak to while the case is under investigation.

The K9 Zora who Sarah worked with/was the handler of was met by Sarah's parents who had requested to meet her, and he couldn't speak to specifically what would happen with Zora but that she is a valuable asset who will eventually be reassigned within the Army K9 program.

Rancy's pre-trial confinement location (on-post or off-post in a local jail) where he was being held right now couldn't be divulged, but eventually he would be moved to Fort Leavenworth to face charges.

Regarding the term "preferred charges" used by the Army in this case it allows them to hold Rancy in pre-trial confinement, he said it's a mechanism which allowed them to expedite the charges because they 'had the ability & information from the criminal investigation division and federal agencies' to charge him, and eventually he will be arraigned under Article 32 at Fort Leavenworth before trial, which is similar to a grand jury.

One of the media reps asked about safety on the base and stated there hadn't been any other murders on-post since 2019... will have to look into that and see what happened in that case.

All jmo paraphrasing some of the info I heard listening to this presser.

It's so sad & I'm so sorry for her loved ones & community for her passing.
