Shannan Gilbert Found, death declared an accident. What do you think?

Police still believe Shannan's death was probably an accident & unrelated. They think Shannan either had a nervous breakdown or a reaction from drugs, coupled with her "brain disorder" (being bi-polar) which contributed to her demise. They're still waiting for the ME to confirm.

Hackett was never mentioned in the show.

forgot to add

John Mallia was the first person searching the marsh last December, and is the person who found Shannan's purse in the muck. He did not have his dog with him at the time.

Ok, I didn't see any new information and, as Mrs. PC points out, there was some information not covered. :waitasec:

JMO, but it seemed like an opportunity for the police to explain their theories and offer excuses for why they haven't solved these crimes. A little CYA.

I'm sure that truth will be relieved to hear that. He's been a staunch defender of the good doctor from the beginning.

The media is non-publicly doing their research on doogie, waiting for the catalyst that makes their content "commercially viable", they are averse to defamation...

I sense something is brewing out there over the ocean, it's too still and there's no wind. Someone call FEMA, cuz they're gonna storm the beach like Katrina...

"doogie"...lol! I love it.

and yep, I hope they do storm the beach soon....I'm tired of waiting for some news.

Me too. In fact, I'm hereby offering a $20 reward for whoever solves this case. That may not sound like a lot, but we're still in an economic slump.

Sunday With Gus

Jim Jones, hope you can respond to this-

  1. did anyone ever interview Charles Serota?
  2. Did you get chills when you heard that SG was found in the area where Gus said the investigators already searched (including John with his dog Blue)?
  3. Did anyone ever ask MP why he said "One of the GIRLS"? (not GIRL but GIRLS)

Hey Seaslug. I never interviewed CS. I tried to get in touch with him through a friend of a friend in OB but never had any luck with that or any direct contact. Ive been away from the computer for the holiday and Im trying to get caught up and ill probably be away for the next few days so if I dont answer back right away that's why. Most of my interviews were just kinda spontaneous and happenstance. Im not an investigator or a reporter or a professional anything really and so i never felt real comfortable in that role. And it's just such a complicated case I kinda felt it was better to be handled by the authorities after a certain point.

Just watched the special on DVR. As I always say, it's good that they're keeping this in the public eye, even if it was more or less a rehashing of what most of us already know.

Funny how Malia found Shannen's body without Blue. I wonder if he has been scrutinized by LE. Ironic that what was probably just good thorough police work might make him seem slightly suspicious.

Ok, so here are my own notes (as erratic as they may be). I do agree that the information was mostly just a regurgitated version of the information already out there, and with even less focus on the Who Done It? Side of the equation. I did fall asleep at one point, but caught most of what I missed in the 2nd showing. *shrugs* Again, maybe it will contain that missing piece needed for someone to say, "A-ha".

Investigation Discovery Channel (ID Channel)..Show 'Disappeared', Episode "Footprints in the Sand" (2012) shown 04/09/12 @8PM CST...Here are my notes, as I heard them (any errors are my own, and I apologize in advance if there are any, as I tried to include as much as possible...Thank you in advance for your patience):

****** NOTES: ******

May 1st missing, so Boyfriend of Shannan - Alex Diez (sp?) calls her Sister looking for Shannan.

Small List of individuals Mentioned on Show:

1) Michael Pak - driver/protection
2) Joseph Brewer - unemployed and recently divorced lives on Oak Beach in Gated Community
3) Shannan Gilbert - Victim, prostitute, drug user
4) Sherre Gilbert - Victim/Shannan's Sister
5) Saara Gilbert - Victim/Shannan's Sister
6) Mari gilbert - Mother of Victim/Shannan
7) Furgus Colletti - Gus Colletti - Neighbor to Joseph Brewwe in Oak Beach Gated Community
8) LE Chief Domonic Varrone, Suffolk County
9) John Mallia w/search dog Blue - 1st to find a body

-------------------- EVENTS -----------------------

Pak drives Shannan to Oak Beach on Long Island
* 2am - Joseph Brewer Party - unemployed and recently divorced

Pak - stated he played 3hrs of video poker on cell, then gets a from call from Brewer inside to come in and get Shannan as she is freaking out

Sister Shannan - scared and upset, hiding behind couch, calls 911, states near jones beach (not her location)

Pak, tries to calm her as she runs to door, and she falls, gets up and runs out door

Pak follows her, loses sight of her, this suppose to be time last seen by Pak

Pak call tells "Sherre (Saara - sister, Mari-mom), about what happened, but that he left after an hour, last time he saw her was when she ran down the road

5:10am Furgus Colletti (?)
Retired, shaving going to car show..called 911, as soon as he told Shannan she ran...he goes to gate house to meet police, but see car driving slow and then putting on head beams, stops and talks to Pak, tells Pak he has called police, Pak states that she could get in a lot of trouble, he tells Pak so could you if yoou leave, and 35min later after call the cops arrive.

Chief Domonic Varrone, Suffolk County, stated that the LE did not know the prostitute angle on their initial visit, that LE assumed it was a domestic dispute and over when they got there. Did not at this time know of Shannan's 911 call.

May 8th - Family canvas the oak Beach neighborhood, Gilbert sister's post fliers, and go to Brewer's house, he has little to say except that he is sorry for what happened, but he doesn't know where she is, as leaving one Sister looks down and sees Shannan's gold color hoop earring on ground, at bottom of steps.

Monday 14th - 2wks since missing, Gilbert family obtained call logs
Police still don't know about 911 call

(At some point they learn of the 911 call as a result of the Gilbert Family's efforts)
Police listen to 911 Call, Finally Formal Investigation began, questioned Brewer - searched his home and car.
Pak - was given polygraph and passed
Formal search for clues:
Canine, arial search, no sign found, no new evidence investigation grids to halt

6mths later -

John Mallia w/dog Blue catches sent and goes into Brambles @ approx 3pm, a few feet in, blue stops short, body found, skeletal remains, shoved under bush, per Chief V it appears as if the body was just tossed, like from a vehicle 1st BODY FOUND

Sister Sherre - Mom Mari called Sheere w/detectives and said a body founs, and the detective states almost 100 percent sure the remains belong to Shannan

Police aware of metal plate in Shannan's jaw..body found within hours, sent to Suffolk County ME - no titanium plate

Mom Mari- sad, but happy not her, holding onto hope she was safe

2 days later. 12/13- more extensive search done at scene for any other evidence...bodies found - then another - then another - said 3 bodies.

Chief Vorrone "That's when this case took on a whole new meaning" (Smarmy comment directed only at Vorrone: umm, changed from just a missing person you didn't give a fig about or thought you would find?)

Now Multiple Murder Investigation 3 new bodies found (not including original body found), per ME none were Shannan

Sister Sherre- couldn't imagine other bodies found where her sister disappeared

When the multiple bodies are found, Media Frenzy ensues within hours!

Sister Sherre - felt media was helpful because they put pressure on the cops to look for Shannan

Total 4 bodies now, approx same age, all in burlap same way, all cause of death 4 were strangled, fact they were all in the sex trade - suggested same killer and had found a SK kill ground.

Nmarch 29, 2011 -- LE return to the underbrush to continue search, as Shannan still missing, use canines, helicopters, fire dept, etc. Search Ocean Parkway. Find 1 body
2days later - found 2 more bodies
By end of 2nd week body count was 10, that included: One Bag of bones, One Child in blanket, One exposed skeleton

LE speculated due to number and difference in how the bodies were found, that there are 2 or more SK's, but still no Shannan

Sister Shenne - sick to stomach that her sister was still not found in all the bodies

12/13 - LE remains found, 1 year later they find, less than 100 yards from where Shannan went misssing. Shannan's cause of death was ruled "accidental" (LE states that Shannan moved NE thru bramble, that she. collapsed and she succumbed to the elements)

Gilbert Family made statement that they do not believe that theory, as they do not believe Shannan would just take off her jeans, they implied that the LE had stated Shannan's condition included that Shannan's jeans were removed or down when her body was found.

LE - believe Shannan was in a feenzied state, and brain disorder may have played a part in her death (just because she was bi-polar --which to me makes no sense). LE believe that Shannan's missing person case may have been unrelated to the other murders.

Gilbert Family - says it doesn't add up, doesn't make sense, that the LE were unable to find her as she was on the phone for 1/2 with 911...

LE states that LISK - still on lose, receive tips and leads, but have never been able to Id the toddler or toddler's mother.

Gilbert Family - Terrible thing, but going to believe that this was Shannan's purpose and her destiny to find all these people and bring them home.

Sister Sheene - people don't realize that as far as prostitution or drugs, it happens to a lot of people even though they were loved.

****** QUESTIONS ********

*** Q: how did he have the family's phone # to call her sister and the code to get out of gates
*** Q: So who exactly did they speak with just Gus? And why did they right off his statement so easily? (Other than that they were Morons and uninterested)
*** Q: I wonder if ethnicity is known or any typing has been done

Thanks Clem,

That, plus what MrsPC wrote above, John Mallia was the first person searching the marsh last December, and is the person who found Shannan's purse in the muck. He did not have his dog with him at the time.

I thought he also discovered the first of the 4 bodies.

What is with John Mallia? Do any locals have any thoughts about him? Ta

I'll have to search again but a few months ago I posted a link to a story about him and his dog Blue. At the time that the 4 bodies were found Blue was the only cadaver dog that the SCPD had. I think they may have 2 or 3 new ones now. So it makes sense that he was the one to find so much.

I never questioned the circumstances surrounding Mallia and his dog Blue finding the first set of remains at Gilgo beach. Mallia took Blue out to search at Gilgo Beach on his own accord and this particular search was on his own time. According to past news reports he was the one who discovered 5 of the remains 1 without Blue. (Blue was still in the car.) Now, he miraculously finds Shannon's clothing and purse without Blue. Where was he the night Shannon went missing?

"doogie"...lol! I love it.

I should never have said "doogie" I don't want to slander NPH's character :)
He spent the summer over at water island a few years ago (next to blue point beach) but that was way after 1995 so we can't consider him a suspect :P

Cops: Remains likely those of
Shannan Gilbert

"Homicide detectives riding an amphibious machine located the remains on the surface of a dense wetland thicket less than a mile from the Oak Beach community where Gilbert, 24, who had worked as a prostitute, was last seen alive May 1, 2010, during a visit to a client."

My puzzler is puzzled. Why were Mallio and Blue searching Gilgo Beach in December 2010? Shannan went missing 3 miles away in Oak Beach. This action definitely led LE away from finding Shannan. The most logical place to search would be the immediate Oak Beach area, in the marsh and at least begin a perimeter search of Oak Beach, not Gilgo. Did Officer Mallio talk with CPH after Shannan's disappearance?

The New York Times
Discover Raises Suspicion of Serial Killer
By Al Barker and Nate Schweber
Published December 14, 2010
https://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/15/nyregion/15bodies.html?_r=1

"The discovery of the first body came about 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, when a canine section officer, John Mallia, discovered what the police described as skeletal remains. The area, populated by surfers in summer, when the bushes are lush with vegetation, is more barren now with leaves blown off in winter."

"Officer Mallia was led to the spot, north of Ocean Parkway, between Cedar Beach and Gilgo Beach, by his dog, Blue, the police said. That area had been chosen for the training exercise because of the disappearance in May of Shannan Gilbert, 24, a prostitute from Jersey City, the police said."

“With the brush down, I knew I’d have a better chance in the fall,” said Officer Mallia, who had searched there without results during the summer."

I think it's highly likely that Malia's discovery of the bodies and Shannen's belongings are due to just good police work. After all, he was the one working with a dog (albeit on his own time, if I understand correctly), so it stands to reason the would have found the bodies. Also, that he found Shannen's belongings may not be too notable. We have to take into account how many people were in that marsh searching (something I don't know the answer to).

But, of course, there were some who thought that the killer may be a police officer and we have to look at all angles.

Yikes! Meant to say "belongings" not body.
