This house, located at 4714 Baltimore Ave, Hyattsville, Maryland is where Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr. was living with his mother in March 1975. It is the address that he gave to Montgomery County Police on 1 April 1975 when he voluntarily appeared and claimed to have information about the abduction of the Lyon sisters - in hopes of claiming a reward announced in that morning's newspapers.

The Montgomery County Police took Welch's statement and information in April 1975 but dismissed him as an unreliable person or as providing useless information. Welch was claiming that he saw someone who looked like the Tape Recorder Man (TRM) sketch which had just been published in the same newspapers. There were many other witnesses coming forward at that same time claiming to have seen TRM at various places.

However, it was that report, reviewed many years later by cold case detectives, which brought Welch to their attention. They located him in a Delaware prison where he was serving time for unrelated crimes. He was initially considered a potential witness, and later as a person of interest/suspect in the case.

Over the course of time and several interview sessions, Welch told many varying stories about the Lyon sisters and persons he claimed were involved. During that time, investigators attempted to verify and cross check Welch's ever-changing stories. They located his mother, who was still living, and she related that Welch and his girlfriend were with her in her house on Baltimore Ave, Hyattsville when they learned of TRM and of the reward, and how Welch had remarked that he was going to try to claim the reward.

The two residential houses seen in the photo are (and were in 1975) in the midst of a commercial/industrial area.

If Welch's story of imprisoning one or both of the girls in a basement is true, this would probably have been the place. It was searched in 2014 by investigators looking for evidence, and they focused on a basement area accessible by an outside door.

Perhaps the yard should be carefully searched with in-ground sonar as well.

Timeline of Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr.'s known whereabouts:
He is a great reason for waterboarding convicted prisoners. They play with the police and make it a game where they have all the power. Well a towel, reclining table and 20 gallons of water would separate the psychos very quickly and probably locate the bodies. If we could have done that with Rodney Alcala we would have probably solved and located hundreds of cases.

Investigators would probably get more information out of Welch with the promise of a McDonalds
Cheeseburger and Coke. The problem is that he is a serial liar who simply couldn't tell the truth if he stepped in it. Anything he says would have to be cross checked and validated - a time consuming task.

Still, this case remains unsolved in my opinion (and probably in the minds of others) since the girls' bodies have never been recovered, and the other perpetrators have not been officially identified. Efforts to get more information from Welch (and other persons of interest) should continue.

Some of these older cases just stick to you....
And I do agree with @Richard to an extent, in that it is still an open case since the girls' remains have never been found... Though I do think that the bits they found on Taylor Mountains are likely of the girls.
I just feel Welch's father and uncle are more likely the more agressive perps.

Btw... what ever happened to the "middle aged man who was recording children's voices that day??
Somehow I missed tracking on this .

Thought it would be good to add the wikipedia entry---since it summarizes so much about the long history of this case....
