Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr. was convicted of murdering Sheila and Katherine Lyon, based on his guilty plea deal for a Life sentence. He claimed - or was believed to have burned their bodies in the vicinity of an old cemetery on Tayor Mountain.

The problem is that Welch is a liar who misled investigators often. It might be that he buried some of his victims there, and made a fire as a diversion away from an actual site.

‘In a statement Tuesday from the U.S. Marshals Office in the Western District of Virginia, officials said that based on “new evidence” from a cold case, which they did not specify, the U.S. Marshals Service, along with other agencies including the FBI, is searching the land. I am hopeful that the new evidence leads to Sheila and Katherine’s remains being found andreturned to their family. It is impossible to imagine the living nightmare they have been going through since Sheila and Katherine disappeared over 48 years ago. I’ve been wondering if there would be any further developments because it has been quite a while since there was any news.

Thank you so much for posting this update. So now that LLW’s prison sentence is ending in DE, he is being transferred to VA to serve his 48 year sentence for the murders of Sheila and Katherine as well as sex crimes against two girls in VA. I believe he will be eligible for parole in his 80’s but hopefully he will never be released.

“We are all better off that Lloyd Lee Welch is behind bars. His involvement in the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of the Lyon sisters is despicable and everyone who is aware of the crimes that he and others committed on these two innocent children agrees. Unfortunately, he was not brought to justice until after he had committed sexual offenses on a Prince William County resident. I am grateful for all of those that continued to work on these criminal investigations, never giving up on the Lyon sisters, and ultimately brought the cases to a successful conclusion.”

Hello everyone. I understand that the conventional wisdom is that Lloyd was their killer, and there is evidence for that, of course. BUT, a while back I had this thought that they might have been victims of Ted Bundy. It might be impossible, but I don't know. It might seem crazy, maybe. To be honest, I'm afraid to post this.

The FBI places Ted Bundy in Grand Junction Colorado through April of 1975 his victim was Denise Oliverson. Also in June of 1975, Ted Bundy killed a 15-year-old who was attending a youth conference at BYU.

The Lyon Sisters (along with the Reker Sisters) were stalked, abducted, then killed by MORE THAN ONE sociopath.

These dear innocent girls. Glad Welch is getting his due but I’m so sorry all this has to come up for their family at Christmas time. May God’s Peace be with them.

Welch probably was involved in the abduction of the Lyon Sisters, and he did plead guilty to their murders. However, it is very likely that others were also involved.

He is a total maggot and a serial liar as well as a serial killer. Just how many other victims there were will probably never be known for certain.

One possible victim was Eileen Kelly, who was abducted in either DC or Prince George's County, Maryland in December 1974, held captive for several days, murdered, and her body dumped in Washington DC just over the line and west of Hyattsville, MD. This occurred 50 years ago, and only 3 months before the Lyon Sisters went missing.

For that reason (your phrase "However, it is very likely that others were also involved") I didn't rule out Ted Bundy and others, because the bags "smelling of death" could have contained other victims that Welch could have killed. As for Eileen Kelly, I don't know who could have killed her.

I think there is little chance Ted Bundy was involved in the killing of the Lyon sisters. He does not appear to have ever been in that part of the country in his adult life.
Washington, Oregon, Utah and Colorado seemed to be his main killing grounds until his last flurry in Florida.
Welch killed the Lyon sisters, it seems pretty clear.

Ted Bundy killed the Lyon Sisters? This is the stuff that gets online sleuthing a bad name tbh...

As for Welch, I find his confession and conviction far from convincing. You have to give credit to the detectives that revived this case and at least tried to rectify what had been missed the decades prior. But in the end LLW told about 20 different stories and then LE picked the one that they liked best. It is very likely that LLW was involved and probably he is the only perp still alive, so good that they nailed him. But to me the true fate of the sisters has never been fully explained.

The father, John Lyon, recently passed away, and his wife Mary Jo passed away in June 2024. They are finally reunited with their girls.
