Sharks, warblers, deer on endangered species list

I think we have more to fear from global warming than we do from deer overpopulation at the present time.

You can join Sierra Club for a special price of $15.00 until December 15th.

They work toward legislative efforts to educate and protect endangered species, the Sequoias, Redwood forests, and action to reverse global warming. http://www.sierraclub.org

I probably will ramble here. Growing up, I lived in an area where hunting was BIG! I think most males there hunted from the time they were children. I was raised by a Dad whose big sport was fishing, and I was always so grateful he never hunted. I saw enough dead deer hanging off the back of trucks and heads mounted on walls to last me three lifetimes. I swore I would get out of there, and never marry a man who had ever hunted, and I was successful on both counts. ha Deer were so rampant there, at least then. We would see them all over and my worst experience with one personally was when my friend was driving us back from church, and we hit one. I went home crying after it dragged itself into the woods and begged my Dad to let me take him back to the place to find it and shoot it. Ironic, huh? I thought about that deer suffering for a long time, and it was awful. Anyway, I see deer when we camp now all the time and love the thought that at least noone is allowed to kill those particular deer, because they are protected. Those are just my personal feelings. I eat meat, so I guess I could be a little hypocritical... end of rant.
No you're not a hypocrite, you have just been conditioned by society to seperate the meat from the actual living animal. I know so many animal lovers who still eat meat. There is just a connection lacking. But if you the next time you have a big tasty burger, you look at it and really think about the life that was taken to have it, you probably couldn't enjoy as much as you used to. That's what happened with me.

BTW, LOVE Tom Petty...best concert I ever saw was him in Pittsburgh in 1995. He rocked as usual! :)

Thank you Mathatex! I will look into that right away! :)

You're welcome. I love Sierra Club. They don't constantly bug you for money; if you get on their e-mail connection they let you know about each issue coming up. All sorts of travel and other activities available also.

I'm giving each of my kids a gift membership for Xmas. (Aren't they gonna' love me?)

I think that is a wonderful idea! What better gift can you give than one that helps restore and preserve our world for the future of our children, grandchildren and the ages to come!

That's a great gift!!

I rarely eat any meat any more. I don't eat fish of any kind either. I love pasta and mexican types of cheese enchiladas and there's all sorts of good things I can find that don't have meat. And I love pizza... my favorite is tomatoes and pineapple!! I'm not a complete vegetarian yet but I am getting there.

Well, don't count me in as a vegetarian, but I try to eat small amounts of meat only, as was stated above meat is not all that good for you - eating too much red meat can contribute to colon cancer.

I eat mainly chicken, lots of salmon and fish (which now are becoming extinct), and occasionally A DELICIOUS TENDERLOIN.

Tilapia is a fish that I think is not becoming extinct, and is delicious prepared lots of different ways.

I really have no problem with a hunter killing a deer during deer season as they are overpopulated; the venison meat is delicious and venison sausage is great.

But I don't understand this macho deal of putting heads of animals on walls either.

Once I went into this downstairs "museum" where this guy had hung all of the animals' head he had killed on safari and different places around the world. You know he was a very nice guy, but hunting was just his "thing", but that room made me sick.

A St. Louis police officer fatally shot a deer on Sunday evening after it had apparently wandered from the Mississippi River to the construction area of the new Busch Stadium, authorities said.

The deer had a broken leg and conservation authorities recommended to the police that the deer be shot, police said.

Sorry, but this just makes me ill :(

Good thing when we have broken legs, we don't get shot.

I think it depends where you live/where you're driving. I drove up to through MN and Northern WI to get to the UP of Michigan and there is a stretch that they call deer drive. It was at night so it was REALLY scary. I was driving about 30 mph on a 55mph highway just because I saw more glowing deer eyes that I've ever seen in my lifetime. I looked into this more later and the highway patrol there says that there are so many deer per mile there that they repsond to more deer/car deaths than any other injury/accident deaths combinded!

I agree though....ultimately we are overpopulating the land that was theirs.

Deer wouldn't be causing accidents anywhere if they had someplace to go since we keep taking their land away :(
And I don't really think it's an overpopulation thing, but perhaps I am naive. I just see here in my town that we keep tearing down trees and green space to build houses, strip malls, buildings and lots and leave no place for them to roam except the streets and highways. :(

I'm just too sensitive. :slap:

PFM, I don't know where you live but where I live, the deer are downright hazardous, in addition to ruining gardens and yards. Hunters have helped keep the population down for years but not enough! They are hungry too, because there are so many of them, so they roam all over trying to find food. Also when they are mating they are very restless. I see them every day, dead and alive, and sorry, but I prefer them dead. I am about to quit teaching night school because I must travel country roads and they dart out in front of cars all the time. I have narrowly missed them many, many times, and it is terrifying. They cause accidents, wrecked cars and even fatalities. I'm sure development has an effect on them but I still rank people more important than animals. I just talked about this on another thread in the Jury Room.

I am sorry you would rather see them dead than alive, but we are each entitled to our opinions. I definitely would rather see them alive.

It's not that I'd rather see them dead, per se. I live on a lake and love watching nature's creatures, and I don't want to see them hurt for no reason. I enjoy a lovely doe drinking from a pond with her fawn as much as the next person. I remember showing my children a doe and her twin fawns once while on a walk. It was great!

It's just that when I see deer, they're usually either about to run out in front of my car or they're lying on the side of the road. Of the two scenarios, I would rather see them lying on the side of the road, sorry (though I cringe when I think of the people who hit them - whether they were hurt or just had their car totaled). You have to understand how many people are involved in accidents in my region because of deer. Have you ever almost hit one? Do you know people who have been injured hitting them? I do!

Hunters are the main reason the deer population stays healthy, despite what the anti-hunting crowd says. Hunters and fishermen are the backbone of responsible conservation in the U.S. The license fees and the paring down of the numbers (so that the deer don't starve due to over-population) are the reasons.

But hunting alone will not do it. Especially if they can only kill buck - other bucks can impregnate many does.

There is a way to use contraceptive or sterilization of the deer, but I think it is pretty expensive.

I posted this in the jury room or parking lot or wherever that thread is about the peta thing ... I can never remember, lol.

You can buy deer whistlers for your car.

  • Independent laboratory test proves "Deer Warning" works.
  • Removable from base for easy cleaning.
  • Works like a whistle at vehicle speeds of 30 MPH or faster.
  • Works on city streets and highways for deer and dogs.
  • Helps prevent vehicle damage and saves lives.
Just $5.49, you cna buy it online:

http://www.usahardware.com/inet/shop/item/50500/icn/20-006668/allison/96_2470.htm

Or just go to Walmart, probably, or any hunting store I would guess.

Just go to a search engine or ebay or any online shopping store and search for "deer whistle for cars"

My boyfriend said they work. His family hunts ... we agree to disagree on this issue. ;) He doesn't hunt but some of his cousins do.

I don't know. I see deer, I am lucky though, I have never hit one yet.
They have startled me before. They are sooooo pretty to watch.

I didn't know this was widely available and reasonably priced. I will definitely be getting one. Thanks for the info, I really don't want to kill deer, PFM!

:blowkiss: Thanks PFM, I know you weren't trying to hurt my feelings, nor I yours. I think I've gotten a little hard-hearted about certain wildlife - having a friend hurt by a deer going through her windshield, my precious pooch almost killed by a racoon, and I am just getting white-knuckled lately about these running deer while I'm driving! I just asked my hunter-workmate about that whistle and he says they confuse the deer and make them even more skittish. Oh dear, I wonder!

My dad was a large animal vet and people always said to him, "You must love animals." I was always stunned when he'd reply, "Not particularly. I couldn't do my job very well if I did." He did love dogs though. Our house had a room filled with all his big game and fish (mounted). We had a wild boar, an antelope, a caribou, a moose, an elk, a big buck, a sailfish, a baracuda, and a bear skin rug (with the head). OMG, my mom hated it! We used to tie ribbons and bells on their antlers and such at Christmas. My kids used to take the rubber tongue out of the bear's mouth when they were little and chase each other around with it.
